If you want a primer on working with fiber-reactive dyes and textile pigments, this is it! This is not a project book. This book gives you the technical know-how to work confidently with fiber-reactive dyes and textile paints. It also demonstrates a number of methods for applying these coloring agents to fabric (natural fiber content). The techniques and processes are described in a clear, concise manner. Every technique is introduced with a short descriptive paragraph and separate equipment and supply lists. The technique is then broken down into numbered steps. Along with the instructions the author includes hint and tip boxes in the outer margins of the pages. . . . and there really is some valuable information in those boxes. Despite the many tip boxes, charts, photos and illustrations, the pages are uncluttered and visually easy to follow. In addition to the instructional text, you'll find many beautiful examples of how other artists applied these techniques to their work. This book is well worth the price.

This book seduces you to get out your sewing machine... you may never have dreamt of sewing books, but once the pictures show you the phantastic, colorful books that are possible, and the clear descriptions convince you you can do it, you can't resist. I bought the book for a friend and then got a copy for myself... I highly recommend it to anyone who combines a love for fabrics and books.

One of my absolute favorites. The first part of the book gives you all the information you need to get started, including techniques, tools, stitches, etc. All well explained, including visuals. Perfect for beginners & advanced crafters alike. The second part is full of gorgeous projects with step-by-step instruction. All are well within the capabilities of any level of crafter, as it is not so much the construction of the books that is inspired, but rather it is what you do to embellish them that is key. And the last part of the book gives you several pages of examples of cloth books made by others. Lots of inspiration on the possibilites of various embellishment techniques there. I am just wild for this book and am itching to get started!

I have to admit, I love books. But I also love fabric, quilting and journal making. This book involves all three. I purchased this particular book based on other reviews and was not disappointed. I haven't made a journal yet, but am planning to as soon as some of my other sewing projects are caught up. My biggest problem? Deciding which book to make and how big it should be!

Let me add my praise to the reveiw list for this beautiful and inspiring book. The photos and colors will jumpstart your creative energies. The projects are wonderful just as illustrated, but I found them to be just the beginning. It's a book full of ideas and techniques that will keep me busy for a long time. I keep this book close by just so I can admire the work illustrated and for the inspiration it provides for my next project.

I almost didn't purchase this book because I have several others on fabric books. Boy, would I have missed out! This books not only has beautiful photography but the examples are unique and the instructions flawless. One of my favorite sections is CHAPTER FOUR: THE GALLERY which shows so many examples of fabric books created by other artists for inspiration. In fact, I was so inspired that I couldn't wait to make a book for a dear friend's birthday using a combination of several different designs. This is not one of those books that you read and then put away. It stays on my studio table and I am already starting my next book. My fabric art library is pretty extensive but this book is by far the best when it comes to creating and embellishing fabric journals and books. I love it!

This is a thorough book and one that I refer to often. It helps to identify many of those pieces you find in your grandmother's china cabinet. There is a lot of information about the various designs, colors and years of production. It's one of the handbooks that I constantly look to for information.

The lack of an index makes this book difficult to use efficiently. The only guide is the table of contents which divides the book by pattern, then color. If you want to look up a particular piece and you don't know the name of the pattern, you will have to look through the entire book to figure it out and hope the piece you have happens to be in this book. Likewise if you don't know the color name of the piece. With Fenton, what you think is pink might actually be called peach. Is what you have light blue, aqua or turquoise? You won't be able to figure it out unless you look at every possibility. If you happen to collect Fenton "Amberina" don't buy this book, there isn't any reference at all to that color.
I find the layout too busy and hard to look out. The black type on green background for the price guide adds to the busy look.
Yes, there are a lot of photos and info but in my opinion, the book really needs to be more well organized for me to call it a good book.

How to Make Enchanting Miniature Teddy Bears by Debbie Kesling is as perfect a book as the tiny teddies she makes. Just as each bear is executed with thought, planning, and skill, so is this book. The text provides not only an excellent guide to the world of miniature bears, their design, and creation, but is a very enjoyable read. The photos are sharp and detailed and give the user an excellent picture of each step in the process. This book is absolutely number one!

Debbie Kesling's book has given me hope that even I could make a miniature teddy bear. After seeing her work up close, I was certain I could never manage the mastery evident in each bear she creates. During the years I taught crafts, I never ran across a more clearly written how-to book, especially with such detailed photographs and a willingness to share secrets to success learned from years of experience. Her book is typical of her work... precise, well-composed and full of substance.

I would and will recommend it to any beginners or woodworkers that want to improve their skill at Intarsia. The 21 patterns are well worth the price of the book. Kathy's designs are bringing intarsia to a new level of art, way beyond the craft stage. It is absolutely the BEST book on Intarsia available in the marketplace today, can't wait for her next book!

