Great book, great memories, especially for anyone who's ever spent a summer in the North Woods. If the words "Sawbill," "Muggs
Lorber" or "Upper Diamond" mean something to you, you'll find yourself reading these poems again and again.

VERY GOOD, BUT DESERVES AN UPDATE

I guess like many, my first approach to Zhang Yimou was through his epic masterpiece "Hero". Then, I started to watch his
prior works. And then I started to read about him. I'd say this book is as good as the other books in the "Conversations With
Filmmakers" series of the University Press of Mississippi. Also, it's the best book I've read so far, either in English or
in Spanish, not only about the most important contemporary Chinese director, but actually, about his entire generation. The
only problem: it's already missing six films, from "Happy Times" to his collaboration in "Chacun son cinéma". As good as it
is, I'd say it's already waiting for an update.

This book is a precious collection of interviews with the great Chinese movie director, Zhang Yimou, whom we should be grateful
for having been generous in donating some of his time in answering questions from a long queue of various film critics, journalists,
and academics from all over the world who were fortunate enough to get a hold of him personally in candid, frank, and honest
one-to-one conversations.
These interviews give a thorough first-hand insight into the genious of perhaps one of the greatest movie director in our times, whose world-acclaimed achievements include towering movies such as 'Red the Raise Lantern', 'To Live', 'Not One Less', 'Happy Times', and amongst a few others...
When speaking about his movies, Zhang Yimou speaks with a characteristically clear, concise voice and with a wide open heart. He has shown great ability to eloquently and articulately express his thoughts which come straight out from the words of his own mouth, giving us a direct insight to his ideas and personal philosophies. In these interviews, he speaks with a very personal and passionate voice, answering and making counter-arguments to his interviewers' questions and assumptions.
From the interviews, Zhang Yimou shares a wide-ranging views about what he intends to convey through his movies -- the various multifaceted aspects of modern and ancient China, namely Chinese culture and tradition, its people and their lives in different distinct periods of Chinese history...
Overall, this book a valuable source for studying and understanding the director himself and his works.

An intriguing, albeit fictional, account of the American Civil War

A Time For Glory: 1861 by R. B. Greenwalt is an intriguing, albeit fictional, account of the American Civil War and the lives
of soldier and civilians caught up in that tumultuous time. Following the life of Joshua Campbell through his experience with
the Confederate army through battle, leadership, a soldier life and love, A Time For Glory: 1861 then carries readers over
to the life and experiences of Elihu Hawthorne, a Massachusetts Congressman affected by the radical vision of the republican
party, and a perpetual fear of capture by the enemy. An original, well crafted, and entertaining novel showcasing quite diverse
perspectives of Civil War combatants, A Time For Glory: 1861 is especially commended to readers and would make a popular addition
to community library collections.

Great overview of Asian History

This book offers an excellent overview of East Asian history. It is not a through account of every event that happened in
the time period but it provides a great framework for further study. After going through this book the reader can identify
parts of Asian history, from the BC era in China to the reconstruction of Asia after World War II, for further in-depth study.
It is easy to read although there is a large amount of information packed into a very small amount of pages so while easy
it is not a light read by any means. Overall it is a great textbook on East Asian history and wonderful for those who are
just getting started in that area.

What a romp! What clever, poignant, delicious fun! This collection of stories about folks on the downhill side of 40, is not
only a grand idea, it's a superb execution. The editors have chosen compelling, often surprising pieces by such writers as
Freerick Barthelme, Alice Mattison, Antonya Nelson, Gish Jen, and Robin Hemley to explore the lives of protagonists too seldom
featured in contemporary short fiction: in between the "wise elder" and the "youthful rebel," we find a figure, more solid,
more wistful, and much more human -- the man (or woman) in the middle. Like Janus, this protagonist looks both forward and
back, raising children and taking care of aging parents, scrambling at work and looking seeking solace in play. Whether or
not you fall into this age group, do yourself a favor and savor these stories!

Nephew Jim Faulkner talks about his famous uncle. These stories will be appreciated by Faulkner fans-- no one else. The
nine stories provide a look at an off-duty Faulkner. One of the more interesting tales explains why Oxford has two Confederate
monuments.

Kindle is bound to attract a lot of cheap and terribly formatted books. Watch out for them. This book is a clear exception.
It seems that all too often literary classics are hashed out by major publishing companies who operate under the belief that simply because a book is well known it is no longer necessary to manufacture it with care. I am happy that such a wonderful work of literature (this was the first great American novel after all!) was well formatter, with care that gives due respect to the outstanding quality of the text. A Fantastic bargain.

I am a firm believer that young people should read as many of the classics as possible, preferably in their original form.
However, the realist in me understands that appealing to modern children often means that modern techniques must be used.
This book uses simpler and more modern language to tell the story of Tom, Huck and Becky.
None of the charm and humor of the original story is lost. It is still exciting; there is still the thrill of boys carrying out a great adventure and slowly, despite all their attempts to avoid it, growing up. There are many illustrations, which are minimally drawn in black and white, yet give more life to the story.
This book would be an appropriate selection for classes of young people where the assignment is to read this great and exciting classic adventure.
