Extremely Informative; A MUST for Missouri Route 66 travel

Although I may be biased, (since C.H. "Skip" Curtis is my mother's boyfriend), I really loved this book. It's extremely informative for anyone--novice to expert--who travels on MO Route 66. Skip knows everything there is to know about Route 66; he's the editor of the Missouri Route 66 Magazine and he travels the road every time he visits my mom (which is a good 200 miles one way). Since I grew up on the Mother Road, I thought I knew every old hotel and shady bar on the route, but I was mistaken. Skip fills his book with two road maps (one from St. Louis going to Joplin and another vice versa), so you won't get lost. Also, there are tons of old photographs and postcards. Plus, my mom, my '55 Chevy and my favorite building are in the book; which puts it on the top of my book list. If you buy his book, you'll become a Missouri Route 66 expert (which comes in handy for parties), he'll become rich and I'll get more birthday presents (so, it's an investment we can all enjoy)! If you have any questions after you buy his book, write to him and he'll be more than happy to assist you. Or you can just ask him what C.H. stand for

Nate Evans has created a Grahame Base, Dr. Seuss- type book that is a fun read for young and old. Lessons about boasting, cynicism, greediness all rolled up into one fun book. Bongo and Lu have their work cut out for them as they help Prof. Yahoo find "animals" for the queen's zoo. The fact that the Professor has lost his glasses is of no concern to him! One last slip at the end of the day saves the day.

Does Nate Evans have any more books I should know about?

Absolutely Loved this Book!

Great guidebook based on experience by the authors.

Glenn Monahan's book, Montana's Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River, 2nd edition, is written clearly and accurately. Lewis and Clark first described this portion of the Missouri in their annals of 1805. Construction of the Fort Peck Dam has changed the course of the river since that date. And one will not see grizzly bear or buffalo as documented by the Expedition in what was then Montana Territory.

For travelers who are canoeing, rafting or exploring outcroppings on foot, Monahan gives a play-by-play of scenic changes and their identification. His historical accounts and pictures satisfy curiosity and bridge a 200-year gap.

Upper Missouri River, Montana: Guidebook

One of the co-authors of this book operates a river outfitting business, Upper Missouri River Guides, and thus has first hand knowledge of the Upper Missouri; the second co-author worked as a Bureau of Land Management River Manager for the Upper Missouri, and is a past president of the non-profit National Association for Interpretation.

This book is the only available guide book for Montana's Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Having this book in your canoe will significantly enhahce your experience on the river. The core of the book is the "History Digest", consisting of a 175 page, mile-by-mile river log of historic events and locations along the river, keyed to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management maps that are commonly used by floaters. Canoe paddlers can identify their location on the BLM maps, and cross-reference their location with the History Digest to read about the history of that particular location.

The history digest includes over one hundred descriptive narratives which provide interesting information about each of the thirteen Lewis and Clark campsites on the Upper Missouri, as well as on the fur trading fort sites, steamboat landings, Indian habitation sites, and the old homestead buildings that floaters pass on the river.

Additional chapters include: "Historical Overview", "Geology", "Wildlife", and a chapter entitled "Floating the Missouri", which provides information and tips for persons planning a float trip on Montana's Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.

A grand conflict of three groups of people with very different goals

A cult has goals. Some of them are harmless- some of them are self-destructive, but some of them still have far more sinister plots. "Mortal Shield" is the tale of one of these cults, planning on eliminating the governor - and the governor's protectors know of this. The governor and his family, however, just want a normal life without agents blocking them every step of the way . "Mortal Shield" is a grand conflict of three groups of people with very different goals and how all of their intentions clash in an incredibly interesting tale with no clear outcome - "Mortal Shield" is highly recommended for any thriller fan and any library collection collecting them.

Heather Shaw, ForeWord Magazine, May 2008

This is Taylor's first novel, but there's nothing amateur about it. It walks and talks just like SOF (special operation forces). . . . Mortal Shield is a kind of anecdotal manifesto of why some people choose a career where death is not a penalty for failure but the ultimate sacrifice for success. Taylor is at work on a sequel: this is definitely a series that will interest fans of Clancy and Flynn.

