Holidays and Special Days Books

I encountered this book first as a library book and was astounded at the quality of the illustrations. The verse is simple but lovely, and perfect for a young child. True, the name "Jesus" does not appear once, but after asking all the stable animals who was born this special night, THE child could only mean The Christ Child. I have loved reading this book on Christmas Eve with my little ones; there are plenty of books that give a more detailed account, but I love this one for the poetry, calm, and simple reverence it lends to our wait that final night.

While browsing through the bookstore with my girls I wanted to see if I could find them a book to read during Advent in order to prepare them for Christmas. I found this book and instantly feel in love with it. The story is sweet with good rhyming patterns that even kept my two year old's attention. I brings out the Christmas Story without swaying to one certain religion. I thought Ms. Bunting did an excellent job helping young children start learning about the birth of Baby Jesus.

After reading the editorial review I ordered this book. I thought it would be a great gift for a 3 1/2 yr old at Christmas time...another book about Christmas with beautiful pictures. WRONG! The book doesn't even mention 'the Christ child'- although the book JACKET does. This book will not 'evoke the true meaning of Christmas' as stated on the jacket. It'll offend anyone who already knows the true meaning. The answer to the question 'who was born this special day' was certainly NOT answered on the last page - 'it was the child'. WHAT child???

We always rely on Frommer's coverage when we travel

The book had very spotty coverage of sights to see in Galway, which is odd since it is the 3rd largest city in Ireland. I didn't know how simple it was to take bus tours to the Burren from Galway until I looked at other books and wasted time trying to figure how to get to the Burren without a car. This book also gave good reviews of sights known to be overrated tourist traps (Bunratty Castle, Books of Kells). Dublin hotel and restaurant listings were lackluster. I have enjoyed using the other Frommers travel books I have bought in the past, which is why I bought this one, but this book is not up to snuff. It's very bulky to boot.

I haven't tried any of the stories yet. But looking over the table of contents I am disappointed in the selection of stories. I thought this was a holiday book. Lots of them are generic. And while April has a story for Arbor Day, it doesn't have Easter. Seems to go a bit more towards obscure holidays. So if that's what you're looking for this probably isn't the one for you.

Just what I needed. If you want to get information on some really far-fetched special days, this is the book for you.

Yet another mostly American holiday book. Lots of info is not quite accurate (ie - Bird Day, April 9 - is actually International Migratory Bird Day and should be on May 10 (according to the National Audubon Society!)) Cute to look up your birthday but otherwise a waste of $$

It's a good reference book, but it lacks a lot of the bizarre or odd days and occasions that are the most amusing.

I bought this book becouse I am not a american, and I wanted to read and learn a little bit of the american holidays and special days. They take up a lot of different hollidays in this book, but they do not get in the deepth. I wich they would write in the beginning wich days are the biggest and that most american are celebrate, and on wich ones the americans are off from work, but they do not, so it is confusing! And I would also wich for a nicer look on the book with lot of nice collored pictures, in this one there are only black and white ones, not fun at all!!

I would recomend you to bye a diffrent book!

Deserves 0 stars probably. This book is inaccurate and an insult to Jews. They spend 4 pages on some holidays, two on others, but mothers day and fathers day get at least two pages, even April fool's day, but Hanukah is reduced to be a one liner at the last sentence of the book and is inaccurate in it's description leaving you to wonder if there are other inaccuracies. Great idea for book for those looking to learn about other cultures and their holidays, someone should write a better one!
