Best Cookie Book I Own

Review Date: 2006-10-16
I own more cookbooks than I care to admit, and the majority of those are for baking. But when I'm in the mood for something sweet, this is inevitably the first book I grab.

Every recipe I have tried--and I have made many recipes from this book--has been both straightforward to make and incredibly delicious. And I have made "Bittersweet Brownies" so many times that I no longer need to actually look at the book.

The recipes are clearly written, and most of them use ingredients and pans that I already have, so it's perfect for those evenings when I have to have chocolaty goodness *right now* and am not interested in running out to get an ingredient.

I'd also recommend this book for those who are not regular bakers. The recipes are easy to follow, so this book is a good way to convince someone that baking isn't that difficult, as well as of the value of keeping parchment paper and good chocolate on hand.

The only negatives for this book are: First, my copy is quite literally falling apart, which is frustrating. Second, this book has gone out of print. But if you find a copy--grab it. You won't regret it.

If you love to bake cookies and brownies, this book is a must have.

Don`t let the size of the book bellie its weight in gold. Most recipes have variations so its actually more than the over 100 pages. I had so much successwith the first recipe that i could not wait to try all the rest and they were all superb (especially the mexican wedding cakes that melts in the mouth with a pecanish taste lingering in your mouth) The recipes are really simple due to precise instructions and for a number of them, you just need a saucepan...less work, less clean-up and a thumbs-up for a good cookie. If you're like me and want minimal fuss and maximum taste, read this book. This is the only book i use for chocolate chip cookies.

Admit it - even die hard bakers and cooks like me - can use a short cut now and then - this is the brownie mix bible! Buy it - you won't be disappointed. -- Addendum: Made the dark rum brownies today with the chocolate glaze - dear God - - I bake them and then left the house - I came back in and the house smelled incredible (and I bake all the time!) - - - they taste even better than they look and smell. You would swear you bought these at some posh bakery! I made a double batch to send to my husband's work - but couldn't send them all - wrapped up some for favorite friends and pals - only the best of friends deserve these!

These brownies are bliss!

I sometimes can't make up my mind which to make so I will make two recipes at a time and share them with my neighbors. This book is a MUST for brownie lovers.

Brownie Mix Bliss: More Than 175 Very Chocolate Recipes for Brownies, Bars, Cookies and Other Decadent Desserts Made with Boxed Brownie Mix

In COOKIE DOUGH DELIGHTS, Camilla V. Saulsbury worked magic with refrigerated cookie dough. With BROWNIE MIX BLISS she turns her attention to the familiar box of brownie mix and the many possibilities contained therein.

All 175-plus recipes in BROWNIE MIX BLISS begin with a standard box of brownie mix. What's more, all the recipes have been streamlined for easy, everyday baking. The problem, if you can call it that, will be deciding which treat to make first. How about Mocha Buttercream Brownies? Or Snickery Supreme Brownies? Or maybe Mint Julep Ganache Brownies? And that's but the tip of the chocolate iceberg.

While brownie mix can be used to create all manner of mouthwatering brownies, it can also be transformed into countless other very easy, very chocolate desserts ranging from sophisticated biscotti, soufflé cakes, madeleines, and cheesecakes to nostalgic drop cookies ice cream novelties, gooey layered bar cookies, and so much more.

In addition to the recipes, Saulsbury offers "Brownie Points," or tips for baking success. For the accomplished baker as well as the novice, BROWNIE MIX BLISS takes the chocolate dessert to a new level of, well, bliss!

Another delicious timesaver by Camilla Saulsbury!

Stock up on mix ins, and you're done. Rave reviews from the people at my husband's office. I will never let them know that my killer brownies are not 100% from scratch, let them think it!

This book is a must have for all you busy Mom's, busy women, and young bakers out there!

Jimmy Jonny Brownie doesn't like to go to bed. And with the approval of his parents, he stays up all night. What he discovers the next day as a consequence of not going to be the night before instills in him (and young readers everywhere) the parental wisdom of bedtime for even the most energetic of kids. Beautifully enhanced with the lively artwork of Sherwin Schwartzrock, Bing Puddlepot's Jimmy Jonny Brownie Stays Up All Night is a unique, entertaining, and highly recommended picturebook story that has a true moral to the tale.

