Good guide for obvious places and spots you never thought of
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-28
This Frommer's Guide got me where I wanted to go -- and pointed out a few places that I never would have thought of. Sure, it's a great guide for Baltimore, Annapolis, the Eastern Shore. The information on area restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions are great. Plus there were some interesting tidbits about out-of-the-way places worth a visit. I never thought about a trip to Wilmington for instance. Yet after reading this book I found some great places to visit: good restaurants, a beautiful inn, and an intriguing contemporary museum, for instance.
The reviews were accurate and didn't steer me wrong once. It's a solid guide for both states.

the presence of the Jews in early America and relation to George Washington
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-03
Small numbers of Jews were among the early settlers in all parts of the American colonies. Some of these were escaping the Spanish Inquisition. Jews mostly came to America to escape religious persecution and be able to practice their religion freely, as the early English settlers did. Although the small minority groups of Jews faced prejudices from some quarters, in the colonies they found defenders. And in some cases they found high-placed individuals who integrated some of them into prominent positions with important public responsibilities. Though he had mixed feelings toward the Jews, the founder and leader of Georgia, General Oglethorpe, gave them land equally with the Presbyterians, Lutherans, Moravians, and other Protestant sects in the colony. In the War of Jenkins Ear against the Spanish in Florida, Oglethorpe appointed the Jew Benjamin Sheftall an officer in the Georgia militia. The varying fortunes of Jews as a group and individual Jews are recounted as a part of the larger story of the example of democratic principles George Washington set. The last chapter ties Washington's wish that his slaves be freed after his death with his vision of religious tolerance for all. Some of his clearest, most-cited statements on religious tolerance, freedom, and equality were made in synagogues or with unmistakable references to Jews in certain locales, in Newport, RI, for example. Down to today, Jews look to Washington as the particular Founding Father making America a place where they could practice their religion freely and be accepted in the society.

One of the great Lighthouse books. Covering all the lighthouses, lightships, and range lights from Philadelphia to Fenwick Island to Cape May, the authors give a detailed history of each light, with information gleamed from official records, local newspaper accounts, and annual reports of various lighthouse boards. Numerous photographs accompany each site. The book is not just a tourist guide, but a thorough historical account of the lights in this location. Printed on slick, durable paper, the book is meant to serve its purpose for many years to come. All lighthouses that stood along the Bay or river are included, even those that have long disappeared. Lighthouse enthusiasts will enjoy this book immensely.

I also own the Pennsylvania Handbook by the same author, and I'm continually amazed by her ability to search out the odd little museums and restaurants that really make a destination unique. In Maryland, you can polka the night away after visiting an out-of-the-way military code museum. And, I enjoy the sly humor that kind of sneaks up on you: "In the film Star Wars, Luke was misdirected when he was told to beware The Dockside. This friendly, casual restaurant...is a good place for inexpensive meals from breakfast ($5) through dinner ($6-9). Lots of Crisfield watermen eat here." (from the Eastern Shore section). Like all Moon Handbooks, this one makes the ordinary come alive, covers the whole area extremely well, and is fun to read.

IT is based around Richard Lewis' experience as an Airforce man that gets shot down and travels his way through the underground with help from the people and finally gets caught and gets taken to one of Hitler's camps and tells of his fear and what psychological games were played with them- from wearing old bloody airforceman uniforms- to no heat or blasting them with it! THe details are wonderful in this book.. you can invision each and every phase this brave man - along with many others faced and lived to tell about it and share with his family and the rest of the world! A Christian perspective on the Delaware People
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-07
This excellent book gives a keen insight into the lives of the Delaware People. As a missionary to the American Indians in the early 1700's, John Heckewelder set to understanding these people inorder to bring to them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This book was actually written to his supporters not only for them to understand what he was doing, but also to train other missionaries before sending them into the wilderness. With clear descriptions and an almost overwhelming amount of understandable detail, Mr. Heckewelder brings to life the People whom he loved and understood. It is a great resource for novelists with not only the descriptions of everyday life as well as special situations or celebrations, but he also adds in the back a vocabulary and phrase listing that is most helpful. He covers every part of their lives~ food, marriage, birth and death and every thing in between With his understanding of The People, and the way they think, he has brought to light many of the reasons behind the wars between the whites and Indians for the generations that followed. If only the men of his time had tried to understand The People as he did, perhaps many a death would have been avoided. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the TRUTH about how the Deleware People lived in the 1700's.
