"The Art of the Boot" is informative, interesting and fun to read. The photos are outstanding. This is another outstanding book from this duo. I had the good fortune to recently meet Tyler and his lovely wife, Theresa, when they visited our shop. I can honestly state that I have never met a more interesting guy! Anyone interested in wearing, knowing about or just looking at boots will love this great book. AND it looks so cool on the coffee table!

"The Art of the Frame" is a wonderfully presented and delightful book. This high quality volume will make a fine addition to your library. Its treatment of the Arts and Crafts period (of which I am quite fond) is highly satisfying as I learned a great deal about picture frames from that point in history. Highly recommended.

The Art of the Frame is a petite book about the American frames during the Arts and Crafts period that packs a large punch. The book not only provides information on the history of the frames but also on the master frame makers themselves. It invites you to learn about what influenced styles & techniques while also providing insight on the relationships the framers developed with the artists of their day. Beautiful illustrations and spot-on length, this book is a wonderful enhancement for any frame lover's growing library.

"There was a time when the sun never set on the British Empire. From Ceylon to the Americas, England ruled, bringing her lifestyle to Crown colonies around the globe.

Being stationed in India or Egypt, however, was no excuse to relax the standards of living to which British Army officers were accustomed. Living 'under canvas' did not mean roughing it. Instead, they brought their homes with them, packing cunningly constructed, portable furniture suitable for any elegant tented dinner.

Today, campaign furniture's elegance and simplicity have made it a must-have item for decorators and antique lovers. Nicholas Brawer's new book British Campaign Furniture: Elegance Under Canvas (Abrams) provides a fascinating history and a guide to collapsible decor."

This is an excellent review of British Campain Furniture.

Each piece is photographed in colour and/or Black & White, discussed and given brief measurements. The "disembled" photos are of great use to anyone who wishes to reconstruct any of the items from the book, as well as satisfying the just plain curious. Some of the gadgets are fantastic.

Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the author is limited by the pieces that he can access within a year or two. I know there were 'Campaign' folding rocking chairs, and I an certain that there are other examples of furniture, with other systems of assembly ( Louis Vouton made a folding-bed-in-a-trunk for the Brazza Expedition in Africa in the late 1800's which survives - there is a single picture in 'Treasure Chests').

I can only hope that the author will be encouraged to keep looking & photographing, and that we may see a second volume in years to come.

Sorry Amazon, you just don't have enough stars........

"If you were a British officer during the 18th or 19th century, your home had the look of a proper English residence, with desks, chairs, sofas, chests and fancy bedroom suites--even if you lived in a tent.

'The only real difference between fine household furniture and its campaign counterpart was that the latter could be quickly folded up, packed away in boxes, transported, and--without the use of nails, tacks or tools--reassembled...,' Nicholas A. Brawer writes in British Campaign Furniture.

How the furniture can be taken apart and stored is fascinating. One dining table and set of four padded chairs and a chaise lounge can be broken down into pieces that fit into two small crates.

There are pictures of the furnishings set up and stored. Often officers lived better overseas than at home. One cartoon depicts a British officer and his wife dining in their home overseas, with a half-dozen servants waiting on them, and then dining at home after retirement, with only one housekeeper.

Nearly half the book is a portfolio of the furnishings and detailed descriptions of manufacturers and furniture makers."

This book is a must have for anyone interested in English antiques, social, military, or naval history. I have never seen another book on this subject and it is filled with very interesting "before" and "after" photographs of dozens and dozens of pieces of campaign furniture "assembled" and "disassembled." I imagine this book has been a great hit in London.

A lovely book with usable projects

An entirely usable book, with enough projects to get you started in knotting but not so many as to be overwhelming. The illustrations are clear and, as far as I can tell, complete. I tried a couple of button knots to get the hang of it and then made a Celtic cross necklace with button knots and slider knots as my first project. (It wasn't quick, but it all worked!)

I recommend starting with nylon (not rayon) rattail. (I have found satincord.com to be a reliable supplier.) Nylon is prettier than it sounds, and it's easier to handle. If you prefer rayon rattail or silk cord, you can move on to using them after your fingers are adept at holding the loops.

A previous reviewer mentions using a large pin to move button knots to a desired position; I agree with this method. Just tie a few for practice and to understand the structure, and then you can learn to position them.

Knotted jewelry is perfect for large beads, pendants, and odd jewelry findings you may not find another good use for. I am going to make knotted keepsakes for my family from the beads in my late aunt's costume jewelry box.

This is a lovely book and the small number of projects is not a limitation; it's easy to see how to combine the techniques to make many more styles. I am ordering the same author's "Chinese Knots" today.