Good bio of a frontiersman

Review Date: 2005-06-15
Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, was a prominent person in early 19th century Missouri. Following in the footsteps of his father he took up residence on the frontier and made a hazardous living as a trapper, long hunter, surveyor and soldier. He became a militia captain in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk war of 1832 and participated in early U.S. army explorations of the Great Plains. His life was interesting and exciting and moderately important.

The author has turned out a well-written and researched scholarly biography of Boone. I was impressed with his ability to make Boone and his family come alive and to string together a coherent narrative from many sources. The book is an significant contribution to the history of the American frontier, especially for its insights about White relations with Indian tribes such as the Osage, Potawatomi, Sauk, Wichita, and Cherokee. Boone was a competent, unspectacular exemplar of the American frontiersman on the Middle Border.

Those with an interest in the frontier history of Missouri and nearby states, especially the uneasy relationships between Whites and Indians will find this book worth reading.

The Original Son of the Pioneer

While Daniel Boone has become an icon of the American frontier experience and a celebrated pathmarker of America's westward movement, in this informative and entertaining book R. Douglas Hurt makes the case that Boone's youngest son, Nathan, deserves a place there as well. Born in Kentucky in 1781, Nathan Boone learned the skills of the hunter and woodsman from his father and developed both an affinity and an aptitude for the environment very early. He continued his father's wanderlust by moving westward to Missouri as a young man and remaining on the outposts of the United States throughout his life. In so doing, he earned a livelihood as a hunter, trapper, guide, surveyor, and military officer.

The central feature of Nathan Boone's life, and the core of this biography, was his military service. During the War of 1812 he led a company of rangers on campaigns in the Old Northwest. In 1832, at the age of 51, he organized his own company of Missouri Rangers for the Black Hawk War. This time, at the end of the conflict Nathan Boone transferred to the regular army's dragoons at Fort Leavenworth. He remained on active duty from 1833 until forced to take a final leave of absence in 1848. He maintained his commission, even if not on active duty, until 1853 when health finally prompted his resignation. Serving under Stephen Watts Kearny on the Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma frontier suited Boone just fine. He also acquitted himself well as a captain in the dragoons and was called upon to lead several expeditions during his active service to patrol the region. He did not, however, accompany Kearny's Army of the West in its invasion of New Mexico and California in 1846, remaining behind on garrison duty in Oklahoma.

This is a straightforward and competent biography. Capably researched and written, it rescues from nearly complete obscurity a figure of moderate significance in the American West in the mid-nineteenth century. Proceeding chronologically, it also excels at describing the role of the army on the frontier in those periods when war was not taking place. As such it is a welcome addition to the historical literature. It is also a worthwhile addition to the "Missouri Biography Series" in which it appears.

After years of researching their subject throughout the world, Ian Sayer and Douglas Botting first published this book in 1984. Their research began in response to a very simple question. What happened to the German National Gold Reserves after World War II? The answer proves shocking.
Aside from bringing the reader into the fascinating world of Postwar Black Marketeering and corruption, the book relates how a veritable Aladin's Cave of treasure disapeared into the pockets of Crooked S. S. men, K. G. B. stooges, and members of the United States Military, whose occupation of Germany was corrupt from top to bottom. This book remains a timeless reminder that no matter what uniform we wear, we're all dirty as Hell.

A very scholarly written book. An excellent reference source for those researching the Osage Indian. However, the Author or publisher goofed on one of the References/Source cited: He cites " Wiggers, Robert "Osage Culture Change Inferred from Contact and Trade with the Caddo and Pawnee" an unpublished PH.D Dissertation, University of Missouri 1985. The Author of this Dissertation is Robert Wiegers, Professor of History, Central Methodist College, Fayette, MO. I am a former student of his and have a copy of the Dissertation. This is probably a typographical error, but it would confuse the researcher.
