A great first novel

Great first novel by author Fred W. Schott. The real story of adolescent life is not always pretty and the author relates an intriguing story, though fiction is not a stretch from what could be a real life situation. He tastefully weaves in to the novel the work of caring adults, a not-for-profit organization and the church working together to combat the negative influences of gangs and drugs on youth. <br>Once I got into the book I did not want to put it down for fear that I would miss something. Exciting New Author!

I've just read "When Sparrows Fall," a first novel by Omaha Fred Schott. It is one of the best first novels I've ever read, and I read a quite a few. As a Christian who tires of syrupy "Christian" plotlines and dialogue, I found his Christian perspective of real life, including violent street life, extremely refreshing. I especially enjoyed his views of a church with pastors who truly know what it is to "be the church."<br>It is also a delightful change to experience a representation of a terrific organization like Boys and Girls Club and the wonderful, valuable work they do for kids highlighted in quality fiction. This novel is fresh, exciting, and a real page-turner, especially towards the conclusion. When good and evil tangle, the outcome is almost never as obviously cut and dried as it so often seems in fiction. In "When Sparrows Fall," Schott does a truly commendable, real-life job of combining complex characters with difficult situations and making a believable case for Christian faith, good guys, and the opportunity to make a valuable difference in your own community.<br>"When Sparrows Fall" is a great read for Christians and non-Christians alike. Great Book for 1st - 4th grade girls. Cute & Fun!

a VERY FUNNY book

How nice to read a book that isn't about wizards, codes, or fantasy worlds, this is humour pure and simple, every story had me in stitches, and there are twenty four of them, each one funnier than the last. This writer has a rare gift for humour coupled with romance and adventure. In my opinion storytelling at its very best. I shall be buying more copies as presents for my friends. The Lyre Club had stood for ninety years. Its musical connections had long since faded into history as had many of its elderly members. Of course some wag had re-christened it the Liars Club, due to the tradition of telling stories every Friday night. A Beautifully Written Book

When I read Morning Girl by Michael Dorris, I felt I was transported to another place and time. The book tells the story a young girl and her brother who live on a tropical island with their family. These two children grow up a lot over the course of the story, even though the book covers only a fairly short time. <br /> <br />This book has a number of unique features. The chapters alternate between events told by Morning Girl and her brother Star Boy. Morning Girl loves the daytime and Star Boy enjoys the night. So we see events described from two different points of view in a very clever way. <br /> <br />Another thing I really enjoyed about the book was its use of very descriptive language. For example, when Morning Girl is interested in seeing what she looks like, she asks her father, "Why should my own face be a secret from me?" Her father tells her to look carefully into his eyes. She says that she 'leaned forward and stared into the dark brown circles, and it was like diving into the deepest pools.' <br /> <br />There, and throughout the short book, Michael Dorris uses beautiful similes and metaphors to tell of Morning Girl's and Star Boy's adventures. When events such as a hurricane occur on the island, we're given descriptions of the effects of the storm on the island and its people; we're never told directly that there was a storm. By describing these events so vividly, I found their images to be strong and long-lasting. <br /> <br />While reading the book, I was never sure exactly where or when it took place - both these questions are answered in the very surprising ending. <br /> <br />Review by Mr. Taylor. <br />04408335905002008-09-07

A beautiful depiction of culture

But it seems from the reviews that few have read it. What a shame. The prose of Michael Dorris is gentle, lilting and warm. He is not didactic in his lessons, but shares the wisdom of his culture in a subtle way. I love the format of this book; first Morning Girl gives us her point of view, then her brother, Star Boy, offers a different perspective. The chapters alternate between the two young voices. <br /> <br />As with the other children's books by this author, this is a book that is a wonderful read-aloud choice. I also liked it because it was all dated in the 1700's which I was most interested in. It is historical fiction and talks about explorers and what they did and how they treated Indians. This book is a very easy book to read because it <br /> has lots of things going on, not just one specific thing. I was also studying explorers at the time. <br /> <br /> I would recommend this book to somebody who likes stories about the old times and who would enjoy learning about Indian cultures. I rated but a two star because I thought the book was confusing, and it didn't exactly have a main subject.
