Former Scoutmaster, Eagle father twice

Review Date: 2007-12-31
A second class scout, I left Scouting at 16, became a father at 21, joined as an adult leader when my eldest of two sons turned 11. Two months later, the Scoutmaster announced at a Court of Honor that his job had gone away and I was taking over as Scoutmaster, and I was too surprised to say no. Steve came home from his first meeting and announced that he was going to be an Eagle Scout as soon as he could, and two years and 4 months later, his mother pinned his Eagle on his shirt, and I, as his Scoutmaster, MC'd his Eagle Court of Honor. His younger brother took a longer route, with more encouragement, and after I despaired of his ever getting there, he decided he also wanted the honor, and had his board of review the eve before his 18th birthday. I bought 3 copies of the book, after reading it, to give one each to my two Eagles, and one to the troop, which I still serve as a troop leader and counselor for several merit badges, in the hope that it will encourage several more boys to achieve. Years later, their Eagle awards opened doors for my sons, and in a way, I am still "paying thier dues".
As an adult leader, I have organised and led our sons and others to most of the high adventure bases, and many other high adventure trips, and as many of those quoted in the book, get more out of Scouting than I put in.

Legacy of Honor: The Values and Influence of America's Eagle Scouts This is a great book for all Eagle Scouts, both new and old. Makes a great gift for a new Eagle. Solidifies the importance of the rank of Eagle latter in life. I bought two and gave them to knew Eagles. It was a great hit. Not likely to be a duplicate gift and something to refer back to as the scout gets older.

This book made my son's Eagle ceremony. Dryse became and Eagle Scout with two of his friends /troop scouts. They each had several different ideas of what to do at their combined ceremony. With the help of this book the program they put together was perfect. The program was reverent, imformative, funny and touching. This book helped them to outline what they wanted in the program and a timeline to be able to complete the tack at hand. Each boy took on parts of the ceremony to orginize and their leadership skills they learned on their road toward Eagle shined through.

For thoses to strived past hardships and challenges, put aside the confusion and ease the anxiety when preparing for this important event. No matter what kind of Eagle you are, you'll find this book helpful in making the best ceremony possible for you that commerating the achievement few and many met. Say you are non-religious, thats ok, though reverent is one of the twelve points, there is a ceremony pertaining to your interest and devotions of causes. If God fearing is what defines you, look no further than to prayers and poems that are appendixed. Any Eagle with the eye for the creative can think up and use almost any ceremony easily and gain publicity effortlessly. Other items, For your Information, though, can be purchased from Mark Ray. Both this book and other items are a great helpful in making the best Eagle Court of Honor.

I was never a Scout, though my father was one. Well, now my son is a Boy Scout, and wanting to support him in that, I have become a committeeman, but what is Boy Scouting exactly? Well, the best place to start is right here in the Boy Scout Handbook. The book explains the ranks, skills and opportunities of Boy Scouting. It also tells you what is required and even a quick history of Scouting.

Are you interested in getting your son into Scouting? Well, this book is a good place for you to start on your quest to understand Scouting. It's written for the young ones, but informative for us parents as well. I highly recommend this book.

A great book for a Boy Scout, and a handy book for anyone.

If you're not a Boy Scout, it's a handy book to have around. Any time you need to know a good knot or hitch, advice on hiking, camping, or outdoor cooking, or the best first aid instruction, you can find it in this book.

A Must have for any Scout, or any Outdoor enthusiast

It is a xtremely complete book, it has an ease understanding language, and it covers a lot of aspects of the outdoor world; knots, packing, wild animals, wild plants, outdoors hazards, map interpretation, orientation, cooking, axe and knife use, first aids, wilderness survival, and and many other important topics.

It is a must have for scouts, specially starting ones, and will serve for any outdoor enthusiast as a good guide for the outdoors, even if you are an experienced one.

I was a scout in the mid-to-late 1980s, and I never forgot the sheer usefulness of the Boy Scout Handbook. From knots to map-and-compass use; from general camping and wilderness survival skills to other 'survival' knowledge (e.g., the BSH is where I learned to tie a necktie), this modest book is a compendium of useful knowledge written in easily understandable prose. An essential book for ANY person interested in outdoor activity!

I bought the Tenth edition. It has so much basic informtation on Campfires, Cooking, Ropes, Knots, Hiking, Backpacking, Cycling, Swimming, Safety Tips, Canoeing, Observing Nature, Physical Fitness, Ecology, Leadership Skills, and much, much more.

Maybe there are more complete books out there, but this one is VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE IT IS WRITTEN SO THAT ANY 11-YEAR OLD BOY CAN UNDERSTAND IT...

