I have read and owned this book. It was published in 1900 as a fund raiser for the deceased miners. The original bound version is getting scarce and includes photos. The book was reprinted by the Utah Railroad and Mining Museum of Helper, Utah as a part of the Centennial Celebration in 2000. The museum is a good source of information with many stories and video clips. However the Museum is volunteer funded and operated and it is not very efficient. I have made a xerox copy of this book. The one I used and read was stolen out of the Provo City Public Library sometime between 1984 and 1992. Other copies can be located at the Utah Historical Society in Salt Lake City.

A History Of Utah's American Indians is an impressive, comprehensive historical survey of Native American inhabitants of Utah, including six Native American tribes recognized as official entities and residing within Utah's boundaries. These include the Northwestern Shoshone, the Goshutes, the Paiutes, the Utes, the White Mesa Utes, and the Navhaos (Dine). Each tribe has its own government, while individual Tribe members are also citizens of Utah and the United States. The numerous contributors cover such issues as origin stories, religion, politics, education, folkways, family life, social activities, economic issues, important events, migration, interaction with whites and among themselves, war, trade, intermarriage, common threats and challenges. Of special note is the introductory chapter providing an overview of Utah's Native Americans and the concluding chapter summarizing the issues and concerns of contemporary Native Americans and their tribal leaders. A History Of Utah's American Indians is a remarkable and very welcome contribution to Native American studies and supplemental reading lists.

Hooper Son's of Ditches was a great read. The book was a funny, tear jerker. Life's lessons are all taught through the eyes of a young boy in small town USA. I am a mom of young boys and I loved looking into the heart and soul of a very active, very interesting boy. It helped me to understand how they tick. It also taught me just how much these little guys are paying attention to all we do and say. Son's of Ditches is packed with fun and adventure. It is a great read for all ages, but is written for adults to look back on childhood.

HorseThief Ranch; An Oral History, by H. Michael Behrendt

When Michael Behrendt purchased Horse Thief Ranch near Moab, Utah in 1981, he set out to document the provenance, history, legends and lore of the place. Its high desert magic and remarkable setting in the heart of the Utah Canyonlands made the effort worthwhile. The author's intent was that others might come to appreciate the mystique of Horse Thief Ranch and those who had loved the ranch so well over the years. Tales of Butch Cassidy and the proximity to Robbers Roost, the Moab locals who called it home, and the legacy of rock art and ancient artifacts found on the ranch lend a sense of adventure to the place that Michael calls his desert home, and the stories told by those who came before him are a wonderful piece of the history of the Southeastern Utah canyon country.

The Hotel Newhouse was imploded in 1983 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Flip book is a series of photos shot from near the implosion over a seven second period showing the building being reduced to rubble.
The pocket size book is reminiscent of the board walk days and arcades, a fun item if you like that sort of thing or stayed at the Newhouse hotel in its heyday.

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Alfredo López Austin is one of the best historians of the ancient prehispanic Mexico. Human Body and Ideology represents the highest level of the understanding of the cosmogonic concepts of the mexicas. The method used by López Austin is extremely complex and well developed, it goes between history, anthropology, sociology and philosopy.

A moving and absorbing account of the experiences of one internee and her family, and the mental and physical hardships they endured. It illuminates a sad chapter in our history.
