A beautiful insight into river life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

This lovely picture book does what most of us -- child or adult -- don't have the time or opportunity to do: watch the same river scene for a whole day just to see who shows up and what happens. With each turn of a page, we advance two hours and encounter a variety of creatures, from moose to dragonfly. The two-hour intervals begin at 6 a.m. and continue until the next morning at 6 a.m. Wadsworth's natural information is good, and Kratter's paintings combine well with the words to make it a unified presentation. His colorful illustrations have a watery, river-like look to them, which are just perfect for this book.

"River Discoveries" is great for reading aloud at story hour and for introducing children of any age to a river habitat. The helpful end-page glossary defines concepts that might be new to the youngest readers.

This is a book that young nature lovers will never outgrow. In fact, it's difficult to close the cover and put the book aside. When you finish it once, you find yourself turning right back to the beginning and reading through it again.

Great Beta, throw your old guide away and find new climbs.

It has finally arrived. The bible that everyone in the Salt Lake valley has been waiting for. No, it's not another religious doctrine. It is the guide to the diverse canyons of the Wasatch Range surrounding Salt Lake City, Utah. It's bigger and a whole lot better than the Ruckman's old guide. The guidebook covers all of the canyons that were in the previous guide, plus it covers new developments such as City Creek and Neffs Canyon. The Ruckmans follow the same format they used in their old guide, so don't expect many changes in that department. However, to say that this is only a revised edition is an understatement.

The guide is twice as thick as previous editions and covers almost twice as many routes. It is a little bit more expensive, but it is worth it if you want to find the areas like the Shore Line Crag, Broads Fork and a plethora of new routes throughout the Wasatch. The only shortcoming of the guide is its short mention of the bouldering areas. The guide des! cribes the locations of the bouldering areas but it does not describe any of the routes. This was probably done in order to save space and money but it would be nice for the Ruckmans to pass on some bouldering beta. Overall impression, the guide is an excellent investment and a good excuse to replace your old torn up guide.

In `Sacajawea's People' Mann writes with the accuracy and flavor of Ambrose, and a touch of western narrative resembling Stegner. A must read for anybody remotely interested in the tale of the Corps of Discovery, and the fallout that ensued from that momentous journey. Perfectly timed with the bicentennial of the expedition.

Flowing through the largest wilderness region in the lower 48 states, Idaho's Salmon River courses through an area almost the size of the state of Ohio. This region popularly called the "Salmon River Country" is pretty much the same as it was 200 years ago when Lewis and Clark explored the river's headwaters. Now photographer Mark Lisk has showcased the wild beauty of the river and some of the hardy people who live and work along this spectacular waterway in Salmon River Country. Enhanced with an informed and informative wilderness essay by Stephen Stuebner, Salmon River Country's more than 100 superbly presented full color photographs make paging through this coffeetable book a true and highly recommended treat for the armchair traveler and an inspiration for anyone to make their own excursion along one of the loveliest wilderness rivers America has to offer.

This 1977 tome is quite scientific and presents papers from Krantz, Wayne Suttles, Dmitri Bayanov and Gordon Strasenburgh. Subjects such as Sasquatch footprints, handprints, Cultural Native American and First Nations legends and the study of hominology in Russia. I do recommend this book if you can find it, because it is a rare and historic look at the subject which is quite enthralling.

Madsen has done the landmark book for western history afficionados, as well as for historians who want to delve into documentation on the Bear River Massacre.
His impeccable research, with enough depth for scholars, seemingly has a view towards the eye of the average reader as well.

Anyone who wants a feel for this tragic chapter in Native History, with plenty of heavily footnoted documentation, will find Madsens book a great addition to their research library.
I recommend it highly!
