Dr Irene E. Loewenfeld dedicated her life to the study of the pupil - the body's most exquisite esthesiometer and the only living tissue to be seen with eyes only. This monograph is a knowledgeable feast in the ophthalmological tradition of Sir Duke Elder - author of the most comprehensive known medical treatise in all fields, except perhaps for Vinken' manual of neurology ( which is not the work of a single person ). Of course, as readers of these reviews can testify, I can only dream about this glorious tradition to be continued... For after we shall take no more time to dedicate our lives to knowledgeable fields of study, we would form anything else but soul and character. Alas, I'm not unaware of the Zeigeist, now by and large dead since Dr Loewenstein's disappearance. Perhaps it will rise again one day.

With an almost baroque preoccupation with detail, this book, a magnificent masterpiece, shows what a monograph should look like, even in the crowded world of ophthalmology.

The Quality Control, more than a simple discipline must be considered as a way of thinking and living. The author makes a substantial analysis around the traditional approach, enriching it with abundant examples, related with the administrative prevision, control of mistakes, reliability of the product, detection and statistical correction of failures of the process and even laws concerned with the responsibilities of the manufacturer.

In my personal experience this book was a great allied that allowed me to obtain great instruction and conferred me a major vision around the fascinating and always expansive concept of the Quality.

Recommended for the students and teachers of Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering and other branches of the Engineering in general. It is important to remark additionally that the subject of Quality Control, exposed in the context of costs, is of great utility fro the engineers whose objective is minimize the risk of the producer and the consumer.

Great reference for breeders and other applied crop/plant geneticists. Emphasis is on maize, and applications to other outbreeding species but there is equal relevence to workers in self-pollinated species. The section on estimation of variances (mating designs etc.) and effects are among the best around.

An essential volume to have, keep and cherish. It's not bedside reading (...hmmm!!) I regularly refer to my copy when my students aren't reading it themselves!!

These poems are refreshing, startling, witty and warm. Common items in nature speak wisdomand love. Readers who drink from this little treasure will come away refreshed. Both makes me want to travel to Crescent City while feeling like I already have. A joy!

For an assessment of the subtle traffic between literature and law in America, "Reconstituting Authority" is one of the best in its field. I plan to assign it to my students.

Very informative not only in the happenings of a year in and around the town of Peterson, but also an in-depth and easy to understand history of the area begining with the formation of the land during the glacial age. The black & white photos rival the quality of Ansel Adams. This book is more than just and excellent coffee table print. This could be any midwest farming community.

It has been given every year since 1970 by the University of Iowa - and let there be no snide jokes about 'corn country.' The judges are always people with distinguished writing careers of their own. This year's judge was Tobias Wolff, whose 'In the Garden of the North American Martyrs' made quite an impression of its own in 1981.
