This tasty book is full of the smells, textures, colors and lives of the Barrio. Lively, inspiring, heartfelt and sometimes heartbreaking, Ortiz fills this book with individuals whose lives are both representative of immigrated people and yet strikingly the stories of every woman and man. Mostly comprised of short-shorts the occasional poem is also brought in. Not all of the characters are named, and there is a sense that the reader is sometimes getting both the history and the future of the same characters. Marvelously woven, this book is a tapestry of personalities, lives, tastes and aromas. Check this book out for something unique! May I also recommend that a cup of Cuban coffee goes wonderfully!

I ordered Cloudwoman by this author and was so stunned by its beauty that I immediately ordered Build Me a Rainbow and I was NOT disappointed! On this incrdible book, the author not only narrates, she sings.

I wish I could purchase canvasses of Hedrick's art in addition to her books. I'm on my way to collecting them all. Georgia Hedrick's books are mesmerizing and are a bargain at only $!! for 2 cd's

License to Cook Minnesota Style, in the popular recipe-card file size Stocking Stuffer format, is chock-full of the best recipes and notes about the best of Minnesota in the heart of the Midwest. The recipes were compiled by Gerry Kangas of Aurora, Minnesota. She has been an avid cook since she was a girl. With her husband she owned and managed a board and lodging home for over twenty years. The front cover depicts a Minnesota license plate depicting a lake and forest scene, illustrated by Diane Heusinkveld and designed by Dana Lumby.

License to Cook Minnesota Style also includes a information on the state history and a section titled "Marvelous Minnesota." This "land of lakes" has drawn many to its water for fishing, boating, and vacation fun! It is a valuable guide for anyone interested in touring the area. The section includes information on state parks and public preserves, sporting on the Great Lakes, local dining and much more! License to Cook Minnesota Style is a must for tourists and chefs alike!

The Wild Rice and Fish specialties included in this book are wonderful! Try a meal of Spinach-Wild Rice Quiche and Baked Stuffed Lake Superior Trout. Use the Gooseberry Jelly recipe on Finnish Flat Bread! The Meatball Soup is a great way to warm up on those chilly Midwestern days! The Apple Cake with Rum Sauce is sure to have family and friends coming back for more!

License to Cook Minnesota Style is excellent for personal collections and as a memento of Minnesota.

An excellent early biography of a great American. This book tells the story of France Bozeman's early years, growing up in rural Georgia. I particularly enjoyed his detailed description of the painstaking, time consuming and labor intensive process of tobacco farming. Great material on doing laundry by hand. Very funny comments on party line telephones. This book is a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend all of France's books.

I haven't seen this particular edition, but I would very highly recommend reading the Life of this saint. St. Nina is called equal-to-the-apostles and her life is a charming study in missiology as well. Georgian literature is very rich and offers many valuable insights to those who have the will to explore it.

Pubisher's Synopsys of the 2006 reprint edition by Clearfield Publishing.

Review Date: 2007-07-20
This is a list not only of the early settlers of Georgia but of the first settlers of Georgia, and it is apparently a complete list of all those who were sent by the Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia in America under Oglethorpe and the Earl of Egmont. Based on the Egmont manuscripts, now in the possession of the University of Georgia, this list of settlers is given under two headings: first, those who went from Europe to Georgia at the Trustees' expense; and, second, those who went on their own account. Covering the period from 1732 to 1741, these two lists together contain the names and details of 3,000 immigrants, most of whom were assigned lots in Savannah and Frederica and a good number of whom would soon leave the colony for the Carolinas.

Information pertaining to each settler consists, generally, of name, age, occupation, place of origin, names of spouse, children and other family members, dates of embarkation and arrival, place of settlement, and date of death. In addition, some of the more notorious aspects of the settlers' lives are recounted in brief, telltale sketches, which enable the researcher to divine something of the character of the colony and the times.

The Clearfield edition includes E. Merton Coulter's invaluable article on the first shipload of Georgia settlers who sailed on the Anne, 16 November 1732, which was appended to the second printing of Early Settlers in 1967.

Zell Miller will almost certainly be remembered as one of the greatest governors in the history of Georgia, and perhaps in the history of America. This volume includes dozens of speeches and excerpts that give us a glimpse into the world of this great statesman. Governor Miller's programs, particularly in education, have become the foundation for programs throughout the country, and his remarks have inspired politicians of all backgrounds to strive for excellence. President Clinton has praised Governor Miller's words time and time again, and this volume contains the greatest of these speeches, from his HOPE Scholarship program which gave hundreds of thousands of Georgia students the opportunity to attend college, to his unforgettable Keynote speech at the 1992 Democratic National Convention in NY. This volume is a must read for any aspiring politician as well as for anyone interested in this truly great citizen.

An Intimate Perspective

Review Date: 2008-02-19
May has an uncanny ability to immerse the reader in his intimate dealings with the subsets of society he studies. As a participant/observer in this high school basketball community, May is able to both pose and answer questions that the casual reader would never be privileged to embark upon alone. The end result of this work is to share a rare perspective of the struggles faced by the specific black youth of "Northeast" high school, and of the impact of social elements in the creation and attainment of life goals by youth in general. Great book.

Great story and exciting journey for budding explorers

This is a great book for kids. It allows them to learn about another culture, one they have probably never heard of, but that is so ancient and rich. My daughter, age 5, really enjoyed the book. We followed Lizzie's adventures all through Georgia, and it mirrored the adventures and transitions necessary for kids to make too when their parents choose this line of work. I think it's a great book to read to spark imagination and questions about far off places, and also a great book for diplomatic families to read as it addresses moving on and leaving friends, holding on to the opportunity to make new friends in the next place you land.
