Wonderful source for the study of basic Jewish iconography

I originally picked this book up at the College library, and I was so impressed with Epstein's work on this little volume that I immediately purchased it. As a student of Art History, I spend a lot of time combing through online as well as library archived journals for well-researched data on obscure symbolism. This book provided an excellent jumping-off point for branching out into alternate interpretation of medieval Jewish manuscripts.

The theme of the book is subversion, and Epstein demonstrates that for many of the common Christian symbols (such as the lion, the unicorn, and the medieval hunt)there were subtly opposing occurences in Jewish art. Epstein also ventures into less commonly known symbols, such as the elephant and the hare. Each chapter is devoted to a different symbol, its Christian meanings, and then an in-depth explaination of its Jewish re-interpretation. The cases are painstakingly researched and Epstein's bibliography is in and of itself a valuable research source.

Although each chapter of this book could potentially be its own entire thesis, as a whole it makes a wonderful short introduction to the study of medieval Jewish iconography.

This is a very nice book with great pictures and old print ads. It also provides considerable written information on the history and progress of the company and glass making.

I learned a great deal about Carnival glass and my ability to identify specific pieces was greatly enhanced because of this book. Highly recommended, especially for the beginner to Carnival glass.

Rose has written an important book that should be read by all people interested in work and justice. By carefully examining shop floor activism at the mill and life in the Duquesne community, Rose reveals the challenges of forming a union in a key industry beset by a working class divided by skill, ethnicity, and race. Based on the most impressive archival research I have ever encountered, this books stands as a signal achievement in the profession. It is an important story well told! Buy this book!

Insight into design analysis
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-10
This book is a must for art historians, designers of objects, students of the development of thought in Europe, and everyone who appreciates careful, extremely intelligent research, which opens up fresh vistas on the birth of Europe.

If you are fascinated by the early Irish texts and illuminations, you need this book, to better appreciate the extraordinary capacity of their authors to structure their work on principles of design which I found (and find) astonishing.

If you are not, but enjoy thought-provoking reading on matters which need re-thinking (how Europe came to be, for instance), the rigor and originality of Stevick's work will satisfy... and refresh your questions.

Stevick himself would not claim so much; the (great) value of his work is for us to decide.

Forty - four upper Bucks Co. Quaker families' genealogies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-03
If you are of Bucks County Quaker ancestry and your family's surname is listed among the 44 families in the book, you will find this book quite useful. My father's maternal line was listed here back to the 17th century in England starting with his name in 1925 at the age of 3, a very good start in tracing my genealogy. My introduction to it came from Ancestry.com which listed several of my recent ancestors as being in the book. Definitely of interest only to people from the 44 families whose genealogies are traced from 1925 back and then only to people who are interested in genealogy, as much of it is dry genealogical data ... birth, death and marriage dates, etc.

Great book about a phenominal prison
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-15
Eastern State Penitentiary (now a museum) is an imposing and magnificent building that draws thousands of curious onlookers and historians every year. From its decaying walls to the stories of the prisoners that once called it home, everything about the structure is impressive. Dolan has done a brilliant job documenting the history of the prison in one concise and detailed manuscript. His writing exposes his passion for Eastern State and every section seems to have been clearly researched and bolstered with fantastic new photographs. This is a must read and one of the best books in the Images of America collection.

Completely understandable discussion of economic theories.
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-10
Kuttner presented a well-developed argment for embracing Keynesian full employment policies which, according to Kuttner, would not require a trade-off between equality and efficiency.

Kuttner develops his argument with the most thorough and understandable discussion of the difference in ideologies betwen supply and demand economic theories I've ever read.

Utilizing the foundational principles of supply and demand theories Kuttner goes on to analyze the historic development, practices and effects of differing economic policies in the U.S. Kuttner's analysis describes the descent of Keynesian policies and the ascent of supply-side policies, pinpointing 1978 as the year business interests "...mounted an extensive campaign to convine public opinion that low taxes on the wealthy are the key to broad prosperity." (53) As a result of the effectiveness of this campaign Kuttner contended Ronald Reagan's election and a return to supply-side economic policies were essentially foregone conclusions.

Providing an analysis of supply-side fallacies of capital, savings, debt, housing, taxes and welfare which promote efficiency over equality, Kuttner further contended conservative reliance upon low-wage competition strategies resulted in an aggregate loss of purchasing power in the U.S., further exacerbating the chasm between the rich and poor.

Comparing the economic standing of several countries in the late 1970s and 1980s, Kuttner provided convincing evidence that countries which had national economic policies managing trade, strong labor unions, and progressive tax policies were faring better than the U.S. in the changing economic order.

I've read lots of sport books. This might be the best-paced book ever. It's broken up into vignettes and profiles and stories - even some funny jokes. What Villanova did was a great achievement and this book brings it to life with just the right amount of history, humor, and fun.

Runaway Servant Advertisements
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-02
This work is a compilation of newspaper advertisements for runaway servants. A brief introductory essay offers a good summation of general patterns. The masters offered thorough descriptions of the servants they wanted captured and returned. These detailed descriptions also give us a good look at these individuals.

Those interested in Irish history would find this interesting. While a number of ethnic groups are mentioned, an overwhelming majoirty of the servants advertised in 18th-century Philadelphia were Gaelic-speaking Irish just beginning to learn English. This should also be interesting for students of labor history. The skills and experience of the servants are listed, as are a number of injuries, most presumably work-related.
