Beautiful illustrations and a sense of wonder about water and its journey kept both my 3 and 6 year olds interested. We live on a river and in the mountains and talk about the production of water and my 6 year old even recognized that the sea was an end point for the rivers.

An adventurous explanation of where water comes from.

An adventurous explanation of where water comes from and where it goes, through the eyes of a young Eskimo boy. It combines science and cultural values. An enjoyable read with illustrations that blend well; the octopus ink used gives a nice touch

Grandma and Grandpa brought this book back for my daughters (5 & 7) from Alaska. The girls are already dog lovers, so this book was just up their alley. They LOVED it. And I loved it too. This true story really demonstrates perseverance and the rewards of hard work. Highly recommend.

A Journey That Continues to Inspire

This is a truly allegorical story, an environmental Moby Dick that continues to define the organization (and perhaps a movement) that was born of this journey. Bob Hunter's intense (and sometimes freakishly funny) style of storytelling enables the reader to better understand the very origin of the philosophy, strategies, and values embodied in Greenpeace (and other similar organizations), a quite unique branch of the global environmental movement. The strategical use of media, the direct and confrontational tactics, the embracement of deep ecology, the mixure of tough internal tensions with a true comaraderie are some of the recurring themes of this legendary sail. Although today's environmental movement is way beyond the 60s, the book still proves to be refreshingly direct and honest in a time when the movement is increasingly becoming a "special interest" and constituency/donor-oriented.

Robert Hunter died May 2nd, 2005, shortly after this book was published. I have every book he ever published; every damn one of them is a trip to read, like you're sitting in a bar with this great storyteller and he cannot stop talking - and you don't want him to! Bob was a great storyteller, and this one about the first-ever Greenpeace voyage (indeed, before there even was a Greenpeace!) is as good as anything he ever wrote. Bob was as alive as any man who walked the earth. An incredibly insightful writer who knew how important "getting the story out" was to the cause. It has been said that without Bob Hunter there never would have been a Greenpeace. I agree totally. He wrote with an intensity and with great humor, but never as an outsider. He was totally engulfed in the great causes of early Greenpeace: the whales and seals, the nuclear testing. And the last book he wrote (2030, written in 2002) was all about global warming, also a great read. Bob will be missed! I was lucky to have met and worked with Bob back in the early Greenpeace days. We shared a sixpack of beer and talked about big-picture ecology, life, love - everything we really care about. That was Bob Hunter. With his passing I rededicate my life to what Bob was all about. A great guy, a great writer. I recommend all his books - most of which you'll have to find used by now. I treasure his books on my shelf much like I treasure my collection of Edward Abbey books. Those two guys go great together. Peace Bob! Godspeed!

A Wonderful Book

Upon first opening this book, one is hit by a wonderful introduction which creates a promising beginning for the book. Unlike many books dealing with bears, this book contains good information and wonderful pictures that dazzle the eye. The ending brings all but the strong hearted to tears, as five years with Little Stony is ended abruptly. For anyone interested in letting their child read a good book about grizzly bears, with both pictures and excellent informational content, this would be the best one. The reader watches the bear grow from just a tiny cub to a large adult with the pictures allowing one to see the stages of development in a natural setting. Rick McIntyre weaves a breath taking story with his written words, letting the reader feel what Rick was feeling when those words were written. This book has truly made me interested in bears, visiting Yellowstone National Park and waiting silently at dawn in hopes that a bear would be spotted on one of the hillsides. Usually, my efforts pay off. This book makes one feel as if Little Stony and his mother were standing right in front of them, so detailed is the story and the pictures. A highly recommend book for anyone interested in seeing good pictures of grizzly bears in the wild and having good writing to accompany it. Buy this book now and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

This book belongs with every preschooler and in every primary classroom! The loveable characters, beautiful illustrations and enticing plot will lure hesitant listeners to attend to every word. The content is educational, yet humorous....it evokes a variety of wondrous emotions. As a speech-language pathologist, I especially loved the rich vocabulary, the variety of sentence structures and its free-flowing prosody. As a parent, I'm thankful for such talented authors!!!!!! Thank you for enchanting my child's world!!!!

Barbara Lavallee illustrates this fun story of a new pet cat who is white as a cloud except for his dark black eyebrows. Girl and cat are fast friends until Groucho wanders away one day, and Kristie must follow animal tracks to get him back. Groucho's Eyebrows is a different, fun story of survival and discovery in the outdoors.

This story is amazing. Ms. McKenzie's characters have dimension and depth, and her storyline keeps you turning the pages. I could not put it down. The tension between Ethan and Charlene started it off, plot twists kept me glued to my chair and the excitement aboard the ship 'sailed' me along. Then there is the sex...well, read it for yourself. WOW! I can't wait for the next one!

