Days of the Blackbird was a cool bookReview Date: 2001-02-28
Days of the Blackbird written by Tomie de PaolaReview Date: 2003-03-09
Then the winter came and the birds flew away to somewhere warm. Duca Gennaro always would reassure Gemma that Spring would be here soon. Then Spring came again and Gemma and her father listened to the birds sing. Duca Gennaro got sick after one hot summer, a year later. He would ask Gemma to open the window, so he could hear the birds sing. Soon the winter came, and the birds were ready to leave. Gemma made them baskets to live in and feed them too, so they would stay tho sing to her dad.
Christmas came and all the children it the town came to Duca Gennaro's house to get a Christmas present. All the birds flew away because it was too cold. La Colombia was the only one that stayed there. The Duke was still sick. His friends knew that he loved the music from the birds, so they decided to play some music for him. The Duke wasn't happy because he wanted to hear the birds sing. It got even colder outside, but La Colombia still stayed. La Colombia flew up to the chimney to make a nest for himself.
Will Duca Gennaro get better? Will Spring ever come? What will happen to La Colombia? Read the book to find the answers to these questions.
I really enjoyed this book because I think that Tomie de Paola is a great author and illustrator. He writes books that the whole family can enjoy!
Folklore of ItalyReview Date: 2000-08-11
A well-loved father becomes very sick; bird song seems to cheer him. Most of the birds leave as winter comes, save for one white one who continues to sing. This bird climbs up in a chimney stack to stay warm and keep the father's spirits up through his eventual recovery. Nicely illustrated, with big, "folkish" drawings effectively highlighting an Italian village.

A great read just in time for summerReview Date: 2007-06-07
I am not much of a sports fan, but his writing is very engaging and entertaing in the same way Anthony Bourdaine(Kitchen Confidential) and David Searis(Me Talk Pretty One Day) are. He is also the same type of as humor as they are more akin to Bourdaine than Sedaris. I must admit to laughing out loud through every section of the book.
As for not being a sports fan he does a great job at bring you to the experience with his observatioons and gives the reader enough backgroud to get a good sense of the "experience". He keeps himself relatable to both sports fans and non sports fans alike with a great balance of passion and knowledge.
From his time with the people he meets in Daytona to the craziness of the Superbowl it seems he finds somthing that goes beyond just sports. He manages to find and look for a sort of good quality and in fans that is more human and less alienating than I would expect. He is introspective enough really breath in the experience. It's the perfect summer read and just in time for Fathers Day
(My dad is a sports fan)....I could recomend this to just about anyone!

Excellent Read About Picasso Family and HeirsReview Date: 2006-10-01
The author never knew his grandfather so he had to do his research in order to write such a consice history. My favorite read on Picasso is still Francoise Gilot's "Life with Picasso" but this one is a close second. The Real Family Story is an excellent read on the artist's myriad families and the heirs of Picasso, though none of the other books by family members can be discounted.
The only real slant is that Olivier Widmaier Picasso appears to be closer to the Francoise side of the family than the Olga side of the family (which may be an understatement) but in such an expansive family there are naturally divides.
Importantly, delves into the troublesome estate matters left behind by Picasso, which all heirs seemed to have benefitted after a lot of legal process.

Spiritual Whispers by Rochelle MooreReview Date: 2007-03-21
love poems, angel poems, war poetry, poetry about nature, about animals and is set out in 4 sections (the seasons) Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter.
The author is very clever in the way the book is formatted. It opens with the Spring section and all the poetry is about rebirth, trees, sunshine, love, angels, prayers and continues right through the book following the seasons. Winter brings in a few war poems, christmas, yuletime, new years day, poems for people who have passed on, lovely poetry right through the entire book.
As it says "a lovely poetry collection for ardent poetry lovers and a bonus to any poetry collection". I was not disappointed and I return to it again and again. Such essence of beauty and truth.

Beautiful book, perhaps best for slightly older kidsReview Date: 2001-10-01
When I opened the parcel from amazon and read this book, alone at first, I cried at the simple strength of the story. It is honest about how hard things are and lent me strength in it's final optimism: Rainy days don't last forever. All this without any of that sometimes too moralistic social realism of books for kids about divorce.
But - and this is a pretty big but - my then 4 y.o. daughter was completely uninterested in the book. She refused to let me read it to her more than once, and tells me it's BORING. Now, at five, she's moderately interested but only rarely wants to read it. Perhaps this is because the situation described is different from her own, she spends a week with each parent so isn't in the situation of the little boy in this story. Or perhaps the story is too simple and everyday, and the double meanings too subtle for a child. Perhaps the book would actually be better suited to an older child than to the traditional picture book audience?
A picture book my daughter and I have both enjoyed a lot is Babette Cole's "Two of Everything", which has a very direct and humourous yet real approach to children's parents separating. Despite my daughter's boredom with this book, I find books like these invaluable in helping me and my daughter come to terms with our new life. I wish there were more quality books for young children dealing with divorce and separation.

Hilarious Use of Flaps for the 2-4 Year Old SetReview Date: 2001-05-31
On Father's Day, dad opens the door to the parent's bedroom to find a large box in the hallway with a sign on it that says, "For Daddy, open me right away!"
Inside the box are Sarah and James. Also inside are a trowel (with a sign attached that says "free garden weeding"), a hose (with a sign that says "free car wash"), a tub ("free doggy bath"), a bottle of window cleaner ("free window washing"), and charcoal ("free help with barbecue"). The mystery is solved.
"Daddy said, 'I love all your presents, but most of all, I love you!'"
You will enjoy the bright, solid colors portraying simple images of happy situations.
Although the book is very funny, the children are certainly not very considerate or helpful. They don't ask permission, and they can tell that their removals and replacements will cause problems. As a result, the children waste a lot of their father's time. Fortunately, these acts affect his love for them not one bit! I think the book could have been written to overcome this limitation of seeming to promote mischevious behavior (as long as it is in a good cause) and still be very funny. So I graded the book down one star accordingly.
Appreciating your father doesn't have to begin and end on Father's Day. How can you be helpful to your father on other days as well?
Happy Father's Day!