Breathtakingly Original

Review Date: 2005-09-13

The Lingerie Room is a highly original and breathtaking novel by Brownie. Each of the chapters deal with a couple in a relationship which is either stagnant or in various stages of decline. Some find their soulmates, but they are not necessarily the people they came in with; some are headed for tragedy, but all people are tested on an exploratory level, to gauge their commitment to each other. At the same time they are either resisting or indulging in what's on offer at the Lingerie Room. They are put to the test with their intentions to each other in soul baring honesty. They explore their innermost feelings and lay their relationships up for scrutiny amongst the temptations of the lingerie room, a futuristic brothel, where anything goes. In times where the new law of union is anti-marriage, it is indeed a test of their faith in each other's love and dedication to each other.
With a mixture of fascinating characters, including a time warp assassin and a self-absorbed alien being, this well-written, fast moving erotic story makes for a great, riveting read. It would also translate well into a sleek sci-fi movie.

This book was given to me as a gift and I must say it is one I was very happy to receive. Although only a short story it is both imaginative and topical, and probably most important it is original. Brownie has a great insight into relationships in the 21st century and combines a heady mix of sex, hi-technology, alien control and raw emotions.

This book will open your eyes to new possibilities and fire the imagination. 4.5 out of 5

A Provocative Tale!

Review Date: 2005-07-26
The Lingerie Room is a highly provocative fantasy/science fiction tale that's both exotic and erotic. Alien beings and humans interact within a realm of nefarious manipulation. At the center of it all is "The Lingerie Room," where couples are "stripped," in more ways than one, of all pretenses - forced to speak only the truth about their feelings and intensions regarding one another. This spellbinding story enlivens the reader who becomes a behind-the-scenes voyeur during the unveiling of a series of fascinating relationships. I highly recommend this unusual book. - Review written by Laura Somers, author of "Didn't See It Coming."

Mirror of the soul

Review Date: 2005-07-12
The Lingerie Room, by Brownie, is a unique glimpse into that part of our minds we most often keep to ourselves. Set in the near future, this is a place that pulls out the truth of our inner demons, be they sexual or romantic. It's the ultimate marriage/relationship counselor, throwing the participants into a moment of harsh truth and raw sensuality. Set up as a series of short stories, The Lingerie Room deals with eight sets of couples, each showing a very different side of how emotions and relationships play out. Despite the constant theme, Brownie manages to keep each of these stories unique, bringing to the reader a sense of the erotic and dark within each of us. The characters are believable with a mixture of modern and futuristic elements blended into them that help keep the stories in focus. Brownie even gives us a brief glimpse into the word of those that run The Lingerie Room and even they are not immune to the strange happenings of this place.

For those looking for a quick release into the world of the erotic, or enjoy seeing the shadows that lie in each of our psyches, I recommend The Lingerie Room. I am sure that any who read it will find themselves touched by at least one of the stories, as if looking into a mirror of the soul.

Our family is one of the original Tupperware pioneers mentioned in this book. I was very impressed with the author's ability to really capture an honest and accurate account of Brownie's spectacular rise to power in Tupperware as well as her eventual demise in the business world of the 50's. This book gives credit where it is due to all the early players that were responsible for creating this truely unique American Company. There has always been more to the Brownie Wise and earl Tupper relationship then people today understand and this book does tell the full story well.

Finally an honest book about THP !

Having been in the Tupperware Family all my life, i found this book to be fascinating, truthful, and completely up front and interesting - My parents were one of the original distributors so i know what is true and what is not - But the author did great research and wrote it in such a delightful way - I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the true story behind Earl Tupper and Brownie Wise and the early pioneers who worked themselves silly(sometimes literally!) to make Tupperware become a household name!

