Great analysis of the little researched Buffalo SoldierReview Date: 2001-02-03

Truth or Fiction - You decide......Review Date: 1999-09-10
As you would expect the detail and historical accurancy is first class and the story telling rates alongside any other thriller.
The question with this fictional account is just how close is it to the truth?
We now know that a British special forces helicopter was found abandoned and burnt out in Chile, not far from the Argentine border. We also know that an SAS officer was relieved in the field for questioning a "plan" to capture an Argentinian mainland airfield which he belived meant certain suicide for his men.
So the question is.....was there an SAS boat troop ashore in Argentina at that time or is it just a good story?

Presents the British Army of WW I in a new LightReview Date: 2005-05-24
Now, when thrown into WW I they did not know how to command. Further, their staff officers who should have been doing things like planning for supply, movement, and all the other tasks were likewise not experienced in large scale operations.
At the beginning of the war the leadership asked for a few months to train their men, their officers. For political reasons this was turned down and the Army was sent to France.
Dr. Robbins breaks down the war into two major periods. In the first, 1914 to 1916 the army was learning, and unfortunately doing the learning by getting young men killed. By 1917, the most grossly incompetent officers had been releived of command and sent home. The British Army by the end of the war was, as shown by comparison with other armies, the equivalent of any.
I am reminded of certain American generals who were good peacetime generals but failed the test of combat. General Fredendall, of Kasserine Pass fame; Admiral Gormley, Guadalcanal; and General Lucas of Anzio.
This book presents the difficulties of handling the battles in World War I from an entirely different aspect. The thesis of the book makes sense, and it is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in this period. It is extensively researched and very well written

Surprising Analysis of British Leadership in WWIReview Date: 2005-03-23
To cope with the static trench warfare, the British had developed tanks, while the Germans had developed their 'stormtrooper' tactics.
While it is certainly true that the dynamics of the battlefield had changed, in truth so had the British generals. By early 1917 the BEF had developed a new tactical system based on fire and movement much like that of the stormtroopers, and which was to continue to be the basis for infantry assaults until today.
This book brings together a series of articles by a range of writers to analyze what the British did during the war. It shines a whole new light on British leadership.

Dr Fowler researched extensively for this book from little known and altogether scares resources of material. However, all the resources that were available about the Buffalo Soldiers were used and cited accurately in this book. But, the MOST important plus about this book is the interesting stories about the Buffalo Soldiers daily life is told. From the dreary and wretched living conditions the soldier had to endure on a daily basis, to the evident discrimination that the African-American Buffalo Soldier had to endure, to the loyalty and bravery that the Buffalo soldier displayed from guarding a stagecoach run, laying miles of telegraph line, fighting fierce Indians, all these accounts and more are in this book.
I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy a great story and documentation about the little known Buffalo Soldier, the American West and fighting the Native Americans. A Great Read!
