Mr. Gottlieb is one of the finest photographers our country has to offer! His portrait of Washington is a love song to our nation's capitol. The photographs are spectacular, accompanied by a personal, touching and sometimes humorous text. If one thinks they know Washington, this book is a must see through this photographer's eyes. If one has never visited our nation's capitol, this will be a personal journey through a beautiful city.

Great book and a great asset to my business!

This book is the best on this subject! I've found it extremely valuable. It's very well written and very easy for non-legal professionals to understand. The sample forms are fully explained and are very easy to alter to my business' specific needs. I'm also better able to explain my contracts to my clients!

I think this is a must have for any professional photographer who doesn't have the option of having legal representation on retainer.

Excellent resource for photographers, new and old!

With access to download all of the forms in the book, and wonderful legal advice from an attorney-turned-photographer, this book is a must-have for all photographers! It covers everything from simple model releases to employee forms, to commercial contracts. There is something for everyone!

Through My Eyes

Gerard Thomas Straub has given us all a gift in the work of his book, When Did I See You Hungry? Through my eyes as a volunteer missionary nurse to many third world countries, I can attest to the visions one sees in this marvelous book. The pictures themselves tell the stories. As you look into the eyes of our brothers and sisters you see Christ. Straub has depicted this sincerely and with compassion.
I have given this book as gifts to many friends and family members. Some are saddened by the pictures, others are curious. A few are speechless.
It is not until you reach out your hands and touch the lives of those around you will you know what it is like to ask, "When Did I See You Hungry?"
After reading this book, if one does not find compassion deep within them, they are ones looking to be fed.

I felt I was entering the inner world of Opera singers.

Review Date: 1999-04-10
This is a new concept in an approach to Opera, photographs and text designed to allow the reader to enter into the thoughts and meditations of Opera singers as they are waiting backstage to go on. The pictures show the characters (and what a selection of roles and artists!), in physical and emotional readiness as they are backstage in Ms. Lieberman's ready made studio brought to the Opera during actual performances from around the world..the text by Paul Griffiths, (Music critic for the New Yorker and now The New York Times) brings you into their world in an imaginative and knowledgeable fashion, creating an inner dialogue of the performer and character. The book becomes a unique treasure in the combination of the photographer and writer. What a find! thedre@wenet.net

The book by Ms. Lieberman brings opera divas right into your living room, as if transformed from the stage directly into your home. The pictures are amazingly vivid, and her ability to capture the moment with people is unparalleled. I think this is one of the best opera photo books ever printed! Brava!

An indispensible volume for the art of photography library
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-24
For over a century the art photographs of Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856 - 1931) have been admired and collected, maligned and banned, and have generally been a landmark in the study of the male nude in art. This small (in size) volume of the artist's photographs represent all the photos taken in Taormina, Sicily, a near mythical spot where artsits have flocked for many years. von Gloeden originally moved to Taormina on physician's orders, leaving his homeland of Prussia and his successful career as an actor for the warmer, healthier climes of Sicily. While there he gradually converted his home into a backdrop where he could use his camera to captured Scilian youths in staged, classical poses - an homage to Greek and Roman myths and times.

This book is graced by a fine preface written by Ulrich Pohlmann, a terse essay which surveys the artist's life and makes a fine argument for the includion of von Gloeden's photograhs in the museums of the world. And then come the actual jewels - sepia toned moments of classicism using the working class Scilian youths for his Golden Mean models. Many of the photographs very comfortably present full frontal nudity of these young men and with the sexual revolution of the 1960's these photogrpahs abounded in books and calendars in support of the New Male Image. But for whatever reason history will alter their use, these beautiful creations are true milestones in figurative photography. It is a joy to have this collection available in its entirety.

Glorious celebration of early male nudes!

I too grew up in Wyo. and this book features one of the most interesting cross-sections of the rugged individuals that live there. I purchased it because my brother is featured in it (horseshoer, p. 130), but my friends and family are fascinated by it. It is a featured "coffee-table" book in our home.

WITH by Ken Ohara features a photographic series of one-hour exposure portraits unlike anything you've seen, challenging the concept of traditional portrait appearances and evaluative processes. Here identify is fuzzed and lost, context boundaries are blurred, and observers are pushed into forming new frames of reference and new points for creating impressions of identity. Any involved in portraiture from either side of the camera will find Ohara's approach unique.

Wonderful, Diverse Pictoral Essay about Woman
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-31
This book celebrating all women is stunning in its ability to capture the diversity of girls and women across the globe and throughout time. Using life stages as the central organizing theme, the book offers visually rich photographs to expand our knowledge and understanding of what it is to be female in different countries, settings and social classes, and what it is to be young, middle-aged and old. Each stage and nuanced way of living--whether rich, middle-class or poor--is recognized and captured thoroughly by the lenses of a multitude of photographers. It also includes essays, but the photos are what I enjoyed the most. If I had one criticism, it would be that there are not enough photos of women in their 70s-100s; this dearth is common in the media (TV, magazines, movies, advertisements), but I thought that this book would have rectified the all-too-common invisibility of older women. "Woman:" would make a great gift. I bought mine for a friend, but ended up keeping it and buying her one of her own.

Thought-provoking essays on the experience of being female

In Woman.: A Celebration To Benefit The Ms. Foundation For Woman, Carol Gilligan, Byllye Avery, Wilma Mankiller, and Letty Cottis Pogrebin provide illuminating and thought-provoking essays on the experience of being female in a spectrum of countries and cultures around the world. Profusely illustrated with 200 color and b/w photographs, Woman. is both a testament, a memorial, and a multicultural acknowledgment of women through a diversity of images reflecting the gender that "holds up half the sky". Woman. is an impressive and recommended addition to photography collections, women's studies lists, and would make an ideal gift for a friend, family member, school or community library.

Review Date: 2001-02-20
Women and Warriors of the Plains features the pioneer photography of Julia E. Tuell, whose black and white photos documented Native American women's lives and times. The Tuells lived among the Sioux from 1912 to 1929, with Julia using her photography to document their rapidly-changing way of life. Her photos are both artistic and historically important documents of early Sioux women's lives.

An outstanding contribution to Native American studies.

An excellent pick, Dan Aadland's Women And Warriors Of The Plains provides a review of the early photography of Julia Tuell, whose black and white portraits of Native American women are accompanied by fine accounts of life with the Northern Cheyenne and others.
