A More Thorough Party Book

Review Date: 1998-09-25
This book is a treasure. Containing wholesome and fun party ideas for gatherings of 4 to 40, the book gives you all the nuts and bolts information on everything from invitations to games to food. That may not seem unusual, but in this book the ideas are not just one-liners; they are complete suggestions. Also useful are party plans labeled "low maintenance" and "family friendly." The party ideas are good for individuals or organizations.

Whether your party is for 4 or 40, this book contains fabulous ideas to keep things hopping. I use this book to help me plan church social events that leave our guests BEGGING for more! The party plans take you through every step of the party - from invitations to goodbyes - and includes suggestions for menus (with recipes) and favors. This may be just the book you're looking for!

I haven't used anything else to prepare my homeschooler but this seemed to cover everything.

I liked this book as a general overall practice for the 4th grade SAT. As a homeschool mom , I need to know what exactly will be on the test so I can help my daughter learn what is expected. This covers all the main subjects and has tests on each subtopic (i.e., science has tests on earth science, solar system, electricity, etc.). It does this for each subject. It also gives test taking tips in each area. This only thing that I would improve is to make the tests more substantial. Each subtopic is only 10 questions. This is a good start but 30 or 40 questions would be awesome.

Great Asset in the classroom
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-17
These books are well put together with everything you need to create the centers. All you need to purchase are some inexpensive folders and some envelopes. I found it time consuming to laminate all the pages and cut them out--but the reward is great--you now have centers that will last and last. If you have time or you have some willing classroom volunteers, you will certainly not regret this purchase.

The literacy skills incorporated into the book are appropriate and useful to enhance your lessons.

A Teacher's Best Friend

This book, and other books in the Take It to Your Seat series is a teacher's best friend. These are quick centers to prepare. They are full color, with center instructions and materials. For many centers, all you need is this book and folders or envelopes. It even has student product sheets for each center. Wonderful for the busy teacher! Great volunteer or assistant project.

Duo is a great game. It can be played by adults with children, children with children & adults only and ALWAYS have fun and excitement. It has educational value because a child must think and speak before making the play. This keeps their minds focused and thinking more than in some other card games they may play. This game is wonderful!

Very challenging for this age!

Review Date: 2008-10-02
Good product, but a little more challenging than I had hoped for. While it's a good idea to present these words to kids at this age (1st-3rd), most of my students can barely read this stuff. We do it as a class, use it in writing, and then I make them use it in a sentence of their own.

Wow! Kids love it!

I teach Resource Reading. My students love doing A Word A Day. They enjoy going through the list of examples of what the word means. When it comes time to share they love to volunteer to show their knowledge of the words!

While a child should learn 3000 new words each year, this book has 350 words for 3 grades. But it sets a platform and methodolgy for further learning.

awful trivia book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-12
This book was jam-packed with both spelling and content errors; i am amazed that a man who considers himself a "Harry Potter authority" managed to misspell 'Ravenclaw' three times. Leading readers to believe that JK Rowling lives in Kensington (she lives in Edinburgh)and that zodiac ends in 'k', it makes me wonder a) if Lawrence pulled all his information off of casual fan sites who had no sources to back up their information, and b) whether anybody bothered to read this book before it was published.
There was some okay trivia, but none of it was incredibly challenging, and some of it was completely and utterly useless: i didn't buy the book to find out exactly how many copies of Order of the Phoenix were sold on the release date, or to find out information about some place that was used as a backdrop for one of the films. My advice: if you are an obsessive Harry Potter fan, like me, and are looking for a good trivia/companion book, DON'T choose this one.

Like others posting reviews, I can not fully enjoy any book that is jam-packed with mistakes. Blatant spelling mistakes repeated several times just chip away at an otherwise interesting compilation of facts about J.K. Rowling and the HP books and movies. The Multiple choice format could possibly be fun for a gathering of HP fans but was sometimes annoying when trying to flip forward and back between the answers. I'm rating it two stars for interesting content but horrible presentation.

A wonderfull mix of the old, new, and little known facts about Harry Potter and his creator, JK Rowling. Some people seem to forget that there is more to the Harry Potter books than paper and words. Someone actually has to WRITE them. This book rightly includes facts about JK Rowling herself along with the books and movies.

This was engaging and, like junk food, hard to put down after only a few pages. A very high degree of difficulty, especially for casual fans, but still fun.

Not a "Must Read"

This book delivered on the trivia exactly as promised but, I agree with the reviewer who is not interested in JK Rowling's midwife and favorite childhood book. HP fans want HP info and I think this book covered too much about the author. If I wanted a biography of JK Rowling I would have bought one. The same thing goes for the number of books published and the kind of paper they were printed on. I'm seeking a book on HP like "The Vampire Companion" published as the official guide to Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles", or like "The Cat Who... Campanion" that have brief plots and character descriptions, maps, and other info on places, themes and symbols contained in the books. If you're looking for the same thing, skip this book

A wonderful handbook for any parent!

This jewel has everything in it on manners and is easy to read with any child. While some may find things a bit old fashioned, good manners are never out of style! Any adult reading this along with a child will take note to address some missing manners in their own world. It is wise to remember that manners are such an asset to any child since we prepare them for most everything else in life! This book makes suggested good manners seem less like mom or dad preaching and more the way of our world. This is a fantastic book for teaching kids manners AND for helping them through tricky situations they may encounter.
I stumbled across this book in the local library and had to buy it because it was packed with information. The kids enjoy the activities and learning 'new' manners.
A must have!

Excellent Comprehensive Guide
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-24
365 Manners Kids Should Know is the best comprehensive guide to children's manners I've found. The calendar entries are arranged under 23 sections, among them "Getting Along With Other Kids," "Table Manners Made Easy," and "Be a Guest and Host." This is a parent's book, meant to be used as a teaching guide, perhaps read to the child one entry per day, though I think it would be more useful to focus on certain sections when approaching an event: "Gifts--Giving and Getting" when attending or hosting a party; "Vacation Time" before taking off somewhere. Practical activities are sprinkled throughout the text, such as helping your child read the movie page in the newspaper, or making a card to celebrate a friend's religious holiday. The tone is cordial but businesslike, with none of the false gaiety so common to books on children's manners. What's more, I found entries I haven't found in other books such as acknowledging another's presence when s/he enters the room; giving compliments; and positive use of humor. The writer runs her own company presenting manners instruction seminars to children, young adults, and businesspeople. Her instructions show empathy for all parties involved, for the "others" with whom the child will be associating, and for the child himself.
