Although my son is now 15, I still enjoy looking at and reading children's books. This one is full of fun,the illustrations are very colorful and it tells a story to which many parents can relate. The storyline is easy to follow and keeps the reader or listener interested whether they are 4 or 40. I can see this becoming a child's favorite book and who knows, maybe even a daddy's favorite one too.

Days of the Blackbird was a cool book

Days of the Black Bird is one of Tomie de Paola's children books. There are birds in this book. The birds make nice noise in this book. But they go away in the winter and they come back in the spring. The girl in this book tries to keep one of the birds so she will always hear nice music. She makes a nest to comfort the bird. My favorite part is when the white bird goes in the chimney. When the white comes to sing he is covered in soot and looks funny. I would recommend this book to children in the K2 and the 5th grade because it's appropriate and if your learning about Tomie de Paoloa then this would be a good book. This is just one of Tomie de Paola's books. If you want to read more of his books just go to the library.

There are three main characters in this book; Duca Gennaro, Gemma, La Colombia. Duca Gennero is a duke who has a huge house in the middle of the town. He lived alone with his daughter Gemma. He would let anyone in the town come into his house for anything they needed because Duca Gennaro was a kind and wise man. He was also known for his good advice that would bring people in. Everyday, he would ask Gemma how her day was and what she learned. They would go into the courtyard and listen to the birds sing. Gemma's favorite bird was a pure white one, that she named La Colombia.
Then the winter came and the birds flew away to somewhere warm. Duca Gennaro always would reassure Gemma that Spring would be here soon. Then Spring came again and Gemma and her father listened to the birds sing. Duca Gennaro got sick after one hot summer, a year later. He would ask Gemma to open the window, so he could hear the birds sing. Soon the winter came, and the birds were ready to leave. Gemma made them baskets to live in and feed them too, so they would stay tho sing to her dad.
Christmas came and all the children it the town came to Duca Gennaro's house to get a Christmas present. All the birds flew away because it was too cold. La Colombia was the only one that stayed there. The Duke was still sick. His friends knew that he loved the music from the birds, so they decided to play some music for him. The Duke wasn't happy because he wanted to hear the birds sing. It got even colder outside, but La Colombia still stayed. La Colombia flew up to the chimney to make a nest for himself.
Will Duca Gennaro get better? Will Spring ever come? What will happen to La Colombia? Read the book to find the answers to these questions.
I really enjoyed this book because I think that Tomie de Paola is a great author and illustrator. He writes books that the whole family can enjoy!

Folklore of Italy
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-11
This is a somewhat unusual book because it may appeal to two age groups: Toddlers and Pre-Adolescents. The former will like the big colorful pictures and happy ending; the latter may appreciate the references to Italian culture and folklore. The plot and conclusion may be somewhat boring to children between these ages, and the very ill father may upset some toddlers. Still, very young children may enjoy the human-animal interaction and the happy denouement.

A well-loved father becomes very sick; bird song seems to cheer him. Most of the birds leave as winter comes, save for one white one who continues to sing. This bird climbs up in a chimney stack to stay warm and keep the father's spirits up through his eventual recovery. Nicely illustrated, with big, "folkish" drawings effectively highlighting an Italian village.

A great read just in time for summer

I bought this book being told it would be great even if I wasn't a sports fan. I am told Jim is very funny. After reading this book I realize both are true.
I am not much of a sports fan, but his writing is very engaging and entertaing in the same way Anthony Bourdaine(Kitchen Confidential) and David Searis(Me Talk Pretty One Day) are. He is also the same type of as humor as they are more akin to Bourdaine than Sedaris. I must admit to laughing out loud through every section of the book.
As for not being a sports fan he does a great job at bring you to the experience with his observatioons and gives the reader enough backgroud to get a good sense of the "experience". He keeps himself relatable to both sports fans and non sports fans alike with a great balance of passion and knowledge.
From his time with the people he meets in Daytona to the craziness of the Superbowl it seems he finds somthing that goes beyond just sports. He manages to find and look for a sort of good quality and in fans that is more human and less alienating than I would expect. He is introspective enough really breath in the experience. It's the perfect summer read and just in time for Fathers Day
(My dad is a sports fan)....I could recomend this to just about anyone!

Excellent Read About Picasso Family and Heirs

Finally, a book about Picasso that tells a coherent biographical history and backs up information with references, and all by a family member who evidently did his research (the son of Maya, Marie-Therese's daughter).

The author never knew his grandfather so he had to do his research in order to write such a consice history. My favorite read on Picasso is still Francoise Gilot's "Life with Picasso" but this one is a close second. The Real Family Story is an excellent read on the artist's myriad families and the heirs of Picasso, though none of the other books by family members can be discounted.

The only real slant is that Olivier Widmaier Picasso appears to be closer to the Francoise side of the family than the Olga side of the family (which may be an understatement) but in such an expansive family there are naturally divides.

Importantly, delves into the troublesome estate matters left behind by Picasso, which all heirs seemed to have benefitted after a lot of legal process.

Throughout the ages, poets and philosophers have extolled the virtues of womanhood and motherhood. Pablo Picasso is quoted: "My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.