I have been doing Intarsia for nearly 10 yrs now. I had ordered a couple of patterns from Kathy in the past. It had been awhile since I had been on Kathy's website and then one day I was looking for new patterns. Wow did her work ever take off to another level. She had just been featured with her animal jungle scene in a wood magazine. I was blown away by that work of art. Well her book had just been published as well, so I had to purchase this book. Whatever tips I could get from this book I knew I needed. I only hope that someday my work can be as good as Kathy's is. Great deal on this book, you get a lot of very cool patterns. Plus all of the tips to go along with it.
Great for any level

Kathy Wise breaks down the sometimes difficult art of intarsia into easy-to-follow steps so that any beginner (with a little knowledge of power tools) can achieve satisfactory results. Each step is explained in detail and there are many photographs in the "Get Started" section that show clearly what to do next to create your own piece of wood art.
Kathy's included patterns range from simple to a level that can be appreciated by any experienced intarsian.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this very intriguing style of woodworking.

I am a beginner calligrapher taking classes, and my instructor is using the Fred Eager method of Italic and cursive writing. Since this book is out of print, I was determined to try and find a used copy, which I did, and I am thrilled to have a copy in my possession. I now don't have to ruin my eyes using bad copies and the book is in really good condition so that I am improving with every class and every homework assignment. A beautiful book and method for those who have an interest in improving their penmanship and producing beautifully written text.

Have you ever been faced with the prospect of making a poster, greeting card, scrapbook -- any creative project that required lettering? All the rest seems like a piece of cake, until you get to the daunting part of adding the words!
Fear no more, budding artists! The answers to all your lettering problems are here in this amazing little book by Klutz. You'll learn how to do different styles of lettering, how to color it, shade it, make it funky and fun!
I can't imagine any kid or adult that wouldn' enjoy having this educational tool on hand. It's sturdily put together with a spiral binding, making it easy to handle while creating your masterpieces. It also includes a set of colored pencils -- quite a bargain! There are 5 pages of stencils, but I believe that you will soon progress beyond using them.

As soon as I got this, I was off and running! This is all you need to create great lettering for anything you want to put headings, titles or labels on.
The letters you make with the five sheets of stencils will be about an inch, an inch and a half tall, so whatever you letter with those is going to be very big. But these are really nice stencils, with rulers on two of them, and special edges on the others, and fun shapes as well as letters, so these are going to be useful even after you finish the book.
There are tips in the book to make these big letters very artistic, so it's customizable. There are also ideas, instructions, and examples of ways you can do neat alphabets freehand.
And you also get four markers, eight double sided colored pencils (which were not that good, really, making this more of a four and a half star rating than a true five), an eraser, a mechanical pencil, and a pencil sharpener, two sheets of sticker paper, and a pack of practice paper.

This is a lovely little book and written in a very charming humorous manner. Every page is packed with clear coloured photos. Each project is easy to follow and there are loads of ideas for adapting the basics so that you can make your own stuff. There are lots of little tips about being on the trail and camping too. I love it.

I went to a local wood hobby shop and looked at several carving/whittling books. This one looked good so I bought it on ebay and saved some $s.
I'm a total novice, so this book was perfect. Full of photographs that explain every step. No previous experience necessary. Tip: I've managed to cut myself a few times so I'm wearing gloves until my technique improves. A very relaxing pastime. Highly recommended. If you are wondering which beginners book to buy then buy this.

My son used his sister's copy of this book and loved it. He asked for it for Christmas and I bought it and received it so quickly, I was impressed. I can't wait to give it to him. It looks very impressive to me, also.

I made myself a miniature drugstore since I am a pharmacist and I had trouble finding things like mortars and cylinders. Thanks to this book I managed to make the most beautiful look-alike mortars with pestles and all, also a little turn-of-the-century (last century, of course) telephone. The directions are precise and you can really get what you are looking for (and I had never touched polymer clay in my life!)
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

This book is so full of good ideas for creating items in perfect scale for a dollhouse that I don't know where to start.
How to make your own tools and formers, making dishes and pots that are more realistically thin-walled than the commercially-available items, mimicking china, a ladies' vanity set, a desk set, baskets, metal, wood, flatware, foods, fireplace tools - even the kitchen sink! Way too many different items to name them all. If I was to be forced to give up all my dollhouse books but one, this would be the one I'd keep.
Excellent intro to using the clays - basic information. Trouble-shooting tips along the way.
And her videos are fabulous, too. :-)
Great book!

Whether you are simply curious about rock painting, or have a desire to paint flowers on rocks, this book is for you. It is well written by a world class rock artist and teacher and in addition to offering know-how, it is an encouraging book that shows the way to get involved in this fascinating and not too expensive art form.

This book was as I expected it to be.. the demonstrations were clear and instructons easy.. I ordered it because of an episode on the Carol Duvall show in which the author painted a beautiful bouquet on a simple smooth rock ..I have ordered other books of the same nature from Amazon before and have been equally satisfied.

It was such a pleasure to receive Lin's book about painting flowers on rocks. I have several of her other books which has brought us lots of hours of fun and fantasy. We appreciate her talents and her sharing her ideas with others like us. Her flower painted rocks are perfect for places like cemeteries that don't allow fresh flowers. It helps bring beauty to our loved ones graves without the work and worry of live plantings. The rocks require "no watering!" Thanks Lin for all your creative ideas.
