I am Bob S. Stearns with the Oregon Dept. of Forestry - Santiam Unit. I am personally dealing with recreational issues on state lands regarding a couple of waterfalls in this publication. Some information has changed with these locations and the publication should be altered to show that. Thank you for any correspondence. Please call at (503)859-2151 or write at adresses listed above. Thank you.

Stacey has many talents of the great game of life and believe it or not, they are almost all useful to the Californian Mountainman. His book is very funny it is very hard to put it down when nature calls.

For the outdoor lover - at once philosophical and humerous.

Gebhards writes of his experiences in lucid prose expressing his love for the wilderness with philosopical insights punctuated with humerous anecdotes. He traces his enchantment with the "Wild Thing" from his boyhood in the Mississippi bottom lands to the formalization of his education at Utah State University to his employment as an Idaho fishery biologist, mule skinner, folk musician, reluctant politician, winter survivalist, camp cook, wilderness meteorologist and wild river runner. His tales are loaded with humor sometimes wry and other times raucous. A modern mountain man, Gebhards' love of the Rocky Mountain wilderness is unrelenting as it is passed on to the reader.

My favorite North Idaho field guide!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-25
This book is fantastic. It's well organized, easy to navigate and very informative in a concise manner. As a photogrpher I use this book to help me identify wildflowers that I've photographed. It's amazingly helpful to have the full color photographs as visual markers. I also enjoy the commentary which includes interesting facts and tidbits (did you know wild birds feed on lupine seeds?) So far I have not photographed a flower I can't find in this guide. I don't believe it's all inclusive, but it is a darned good start.

This is the book I take in the field and flip through almost daily!

This book is orgranized for easy identification of over 200 wildflowers of the Inland Northwest. You don't have to know what you're looking for to find it. You first search by color, then by number of petals, then by picture (every flower has a photograph). It includes indexes by common names, scientific names, and by color.

The book also contains trivia and folklore associated with many of the flowers. For instance, in it you will find out how Strawberries and Mustard got their names, whose stems were used by the Native Americans of the Northwest to make arrows, and whose leaves' smoke was inhaled as a headache remedy.

On a personal note: This book was written by my parents, just everyday people with a genuine love and respect for nature. All photographs (but one) were taken by my father on his retirement excursions. Unfortunately, he did not live to see it published, but we all rejoice at their novel accomplishment.

This book is like reading Tom Sawyer by Twain, Penrod by Tarkington, and sometimes like James Thurber. It is also something like the biography of Thomas A. Edison. A website about this book can be found at: http://members.aol.com/lhchristen/index.htm

A Classic Work of Hemingway Biography-- Plus Letters!
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-20
Originally published in 1962, At the Hemingways, by Ernest Hemingway's eldest sister, Marcelline, is a classic biography that's long been out of print. In celebration of this year's centennial of Hemingway's birth, the book has been republished with some attractive additions, giving Hemingway aficionados a fine opportunity to add an important volume to their bookshelves. Marcelline Sanford Hemingway recounts in immensely readable prose and in rich detail all the excitement of growing up in a large and unique family gifted in the arts and sciences. She recaptures both the cultural ferment of turn-of-the-century Chicago and the rustic tranquility of the Michigan woods, bringing the years of Hemingway's childhood and the various influences at play on his development alive as no one else could. What's more, this handsome new edition includes a foreword by Hemingway biographer Michael Reynolds, and, still more exciting, 50 years of previously unpublished letters between Hemingway and his sister, tracing their relationship from childhood up to Hemingway's suicide in 1961. A number of the Hemingway letters home from camping trips in Michigan, from the hospital where he convalesced from his wounding in WW I, and from Paris and Pamplona, are real treasures.