This book is a time capsule from the beginning of the Boy Scouts in the United States. Ecology? The Boy Scouts were there in 1911. Animal rights? Ditto. Of course, the specifics in this century-old text may not match current viewpoints, but the Boy Scouts were global before Globalism became chic! I showed the ads to really old boy scouts-those who were boy scouts during the 1950's-and they were reminded of the changes.

Don't use this book as a "how to" reference without first checking carefully. The advice on first aid includes procedures known to aggravate injuries-such as rubbing snow on frostbitten areas (page 272.) The section on constructing radio communications equipment (page 210) was written prior to the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission-in addition to needing licenses to build and operate the equipment, professional Morse Code operators are rare in the United States.

Some of this book is still current, too. Page 14 starts with the Scout Oath and the explanation of the Scout Law. The section on tracking is still good.

Get a copy! It's an inexpensive artifact from the end of America's frontier days.

Review Date: 2007-12-25
Theres a lot of books written out there from SAS UK soldiers to the new tech Boy Scout manual.

But, this is the one to get.

It will keep you alive with the bare minumum, no high tech things, no GPS, no down sleeping bag that weighs 2.5#, no batteries, no gas stove, no matches, NOTHING. They didn't have that back then.

You will rely on yourself, no modern gadgets. & become a man (or woman) in the process, & develop morals, & know USA history quite well.

History includes: did the USA purchase the SW USA from Mexico, or did it steal the land as some would say?

Did the USA pay for it legitimately? Do you know your history?

Do you know the true answer?

This was common knowledge of USA citizens in the early 20th century. Seems USA citizens forgot it all. Read the book...

Welcome to real survival techniques. Survival is more than "living off the land".

It is knowing the truth & how to answer & defend yourself from the slings & arrows of people who want to take things that belong to you.

Some of the information in this book may now be out of fashion and sometimes wrong, it is a great pleasure to read "Scouting for Boys". The ideals defended by B.P.: courage, generosity and compassion are as much a necessity today as they were a hundred years ago, when that book was first published.

The idea of an active, "hands on" education still find its echo in today's most recent education innovations.

Of course, the key message lies in the the initials of the author: Be Prepared!

"The British Empire wants your help"

Review Date: 2004-06-16
At the very beginning of the twentieth century, retired General Robert Baden-Powell, the hero of the siege of Mafeking, coalesced his ideas for an organization to train young British boys in scouting for the British Empire. Not a very organized thinker, Baden-Powell borrowed heavily from all sorts of unrelated resources - newspaper articles, military dispatches, fiction, and much more - and produced this, his first book on scouting. Originally published as six separate books, this book brings all of them together, complete with original illustrations.

Now, as might be expected from its roots, this book reflects a lot of the biases and ways of thinking from Edwardian England. But, leaving that aside, this is a fun and interesting book that shows clearly the forms that have stayed with the Boy Scouts movement to this very day. The introduction was written by Elleke Boehmer, a professor of Colonial and Postcolonial literature, and is a fairly predictable deconstruction/analysis of B-P and his movement.

Now, as a newcomer to Scouting (my son is a Tenderfoot) did I find anything useful in this book? I sure did. Robert Baden-Powell was very knowledgeable about the subject, and this book sure shows it. (I never thought of tying my shoes like that!) Of course some of the information is out of date, especially the first-aid information, so it isn't really usable by the boys "as is." But, this is a nice resource, one that shows you where Scouting started.

Oh, and I must say that I actually enjoyed the somewhat jumbled organization of this book. It isn't as scholarly and antiseptic as modern Boy Scout books, and the stories and tales laced throughout make the reading much more fun. Plus, I did find the focus on some subjects, such as logic and deductive reasoning, to be quite interesting. I loved this book, and highly recommend it to you!

I was an Eagle Scout as a boy, and now I'm the founding Scoutmaster of my sons' troop. As such, I was anxious to get a copy of this hard cover version. Baden-Powell's work is a classic and well worth the read. The problem with this edition is the Introduction by Elleke Boehmer. Without it, the book is a 5-star. Ms. Boehmer appears a non-believer. Reading her is like taking a pessimistic art critic along side while viewing an art gallery. Far more benefit (for all concerned) would occur without her input. For each positive she states about BP, she mentions a negative. She also spends just over two pages discussing homosexual tendencies (pp xxxii-xxxiii) within BP's works, something which is out of place in this work. I started to list several quotes, but I think one sums it up best of all from the back cover: "She has never been a scout, but she did once shake hands with Lady Baden-Powell at a jubilee celebration in South Africa." I guess that must make her an expert.

