Insight into design analysisReview Date: 2001-02-10
If you are fascinated by the early Irish texts and illuminations, you need this book, to better appreciate the extraordinary capacity of their authors to structure their work on principles of design which I found (and find) astonishing.
If you are not, but enjoy thought-provoking reading on matters which need re-thinking (how Europe came to be, for instance), the rigor and originality of Stevick's work will satisfy... and refresh your questions.
Stevick himself would not claim so much; the (great) value of his work is for us to decide.

Completely understandable discussion of economic theories.Review Date: 1998-09-10
Kuttner develops his argument with the most thorough and understandable discussion of the difference in ideologies betwen supply and demand economic theories I've ever read.
Utilizing the foundational principles of supply and demand theories Kuttner goes on to analyze the historic development, practices and effects of differing economic policies in the U.S. Kuttner's analysis describes the descent of Keynesian policies and the ascent of supply-side policies, pinpointing 1978 as the year business interests "...mounted an extensive campaign to convine public opinion that low taxes on the wealthy are the key to broad prosperity." (53) As a result of the effectiveness of this campaign Kuttner contended Ronald Reagan's election and a return to supply-side economic policies were essentially foregone conclusions.
Providing an analysis of supply-side fallacies of capital, savings, debt, housing, taxes and welfare which promote efficiency over equality, Kuttner further contended conservative reliance upon low-wage competition strategies resulted in an aggregate loss of purchasing power in the U.S., further exacerbating the chasm between the rich and poor.
Comparing the economic standing of several countries in the late 1970s and 1980s, Kuttner provided convincing evidence that countries which had national economic policies managing trade, strong labor unions, and progressive tax policies were faring better than the U.S. in the changing economic order.

Runaway Servant AdvertisementsReview Date: 2000-06-02
Those interested in Irish history would find this interesting. While a number of ethnic groups are mentioned, an overwhelming majoirty of the servants advertised in 18th-century Philadelphia were Gaelic-speaking Irish just beginning to learn English. This should also be interesting for students of labor history. The skills and experience of the servants are listed, as are a number of injuries, most presumably work-related.

The theme of the book is subversion, and Epstein demonstrates that for many of the common Christian symbols (such as the lion, the unicorn, and the medieval hunt)there were subtly opposing occurences in Jewish art. Epstein also ventures into less commonly known symbols, such as the elephant and the hare. Each chapter is devoted to a different symbol, its Christian meanings, and then an in-depth explaination of its Jewish re-interpretation. The cases are painstakingly researched and Epstein's bibliography is in and of itself a valuable research source.
Although each chapter of this book could potentially be its own entire thesis, as a whole it makes a wonderful short introduction to the study of medieval Jewish iconography.
