This book is great for the true researcher.
It gives the years in which each County conatins what records which will save a lot of phone calls & trips.
It refers to other wonderful books that one can get to trace something inparticular. It also refers to finding Alabama research in other States which I found most helpful.

The Transformation Of The Southeastern Indians 1540-1760 edited by Robbie Ethridge (Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Southern Studies, University of Mississippi) and Charles Hudson (Franklin Professor of Anthropology and History, University of Georgia) is an impressive and wide-ranging selection of contemporary essays presenting and showcasing the latest discoveries and interpretations of how the Native Americans of the Southeast once lived, and their interactions with settlers prior to the establishment of The United States of America. A scholarly, seminal text featuring work by a diverse collection of learned authors, The Transformation Of The Southeastern Indians 1540-1760 is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to Native American Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

This is a "must" companion piece for anyone who drives the Natchez Trace, whether for 4 miles or 400. Without the book's detailed information about the Trace's history, the towns it runs through, and the many recreational opportunities along the way, the Trace would be just another road. The Summerlin's book and their subject remind us that life is indeed a journey, not a destination

Triumph of Goodwill is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the pivotal 1960 gubernatorial race in North Carolina and the ramifications of that election throughout the South and the rest of the nation. Told in great detail, here is the story of how racial moderate Terry Sanford won the Democratic nomination for governor against a patron of segregation Beverly Lake. The book also details Sanford's controversial decision to become the first Southern politician to endores John Kennedy for the presidency, a decison that was filled with potential peril for Sanford, but one that paid off handsomely for the eventual governor of North Carolina. Mixed into this work are behind the scenes stories of the 1960 campaign in North Carolina that give the reader a peek into how elections used to be conducted and also the beginnings of how they have become to be run in our present day. TV played a large part in the national election in 1960, but television also played an important role in the North Carolina governor's race that year, including what is thought to be the first-time live television broadcast of a candidate's political rallys. Triumph of Good Will is an excellent work, highly readable and highly recommended!

I started out as a big fan of Lillian McMurry's biggest discovery Sonny Boy Williamson but I ended up as a big fan of Lillian's. Lillian McMurry the founder of Trumpet Records was my best friend for the last four years of her life and I think I as her best friend. She just ooozed the blues from her soul. This book is HER story as much as that of her artists. A movie is being planned about Lillian's life in the blues and I hope it does her justice but for now enjoy Marc Ryans insightful and delightful book.

After taking an amazing class with Dr. Jordan, who is just as good of a teacher as he is a writer, I decided to take a look at his well-known book. It is truly one of the great pieces of historical writing I have read, as he is able to pull together a complete story based upon references from a single document. While he's talking about this single event, he gives great insight into the mind of an historian that will inspire any student of history into delving deeper into practically any subject.

I found this a fascinating visual record of the TVA and its work over the relevant years, 1933 to 1963. Patricia Ezzell, the TVA's historian, has selected 135 one-per-page photographs from more than twenty thousand in the archives and they really do reflect the wide range of activities the Authority was involved in, dam and reservoir building, power generation, fertilizer production, reforestation, mapping and surveying, flood control and more.

The book is divided into three sections, Depression Era, War Effort and Growth and Change. Although social photographer Lewis Hine was hired for a month in 1933 and contributed 197 photos in that time the majority of photos in the book are by Charles Krutch. He took thousands and it is the range of subject matter that makes the book so interesting to me. As well as the obvious technical shots of dam construction Krutch also photographed temporary house building for construction workers, village and small town life, recreation centers, farming and folks relaxing in their homes enjoying the benefits of cheap TVA electricity.

The photos in the last section, Growth and Change (basically from 1945 to 1963) are devoted to the everyday. The TVA was by then established and you can see photos of transmission lines, aerial shots of large corporate plants, increased freight traffic on the Tennessee River, school visits to farms and even the contestants of the Miss Guntersville Lake Beauty Pageant. All thanks to the vision of the Roosevelt government years earlier.

The book is well printed and designed and the author writes a brief introduction to the TVA. The back includes a useful bibliography and index. My only criticism is that the map on page seven is woefully inadequate, the excellent captions with each photo mention places that I wanted to find out where they were but couldn't, I ended up using the TVA's interactive map on their website. Apart from the map this is a wonderful book about a huge endeavour that really made a difference to so many people.

Having read a number of books and articles on the subject, I can say the this book is the most easily readable of all. It explains very complex topics in terms that lets one read and understand quickly, unlike many comprehensive texts that are not really directed to the layman.

Dr. Uthman presents the physiology of anemia (and its different types) in a straightforward manner. As he mentions in the book, it is written for someone with the equivalent of a high school level of biology. Dr. Uthman takes the reader step-by-step through the process - like a chef teaching someone a recipe. Starting from general discussion on anemia to how it is clinically diagnosed and even how blood tests are performed! Anyone who needs to know about anemia should read this book. The book can also be picked up and used as a reference. The Table of Contents describe quite clearly where to find specific topics.

I came to this book as it was recommended to me by a friend. I am not usually a fan of medical work, but I found this book to be entrhalling. The clarity and luminity in which Dr. Lieberman explains the many facets of this illness is enlightening. I was especially impressed that even though I had no real background in this field I was easily able to understand the concepts and ideas put forth. Dr. Lieberman is a medical genius who deserves far more recognition across the world, and not just in the medical field. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates works of intelligence, clarity and thoughtfulness.