I have Suzen Millodot's Chinese Knots for Beaded Jewellery book and wondered whether this Celtic book would overlap too much with that publication. It does not. The basic explanation of knotting supplies and techniques are quite similar in the two books, but the knots (with the exception of the button knot) are unique within each book. I recommend buying both of these lovely books. I have made some jewelry creations that use knots from both books (in one piece) and they complement each other beautifully. The pictures are gorgeous and the drawings very helpful in figuring out how to formulate the knots. I am very pleased to have these books in my library.

This book is exactly what I hoped to find. It is filled with beautifully illustrated quilts & embroidery with step by step details on design, construction and how it was embroidered. Sandra has detailed her quilt design process giving the reader a clearly demonstrated understanding visually & textually of what inspires her quilts and then firstly how she gets them out of her head and onto paper & then translated into a quilt. Sandras use of sumptuous fabrics showing us how fabrics are combined, moved around and translated into images is wonderful. The embroidery is textual & three dimensional and the magic is nothing you see seems unachievable. Highly recommended for teachers, students and anyone wanting to take their quilt making to a new level.

This book is not about how to digitize as much as it is about expanding your information about what is possible with digitizing. Mr. Deer has a great deal of knowledge that he share with you. Only a few of the included designs are really good ones. His goal is to encourage you to bravely try digitizing on your own. I was introduced to a few new techniques which were explained well. IF you struggle to understanding why embroidery designs resized in your software program did not sew out right--this basic book is for you. If you already know the terms PUSH & PULL and concept of compensation...then probably too basic. For me, embroidery is new hobby. I purchased the 4D software and only afterwards realized it assumed a knowledge base beyond what I had to make my investment worthwhile. This book is useful beginner resource and very easy to understand. Accompanying CD is designed to sell more of his product. He demos his instructional CD as well...so recommendation might be to look into that first if you prefer that as learning method.

This is a very complex book covering some unconventional ceramic techniques and styles of application for this medium. Lots of information in here that I haven't seen in other books. TONS of beautiful color photos showing various artists' works and a variety of installations, from ornimental to architectural. General basic information on clay formation, glazing formulas, slip-casting, mold relief, kiln operation and firing techniques is included as well. Several illustrative projects included for those who would like to try to replicate some of the design processes described.
Anyone interested in clay as an art form would definitely enjoy this book!

I knew absolutely nothing about the world of art. Because i love to read books. My interest in this particular book was only that the author was Thomas Hoving. I didnt know him much less heard of him. I was just a simple house painter from Texas living in NYC. I ended up in the Hoving home as a painter when in moving things around i noticed several books. The one book that caught my eye was the King of the Confessors, since i studied scripture i was naturally curious. I was shy to ask him for a copy so i asked his lovely wife Nancy. She took one of many copies and just gave as a gift. I was so hooked! Mr. Hoving eventually signed my copy, but would never give away any secrets in the book. I asked but he never spoke on this subject. Ive been waiting patiencenly for the movie! I was so pleased to find that a second book is being or is written on this same subject, so im waiting for this one too. Ive read several other books and seen other movies on this type of material but nothing even comes close to this great book. I know by opinion is biased but not really! I lost my original copy in a flood accident. Maybe someday i can get another one signed by the master author himself!

I read this book when it first came out in 1981 and recommended it to everybody I knew. I loved this book. It had elements of mystery and intrigue in the world of art and at the time, it was the most exciting non-fiction read of my life. 25 years later, it still resonates with me like no other book of the time, except perhaps Umberto Ecco's "The Name of the Rose."
A must read for anybody who loves art and suspense. More recent stories of the search for a work of art pale in comparison.

This book is not for everyone, but if you like a good mystery story, where the heroes, villains, and bit players just happen to be real, historic people, this is for you ! Hoving is a great writer, who knows how to take a fairly simple story and lead you through all the twists and turns of byways, blind alleys, false hopes, and triumphs. You are with him every step of the way. A great vacation book, 330 pages on non-stop action.

I read this book when it came out many years ago and my copy has been read and re-read many times over the years. It's a great non fiction book about an ivory cross that the former director of the Met found and pursued and finally purchased, after many setbacks and frustrations along the way. It brings you into the world of art, history, museums and museum directors and brings it all to life.
After I read it, I made sure I visited the Cloisters the next time I was in New York City to see the actual cross.
You mustn't miss both book and Cross!

.... So, if you need a piece of U.S.A pottery identified, then this book probably has the mark. (Please note that this book is not about finding markings of European pieces. As stated on the cover, this book is strictly about U.S. marks).

P.S.: This book also includes all the U.S. RESTAURANT-WARE markings. Very helpful if you collect "RESTAURANT-WARE", along with other American pottery and china.

This book is prodigious in scope: the pottery marks (with huge varieties within each company) and historical information are both invaluable and interesting. However, the indexing is weak, which leads one to thumbing through pages trying to find an elusive mark. This is such a well-researched, vast collection of marks, however, that laborious searches are rewarded.

A Very informative book.