Charlene Henderson's brother, Kevin has been missing for eight years and is believed dead. He had been king crab fishing on the Bering Sea. When she gets information that may help her find him, Charlene heads back to Alaska where she'll need the help of Ethan Shannon, the man she left behind when she fled to California after her brother went missing.

The attraction between Ethan and Charlene is as strong as ever, but nothing has changed; Ethan is still a fisherman and Charlene still doesn't want to be with him because of it.

As Ethan and Charlene begin to follow their hearts they are sailing into danger as well.

Heart Of The Storm has suspense, action and a tender romance. There is some back and forth between Charlene and Ethan, but there is an undeniable chemistry between them as well. The twists in the plot keep the story flowing, and the end is a bit of a shocker. Heart Of The Storm is a story where the good guys win and true love stands the test of time.

The author has experienced many paddling adventures all over the West Coast of North America and down into Mexico. A fantastic photographer, Rogers jams this book full of beautiful and inspiring photographs along with interesting narrative. From the pounding surf off the Washington coast to warm, quiet lagoons in the Baja, Rogers takes you along for quite a trip.

I am so bummed that this book is out of print. I read it in the summer of 1995, while houseboating at Lake Powell. Even though I'm not a kayaker, I love being out on the water, and this book really made me want to take up kayaking. The pictures are fabulous, the stories are wonderful! I especially remember the stories about kayaking with the ships off the coast of California, and with the orcas in Alaska. If this book ever comes back into print, I want a copy of it. In the meantime, I guess I'll just keep watching the used book stores!

Excellent, historical account!

This is a beautiful read, that displays the hardships, determination, and stamina of a generation long gone. Few people were cut from this cloth at the turn of the century, and even fewer are today. Sheldon was a close friend, and travel companion, of President Roosevelt. He was an enthusiatic student of nature, and an avid hunter. Though some here would look down on him for hunting, he is the classic example that hunters(including Roosevelt) were responsible for protecting these wild places. Hunting even today, pays the bulk of the monies to protect and preserve America's wild places and wild things. Hunting practices of today are almost nothing like they were at the time this book was written, and this is an important account of how things used to be.

This is an excellent account of the lifestyles and the rugged men that explored this Country. I highly recommend this book to those of us that aren't afraid of the truth. Those with a Disney idea of the World around them, might find this book offensive.

One of the Original Hunter/Conservationists

Review Date: 2003-11-16
Charles Sheldon exemplified the conservation-minded hunter-- and while that may seem a contradiction in terms to some modern readers, Sheldon and his companions were the moving force behind many of our parks and wilderness places. This book details Sheldon's adventures in Alaska hunting bighorn sheep, during which he also gathered museum specimens and came to appreciate the glory of Alaska's landscape. The adventures he had are often told in a self-deprecating way which downplays suspense, but his gentle good humor shines through, and his descriptions of the landscape and its beauty make you feel as if you are seeing them with him. Some readers may feel that the pairing of such aesthetic appreciation with the constant shooting of animals jars-- and in terms of modern nature reading it does!-- but it can also transport us to a time when hunting and wilderness appreciation were inseparably linked for most Americans. Sheldon killed a lot of sheep, but he also was the force behind the creation of Denali National Park-- and perhaps the only voice for keeping (at that time) the Native American names for both Denali and the park, although Congress chose to name it after McKinley. Overall, an interesting hunting narrative & window into past views about wilderness, written by a man with a mild but charming personality-- one of the few big-game hunters you can imagine enjoying going camping with!

Best Guide to Hikes Throughout Alaska
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-12
This is a great book with a great mix of hikes throughout the state. There is good balance of short and long as well as easy and more challenging hikes. It does not try to be exhaustive in its coverage, but gives you enough ideas to occupy your time in any area of the state. It should be useful to either a once in a lifetime tourists or a resident who has an opportunity to hike the different regions of the state.

This was a great book in its first edition, this second edition takes a good design and makes it near perfect. The hike maps are superb, most hikes have elevation profiles, great reviews as well as all the important info you could need - distances, fees, maps, difficulty ratings...

I've read a lot of Alaska hiking books and this one stands out as a state-wide guide for finding hikes to take. It is not the strongest guide to equipment or technique. But if you want a book to give you great suggestions for hikes, pick this one up.

My boyfriend and I purchased this book before our trip to Alaska and it was great. It provided very specific directions to various hikes and accurate descriptions as to the conditions of each trail and their overall difficulty. We only did 3 hikes in this book, but plan on using it when we return to Alaska...hopefully in the next year! The waterproof cover is an added bonus.

Note: The book does NOT cover Denali, other than the few trails around the national park entrance.
