Kent, Connecticut History Goes Beyond One Town

The title of this book can be somewhat intimidating. Do not let it be so! Grant is seeking to find if the small towns of New England were organized in a democratic fashion. I found Grant's work to be more than a question of democracy, and more than a book about the town of Kent. The period covered in the book is approximately 1732-1800. Great social history emerges from this work, both on a regional basis and a much larger one- that of many similar New England towns. I chose this book as a genealogist looking for background material on one of my ancestral towns. It certainly gave me that, and more. Gaining an understanding of life during the time covered in the book was most helpful. In addition, many people from the town of Kent are specifically mentioned, a plus for Kent researchers. I would recommend this to anyone who is a history buff, especially if interested in New England. If you are looking for a no-brainer, this is not your book. But it is not dry or complicated either. I would say that the author reaches a wide audience in his style. It is not for anyone who does not wish to give the question raised some thought. I finished it quickly and will read it again.

A serious look at a suburban Conservative synagogue
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.

This is a serious consideration of a suburban synagogue. It provides good feel for what goes on both in the religious and social side of the institution. Reminds one of Synagogue Life by Heilman, although without some of the conceptualization and with a very different writing style. Good for anyone who wants to see what goes on in those suburban temples.

The reason i give this book 3 stars is because it gives a idea of what they might have thought about and the idea's he thinks they have had interest me. Especially the idea that someone stole the moon i liked that because they dont know anything so they are like little kids. I think thats funny. Grown people acting like kids. Mark really brings out there childness and i think thats cool. The author probably got sidetracked with his kids if he has any when he was writing this book.
One of the chapters that i really liked was the chapter on page 15 when she meats the tiger because i really like tigers and because she go so close and i thought that was very cool. I really think that eve should have been a little smarter in the beginning though. Adamn too because eve was smarter than him. How can you not tell distance? That just baffled me. Well i think the book was okay but could have been alot better and more interesting.
This book was short and is worth a look. I dont know why they are so dumb but it gave the book comedy so i give ir 3 stars out of 5.

It Gives You The Basics, The Rest Is Up To You
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Gerry and Sue Hardy hae put together a basic guide to fifty hikes in teh State of Connecticut. Its easy to scan through and pick out easy hikes from hard ones as they ordered well. Some basic maps are provided and light overview of the trail.

However, if you want more information, you are based served to research on the Internet. You will discover that some of the Nature Centers are part of other organizations. And these larger organizations offer different and alternate hiking trails. In other words, the book is a bit outdated.

The moral of this review is for you to investigate these trails further as only a basic overview is provided here. Therefore, the three star rating sounds appropriate.

Nice read about the travels of one lucky guy

Travelogue of fly fisherman, artist, author James Prosek who circumnavigates the globe along the 41st parallel fishing and recording rare species of native trout. Prosek writes of wine, women, fishing and fellowship in a casual, loosely structured style...what more could a man want in a quick read? Johannes, his Austrian friend, figures largely in this book because he must--he is a unique character to say the least. At times, however, there is a little too much focus on those around the author, Johannes especially, and too little introspection. Kudos are due to Prosek however for his sensitive and open-minded treatment of the various cultures he is presented with in his travels; Also, for not trying to make some grand declaration of self-discovery. Prosek simply lets this book be what it ought to be.

A perfectly nice book, which should have been a good deal larger, but is currently being sold at 20 per cent off at Borders. Further, the editor, Stan Patey, has already put out a better book in 1996: The Coast of New England: A Pictorial Tour.

Gardenwalks in New England Review

This book is a guide book for touring selected New England gardens. The text gives the address, admission and a description of each of the gardens. No photos (disappointing) in this book.

If you live in or are going to visit New England, a decent guide to gardens based on location.

Interesting story, but it needs some polish

Review Date: 2007-05-09
The overall story line of this book is interesting, especially since parts of it are based on the author's life, but it needs some polish and revision. As I read the book, I noticed many typos, missing words, grammatical errors, etc. In several places the story line was interupted by the author's inclusion of rants on her own political theory and unnecessary details. The book is still worth reading, but with some editing and revision it could be much better.

Very dry for fun reading but great for reports, etc. When I say dry I mean it won't be fun to read just for fun. I used it for a report on the Mashantucket Pequot tribe and although it didn't have anything in partcular on them it had things they may have done or do. I recomend it.

As a Trail guide I think it definately needs more description of the trail and put trail names on the maps. It's nice to go by a map once you are on a trail, but these maps leave out a lot of important trail markers and was very hard to follow. Usually on any given trail there are a lot of loops you can take, nothing was specified on these maps. The description on what is on the trail is pretty nice, but using the maps turned out effortless. You need to concentrate more on the trail so people don't get lost.