Finally, a biography about Picasso written by a family member (his grandson by Marie-Therese Walter)that puts right all the ogre mythology. Yes, Picasso was not an ideal family man. But so much written about him in other biographies deem him almost inhuman. This bio is good because it puts all the facts out there. Good and bad. Widmaier refutes many of the "evil man myths" and gives you a straight view of what the man was really made of. I felt after reading this, a real grasp on this man/legend. A good job, that maybe his Grandfather would have appreciated, even though he was such a private person.

This collection of poetry has it all. It is uplifting, spiritual, haunting and full of beautiful pieces of poetry. The book features
love poems, angel poems, war poetry, poetry about nature, about animals and is set out in 4 sections (the seasons) Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter.

The author is very clever in the way the book is formatted. It opens with the Spring section and all the poetry is about rebirth, trees, sunshine, love, angels, prayers and continues right through the book following the seasons. Winter brings in a few war poems, christmas, yuletime, new years day, poems for people who have passed on, lovely poetry right through the entire book.

As it says "a lovely poetry collection for ardent poetry lovers and a bonus to any poetry collection". I was not disappointed and I return to it again and again. Such essence of beauty and truth.

Men of Character is a book that I bought for my son at his request. However, I too read it! I am a woman and I find the encouragements of this devotional to be exceptional. Each segment tells me about a particular man of God and his challenges. The segments ask thought provoking questions. Each segment takes but a few minutes to read, and I walk away each time with a new encouragement and perspective that I apply to my own life. I think this book would be a wonderful resource to men but I find it rich for me personally too. I have ordered this devotional for my nephew and for a female friend of mine. It is inspired and insightful!

Beautiful book, perhaps best for slightly older kids
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-01
This book isn't just for children, it's for grown ups too. Without mentioning divorce or separation explicitly, the book shows how parent and child move from the disappointment of losing the dream of a bright happy family, through a hard journey battling harsh conditions, finding small pleasures and patches of beauty, and coming through to a better time, where parent and child can feel their togetherness and love for each other. All this is expressed in the simple but symbolic story described in the official reviews above, with images perfectly suited to the depth of the tale.

When I opened the parcel from amazon and read this book, alone at first, I cried at the simple strength of the story. It is honest about how hard things are and lent me strength in it's final optimism: Rainy days don't last forever. All this without any of that sometimes too moralistic social realism of books for kids about divorce.

But - and this is a pretty big but - my then 4 y.o. daughter was completely uninterested in the book. She refused to let me read it to her more than once, and tells me it's BORING. Now, at five, she's moderately interested but only rarely wants to read it. Perhaps this is because the situation described is different from her own, she spends a week with each parent so isn't in the situation of the little boy in this story. Or perhaps the story is too simple and everyday, and the double meanings too subtle for a child. Perhaps the book would actually be better suited to an older child than to the traditional picture book audience?

A picture book my daughter and I have both enjoyed a lot is Babette Cole's "Two of Everything", which has a very direct and humourous yet real approach to children's parents separating. Despite my daughter's boredom with this book, I find books like these invaluable in helping me and my daughter come to terms with our new life. I wish there were more quality books for young children dealing with divorce and separation.

Changing Family

Emma Haughton has taken a very difficult subject and demonstrated a great deal of love and caring in her story. She shows that just because the people are changing, they can still have the true love for a person, as they always had in the past. This is a story that every child should hear. Whether it is their circumstance or that of a friend, this book shows that change doesn't have to mean loss. It can in fact build a stronger realationship. Read and enjoy, and maybe even learn from this story.

Hilarious Use of Flaps for the 2-4 Year Old Set
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-31
This book is built around a running gag while two children, James and Sarah, put together a surprise Father's Day present on the day before the grand event. The children decide to collect tokens of ways they can help their father. The only trouble is that they take these tokens away . . . just as their father is about to use the items. As a result, the house and yard are filled with unexpected messes and there's a puzzled father. The pages show the father about to use the hose, tub, trowel, window cleaner, or charcoal . . . and under the flaps a different illustration shows the father taking a pratfall or having an accident when the item disappears or is replaced by something inappropriate (like a dog's stick for a trowel).

On Father's Day, dad opens the door to the parent's bedroom to find a large box in the hallway with a sign on it that says, "For Daddy, open me right away!"

Inside the box are Sarah and James. Also inside are a trowel (with a sign attached that says "free garden weeding"), a hose (with a sign that says "free car wash"), a tub ("free doggy bath"), a bottle of window cleaner ("free window washing"), and charcoal ("free help with barbecue"). The mystery is solved.

"Daddy said, 'I love all your presents, but most of all, I love you!'"

You will enjoy the bright, solid colors portraying simple images of happy situations.

Although the book is very funny, the children are certainly not very considerate or helpful. They don't ask permission, and they can tell that their removals and replacements will cause problems. As a result, the children waste a lot of their father's time. Fortunately, these acts affect his love for them not one bit! I think the book could have been written to overcome this limitation of seeming to promote mischevious behavior (as long as it is in a good cause) and still be very funny. So I graded the book down one star accordingly.

Appreciating your father doesn't have to begin and end on Father's Day. How can you be helpful to your father on other days as well?

Happy Father's Day!

Although the reading level indicated is 4-8 years old, I bought this book to my 2 years old daughter and she loved it. She always smiles when she lifts the flaps and see the reactions of a astonished father who never undestands the strange behavior of his two children. But the most important: the story rescues fundamental values and the real mean of a father's day present or a father's present in any day.
