A Great Inspirational and Motivational Story

I loved this story! It is full of interesting and fun stories of how Ruth overcame her battle with cancer. It is also very encouraging to read about how when pushed, the body can do amazing things. It is a great read for those of us who need a push out the door in the morning to exercise. As a vegan, I loved the recipe ideas and the cheap food costs she advocates. It prompted me to buy McDougall books as well.

Fabulous Book of Images and History

I was given this book as a gift and it is one of my favorite books to just browse through. It is filled with wonderful black and white photos and informative text telling the history of the Hawaiian Railroads on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai. Besides the amazing photographs, there are maps, timetables and sample tickets depicting the whole train culture. I highly reccommend this book if you can even find it because it is now out of print.

A great book for ball players and fans
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-09
Riley Wallace, the long-time head basketbal coach at the University of Hawai'i, is one of college basketball's best. What's more, Wallace is one of the true class acts in sports.

This book is a reflection of all that Wallace is, what he stands for and how he coaches. It is a very valuable tool for communicating to the young ballplayer (middle school and high school players should read this over and over), as well as provides insight for the basketball fan.

Highly recommended.

Something besides farm animals!

Like Seashore Touch n See Hawaii, this book is a wonderful version of the touch and say books! Finally, my son and I can touch and say other animals besides cats, dogs, zoo, and farm animals! My son recieved this book as a gift from Grandma when she came home from Hawaii. The handle makes it easy for him to carry around with him, and he often chooses it out of the MANY other books he has. A definite buy!

The only two drawbacks: more exspensive than some other books and not a lot of words--still worth it, though! :-)

This is a fun book! Drawings in the "Believe It Or Not" style of amusing things around and about Hawaii. Not always politically correct and almost never believable, they will none-the-less draw a chuckle.

Nice "Word Portrait" of a Soto Zen Patriarch
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

This thin little volume is a fine example of the "recorded sayings" genre of Chan/Zen literature. Enigmatic yet humorous, unpretentious yet profound, terse yet poetic. William Powell really catches the flavor of the text in his translation, and his introduction and annotations helpfully orient the reader and fill in the knowledge that the anonymous writers/compilers would have assumed on the part of their readership. The approach is scholarly and sensitive to the work's literary qualtities and religious significance at the same time. An afternoon with "The Record of Tung-shan" is an afternoon well-spent.

Mr. Long was searching for the way Hawaiian Kahunas perform the healings, and other things such as fire walking, etc.

This book has 50 case studies that I found facinating, and I recommend it highly to you.

This book does not disclose how the Kahunas do what they do, but I intend to buy more books by this author to see if he did discover the secret of secrets.

I am a saltwater aquarist that is in love with the coral reef and the ocean. I absolutely treasure this book. The detail and time spent to create this is intense. What a magnificent piece of work! Before I go to work, I poor a cup a coffee and browse through the pages a little at a time and think how much I'd rather be tracking these intresting and intrensic species that the ocean has to offer.

I purchased this map so that I could locate the rental property I was considering. It was tremendously helpful. I am able to find landmarks and make informed vacation plans. A wise purchase! I would recommend this to anyone considering a vacation to this "less travelled" island.
