Overall, I am very disappointed with this book. I will be teaching a high school creative writing class and I was looking for books that would guide me. The activities are very basic - they would probably work better for elementary and junior high students. The main source of disappointment is the lack of substantial content. The book is only 69 pages (with a lot of blank space on each page). I would have been happy to spend $3-4 on this, but $18 seems like a complete rip off.

Along with Gov. Huckabee, the author of this book shares responsibility for the murders Dumond committed after being released from prison in Arkansas. It is a perfect example of the toxic nature of partisan politics, and especially the GOP focus on Clinton, that anyone accepted this story hook, line and sinker.

Far-right gadfly Guy Reel's fact-challenged propaganda screed recycles and expands the equally frothing serial smear by tabloid-writer and fellow fringe-case Steve Dunleavy. Ranging from distortion to huge dollops of outright falsehood, this book is guaranteed to annoy anyone to the left of Attila the Hun. For the small minority of troglodyte extremists who eagerly lap up each new tortured Clinton conspiracy tome, this book contains nothing not already covered in the plethora of bilious (and probably bibulous) Dumond-worshipping diatribes on Free Republic.
Some interesting facts:
1) Wayne Dumond was not exonerated by DNA evidence - no DNA tests were ever conducted.
2) Contrary to the whitewashing claims of Dunleavy et al, Dumond had a substantial and serious prior criminal record - murder (1972), sexual molestation of a teenager (1973), and ... wait for it ... rape (1976). He dodged the murder charge by ratting out his buddies, and a rape conviction when the victim dropped charges because "she feared for her life" - after which Dumond claimed his earlier confession had been "coerced". He pled guilty to the 1973 molestation charge, for which he received 5 years probation.
3) Two years after his 1999 parole (the result of heavy pressure from governor and current presidential wannabe Mike Huckabee), Dumond raped and murdered Carol Sue Shields, of Parkville, Mo. He was convicted, and recently died in prison.
But because Dumond's first (and luckier) rape victim happened to be a distant relative of Bill Clinton, this serial rapist and murderer became a saintly martyr in the eyes of Reel, Dunleavy and their Freeper groupies. And these are the people (check out some of Guy Reel's anti-Democrat diatribes) who bash liberals for being "soft on crime".

The blurb on the back of this collection is highly misleading, since most of these letters were translated into English long, long before their publication in this book. It was originally published in Russian in 1990, so the "newly translated" might refer to the 1995 publication in the US. If you're really interested in Chekhov's letters, read Karlinsky and Heim's book...it can't be beat.

Where do you start? Historical errors, misspellings, different names for the same people, totally off-topic chapters and appendices, lack of documentation, chronological errors, etc, etc, etc? It's all there, and anyone who knows anything about the Red River Campaign will not know whether to laugh or scream after reading this book. This book could not possibly have been proofread before publishing. An absolute waste of time and money, both for the reader and the author. Do not buy this book.

This is advertised as a "Brief Article", but is advertised as "The length of the article is 2593 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page." Based on that, I would have expected over 8 pages. However, it was merely 1.5 pages and contained nothing new. Save your $5.95 and do a simple Google search.

Fred Pfister's guide is bad in a number of ways.
One, although it says it was repressed as of 2006, it was hopelessly outdated as of Sep. 2007. We went to Sadie's Sideboard & Smokehouse because Pfister recommended the gooseberry pie (P.72), but they didn't sell it and hadn't sold it in recent memory. We also went to the Farmhouse Restaurant, which Pfister said closed at midnight (P.69). As it turned out, they closed at nine, and a waitress of four years said it had as long as she had been working there.
Two, Pfister sabotaged our vacation with miserably bad recommendations. Example one, Pfister recommends the Glade Top Trail as a scenic drive (P.201). He fails to mention that although it is close to Branson as the crow flies, it's about an hour and a half drive each way due to the twisty country roads that lead to it. He also fails to mention that the drive does not showcase the majestic mountain vistas that the Ozarks are famous for, but the trail is just a narrow dirt road lined with trees, so it does not at all warrant the trouble it takes to get there. Example two, Pfister recommends Stage Door Canteen as a restaurant "decorated like a World War II canteen," selling "roast turkey with walnut dressing and the chicken and dumplings," (P.72). My wife and I went there excited to try these items, but what we found was a buffet befitting a hospital, an interior that was decorated like a shopping center food court, and a very small clientele whose average age was 80.
Three, the book offers only one very mediocre map, which does not show the locations of the sites and restaurants it recommends.
Four, there are no color photos in this book and only around a dozen very small B&W photos.
In short, going to Branson with no book would better prepare you than Pfister's book will. Avoid like the plague.

Once again, I fail to see that Miss Blair's life merits the time and money spent to record it, as I fail to see any real contribution this individual has made to society or to history. Her primary goal in life seems to have been maintaining the superficial facade so typical of the dilettante "class" of people that she aligned herself with. The DAR and similar groups, which the Blair family aligned themselves with, are based solely on "family lineage," and have no real value in society other than to perpetuate a barbaric code of "snob appeal" based on "whose ancestors got here first." The native-Ameicans, of course, got here first, and the other Americans who arrived before, during, and after the Blair family did most of the work that made America the nation that it is, and did most of the work that enabled Violet Blair and others like her to enjoy those comforts and privileges that she enjoyed and to maintain an aire of exclusiveness and snobbery.