I was amazed at the details Bob Kealing related in the book. He really brought Brownie Wise (as well as Tupper himself) to life. The story is not a "slam job" but an even-handed look at the rise and fall of a strong-willed single mother. Brownie Wise was an integral part of Tupperware's meteoric rise. Sadly, as a woman, she was all too easily cast aside. This book relates a sad chapter in the history of Tupperware that I had no idea of. The authors detailed accounts made it easy to connect with the main characters in a way some historical novels never do. I also loved the way he put you "at the scene" by relating details of significant events taking place at the same time as the story. I predict you will be pleasantly surprised at the level of details and straight-forward writing style of this book. Excellent story about one of America's first successful business women.

Bob Kealing transformed meticulous research about the "Queen of Tupperware" into a fascinating story. The interlinking saga of Tupperware and Brownie Wise moves from the early days of the little known plastic container company to the heights of 1950s corporate America. Kealing points to the important contributions Brownie Wise made in home party sales which ultimately made Earl Tupper a very rich man. The surprising downfall of Wise shocked her legions of fans and women who valued her as a role model. She was a promoter & mentor to all the women who for the first time were able to gain financial success. This book is also an important addition to Orlando area history. The small town of Kissimmee eventually grew because of its proximity to Walt Disney World. However, Kealing points out that there was a rich history before Disney World arrived. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in long buried histories.

I am in chocolate heaven everytime I open this book. The recipes are simply the best, chocolatiest, fudgiest, gooeiest I have ever tried. Even her recipe for cocoa brownies are moist and fudgy whereas usually cocoa brownies turn out dry and chewy.

I am working my way through this book and so far everything I made have been winners. This book has everything from classic fudge brownies to touches of unconventional flavors like balsamic vinegar, lemongrass and ginger. Having said that, I'm not an adventurous baker so I would probably give such recipes a miss. Still this is a book I use all the time and it hasn't disappointed me yet. And probably never will.

I love how Elinor tells you how the batter will look or when you know a cake is done. And how great to spend a free evening baking to pull out a fabulous dessert a few weeks later to amaze and delight your friends?! I highly recommend Bake and Freeze Desserts to those used to baking and to those who aren't!

First, I must point out the error in the Amazon product details. This book is not for ages 4 to 8. As pointed out in the School Library Journal review, the readability level is for grades 6 and above. I'm enjoying reading it aloud to my 8 year old daughter, who is fascinated by the fact that there was a Brownies children magazine in 1920. This is an outstanding collection and a "must" for every child's bookshelf.

This is an excellent book on an important subject. I sincerely wish it was still around. Self-esteem and a positive self-concept for children of color, especially African-American children are still areas that need a lot of work. Our world is still consumed with an abundant amount of negative images and stereotypes of people of color. This book is wonderful in counteracting that, covering all areas of life; art, athletics, academics, social. It confronts the emotional needs of our children. Every home, school and library should have a collection of the stories and letters found in this book. I will certainly use it in my classroom. I wish I had the gift of prose so that I could properly give the type of review this book deserves. Not only is it appropriate for use as a tool in helping children to realize their self-worth, it's also a wonderful item for those who wish to collect African-American artifacts but cannot afford the more costly items. The book contains stories and poems written by known writers and by "ordinary" children of 1920-21. It also contains letters from "enquiring" minds. Again, it made me wish I could own the whole collection, not just the best of.

This is truly a brownie experience! More than 100 recipes involving some 62 different ingredients and combo variants thereof. This is brownie heaven!

Brownie the author aptly defines as "a sqare or rectangle of rich, usually chocolate cake often containing nuts or other crunchy morsels; can be chewy, cakelike, or fluffy; thin or thick; frosted or plain' baked or unbaked."

And there you have it, so much to try and then taste.

There is neat section of Health Conscious Brownies, which are the few I've tried so far: Papaya Paradise Browines, Pina Colada Brownies, Luscious Avocado Nut Brownies, and on and on it goes.

There is elegant, and wheel, and non-chocolate, and a brownie orgy extravagance, and "oh, my" is this stuff great!

The author on top of all this brownie creativity does all the illustrations and unique calligraphy.

A treat from front to back, and then some. Try this with cold glass of milk. Now this is living.
