Autobiography and insider's new 'worlds'
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-31
Samir Amin's autobiography is rich in so many ways! It will be a revelation for most readers having so little exposure to the "third" (and "fourth") worlds; to scholarly and development activities of the U.N.: to Africa, Egypt, and France; to Marxist economics; and to the world from any perspective but that of the U.S.

Amin's family includes Egyptian and French parentage and a grandmother who felt Jesus was the first communist in his concerns for the underprivileged. A humane economist, trained in maths and econometrics but understanding through social and historical context, Amin is a refreshingly independent Marxist. (For many Americans labeling and our own form of brainwashing will dismiss rather than engage any such views - our own loss.)

My only complaint would be that there are too many unfamiliar names listed of those with whom Amin worked. That can be easily overlooked because there is also the sometimes fascinating and instructive personal anecdote. A Christian in Egypt, Arab in France, Francophile in Egypt, economist scholar in developmental planning, administrator among scholars, `Westerner' in Senegal and Mali - Amin always manages to be something of an "insider" with connections and understanding that enriches the story.

There is enough here of essential ideas to introduce matters that can be further elaborated by reading the short (112 pages text) "Liberal Virus: Permanent War and the Americanization of the World" and the `intellectual itinerary' "Re-Reading the Postwar Period". Samir Amin has been a creative and important force in Economics far more than any college course here would recognize.

A useful general book on Macintosh Toolbox Programming

I wish I'd picked this book up when 5 years ago instead of off a remainder stand last week. If you need a fast intro to the (now 'unsupported') Mac Toolbox - then this about the best way into it. The basics are all here: events, windows, files, quickdraw, text edit, etc. Unlike MANY other old Mac intro texts, it doesn't just stop after showing some GUI basics but assumes you want to write a real app, that does more than just react to user events. Overall: I found it more readable than Jim Trudeau's intro book (that has something like good coverage) and Dan Parks Sydow who doesn't go far enough in my opinion.

An Excellent Tool

I keep this volume next to my _Mathematica_ and _Standard Add-On Packages_ books. I've used Mathematica since its introduction to make thousands of graphs and figures for publication and communication. Still I can always use as much help making better graphics as I can get. Written by one of the Mathematica team, this book provides an excellent set of tools for everyone from the novice to the experienced user for making even better visual material using Mathematica.

One of the top 10 Mathematica books without a doubt.

This book is a great introduction to the ins and outs of OpenStep programming. Not only does it give solid descriptions for the various technologies within OpenStep, it also manages to give practical insights. Almost all of it will apply to Mac OS X programming, given you use the Cocoa API. The only reason I did not deem it worthy of 5 stars is that it fails to cover WebObjects, which is a very important part of business programming in Mac OS X (I assume that most people who will buy the book at this point will be using the Cocoa API under Mac OS X and not OpenStep).

The awareness of how everything is changing and falling apart creates in me a desire to do something. This book helps me to understand that it needs to start inside and work outward, that it is a coevolutionary opportunity we have to delve into ourselves as the vEmpire falls apart (and the bloodsuckers shrivel up in the sunlight), and to be able to quiet down and remember who I am, who I wish to become, and who I wish to be with along the way.

Thank you.

The definitive introduction to programming for Newton 2.0.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1996-10-08
The first edition of this book led those of us new to Newtonscript by the hand through a sample project. This second edition uses the project approach but is structured in a far more reference-manual manner, emphasizing the concepts over the process.

This edition is Newton 2.0 ONLY, so it won't suit programmers who want to write code for the MessagePad 110, 100, OMP, or ExpertPad. For that, you'll want to track down a copy of the first edition of this book.

The included CD contains a demo of the Newton Toolkit (NTK) programming environment, but there is a newer version of this software on Apple's web site. Note that the demo version creates Newton packages which can't be redistributed, so you'll eventually need to purchase a full copy of NTK.

This book isn't a replacement for the Newton Toolkit documentation, and it doesn't cover much in terms of user interface principles. If you have some background in object oriented programming, this book will put you on the path to writing your own Newtonscript code.

Good book, horrible binding
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-19
Some of the articles are damn good, but the version of the book i have has a very annoying binding, that if you crease the pages start to fall out. I wish the author would have quality checked the publishers work, but i did learn alot from this book. There are alot of good articles that give you a new insight on life. Its definately worth reading even if you aren't a psych major. (I'm not)

Wow! Loads of terrific pointers and advice all in a very easy to read format. I've never seen so many different important topics covered in one place, but it's so easy to find exactly what you want. Takes the place of several books on separate topics. A real time and money saver.

Professor Yeaple gives some advice that can be applied immediately. He advices a person to recruit others to help them in the advancement of his or her career.

He advices you to see yourself as the CEO of your career, to be proactive. One way to obtain knowledge is by consulting with experts in their given area. He's specific in what he recommends and this is a strong point of the book.

Different skills are discussed in detail. He mentions a wide range of necessary skills needed for a successful career, such as computer competency, industry knowledge, managing innovation, analytical skills, among others. His perspective is refreshing and helpful.