Excellent if you skip the intro

This original text of BP's "Scouting for Boys" is an excellent read. You can skip the introduction, however. The intro is a steaming pile of horse excrement written by someone seething with contempt for BP and the Boy Scout movement. Why it was included with the book is beyond me unless it's to provide bum fodder whilst camping. Remember, a scout is thrifty!

The author's vivid descriptions of the mountains and terrain, the weather and the trials and tribulations of hiking, camping, building log structures and the camaraderie of such an outstanding troop is nothing but masterful ! What the author has produced should be a legend for all those presently in scouting. I truly doubt that any other troop has ever been or will be as dedicated or productive as 511. Braman has really chronicled the true spirit of scouting in a way that will inspire future generations of scouts, even though I doubt that it will ever be equaled. Where "The Fuzzy Marmots Grow" is a work of art. This book was a pleasure to read, it captivates the reader and it's hard to put down. I certainly enjoyed it

This delightful memoir of boyhood is a chronicle of humor, nostalgia and charm. It's story-telling at its best. Unequivocally recommended to those who enjoy remembering, reliving, the spirit of youth - when the miracle of adventure was an everyday occurrence. Lovingly conceived, deftly written.

Delightful--a story to savour and share.

James Braman's book is a delightful, charmingly-told story about Boy Scout Troop 511 of Bremerton, Washington. The boys' rollicking adventures as they explore the wilds of the Northwest and venture forth in their ancient Fageol bus to view the wonders of Grand Coulee Dam are thoroughly entertaining. At the same time, the book subtly provides a recipe for building character and a foundation for success in life--simply bring together strong, caring leaders and eager, adventurous youth, and the effect can be powerful and lasting! Where the Fuzzy Marmots Grow is an enjoyable read for everyone--from preteens to grandparents.. Highly recommended!

This is a great book showing the scout perspective. The other half is the Handbook For Scout Masters 1914 recently reprinted. The two show both sides of the picture and are both funny from their angle.

I was a Cub Scout, Weblo, and Boy Scout for years. Some of my fondest memories are of times spent with my fellow scouts around the campfire, telling stories, jokes, and just being BOYS. This edition reminds me of the pre-PC and pre-secular Boy Scouts, when scouting was almost a calling for teenage boys, and certainly contributed to their moral and ethical upbringings. In this day of anti-God, anti-anything-as-long-as-it's-secular-humanism, it's refreshing to read a handbook with advice on serving one's God, and that it should be a regular part of one's life. Kudos to the publisher for re-introducing a classic.

Contrary to another review on this page, this book is still in print. This page was set up by a seller that was offereing an older version. The Fieldbook is a publication by the Boy Scouts of America and it is regularly updated, so if you buy used, always confirm the publication date from the buyer to make sure it's the one you want. My oldest copy is a 1967, but I bought a new one published 2004, a complete update from the 1984 edition. I believe there are 4 editions total. I like the nostalgic artwork in the old ones and I like to seee which methods have changed over the years. Great pictures on nearly every page, as well as instructional diagrams. Tons of helpful hints and advice, that is the result of nearly 100 years of Boy Scouting. One of the most interesting changes is the inclusion of co-ed pictures. There are tons of girls in the pictures joining in the activities. Do not confuse this with the Boy Scout handbook, the Fieldbook concentrates on the outdoors.

This is an extremely useful book for anyone interested in outdoor activities, especially camping. Beginning with organizing and planning for a trip, this book is a very complete tool for a camper. Tells you what to pack, how to select you equipment and gear such as boots, clothing, backpacks, pots and pans, cookstove, and more. It has handy pack lists so you do not forget to pack the essentials you will need.
It explains how to plan your menus and shop for nutritous camp food before you leave, And how to cook it when you get there. Next is the section on "Leave No Trace". It used to be that they recommended cutting down trees and saplngs to make all sorts of camp furniture. Nowadays the emphasis is on preserving nature so that others can enjoy it too. So the book teaches you how to use a campstove rather than scrounging wood to cook with. It explains outdoor hygiene. Next there are seperate instructions on compass, map, and GPS navigation. There is a great section on cold weather and hot weather camping, including clothing selection, emergencies such as shelter, and water collecting, as well as preserving your food in severe climates. Plenty of info is specific to backpacking. Next is sailing, canoe, kayak, and raft. The biking, horseback, ski and snowtouring, caving, fishing.

The book has regular alerts on key topics that guide you to other books, guides, or websites for expanded information including a website created in tandem with the book. They have also included a section on appreciating nature from astronomy, to bird watching, tracking, plant life, weather observation, and more. All in all a comprehensive and well written guide.
