I didn't look forward to reading this book, because I thought it was going to be just another sports fiction. I couldn't
have been more wrong. Seth Pender, 12, is angry and depressed at spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair after a car
accident that took away his normal life and his athletic ability. His family, friends, and therapist can't find the key to
break through his abusive, withdrawn behavior. But then one day, Seth sees a boy playing wheelchair basketball. After initially
making snide comments about it not being "real" basketball, Seth goes to a game with his friend and sister. He is totally
impressed with the strength, agility, and spirit of the players. Seth works out to build his upper body, and joins a team.
Not all is smooth. He almost quits because of a tough coach, but he finally understands that independence, and peak performance
are why the coach is pushing him. Though the plot sometimes seems too perfect, I can see the same sensitivity, misunderstanding,
and moodiness happening in many middle schoolers. The interactions of Seth and his therapist will enlighten readers as to
the reasons for some of their own problems. Interesting details about special sports wheelchairs are included. The best
thing is that readers can't help but gain a new understanding and respect for an incredible sport. I certainly did.

This story hits you in the face at the beginning with a boy who has lost the use of his legs in an accident. Seth is angry
at everybody for his horrible loss until his sister persuades him to go watch a wheelchair basketball game. Seth is enthralled,
and convinced that finally he can be an athlete again. But his journey in wheelchair basketball isn't an easy one. Matt
Christopher chronicles the hard work and struggles that athletes face in training and the incredible possibility that Seth
may just be able to feel like a winner again. Bravo! Matt Christopher - AWESOME!

I enjoy all of Matt Christopher's books especially his "Sport Bio" ones. I checked out this grand book at the public libary.
"At The Plate With Mark McGwire" is a great book because it's all the way Matt Christopher writes, the way he wrote this
book was especially GREAT. The way Matt Christopher wrote when McGwire was little to when he was a slugger, when he "stunk",
and much more.I really hope people of all ages read about such a star.

Great selection for any young (or not so young} sports fan! Get them away from the video games and get them reading. Our
11 year old fan was fully engrossed in these books. Life lessons are learned in each one, fun to read and we loved hearing
"Can I just read 1 more chapter ?".

This book was cool because it shows you what happens when your a bully. Like, Sandy and the other kids made a fire in that
little place. The end was neat because he caught a ball that almost was a homerun.

It was one of the best books I've read. It was so good, that I read it in almost 5 or 6 hours. I recently took a standardized
test, and in my extra time, I read the book, and never wanted to put it down. It is basically about basketball, and life.
It is about a boy, named kim, who plays basketball and sings in a choir. In the book, you learn about what kind of coices
he makes, being a singer, and a basketball player. I recomend this book to every one. It is an excellent book, and I would
really like to read it again. It was that good!!!!!!!!
