Each monster illustrated in this book has a distinctive face that really captures its personality. The layout is unique and the story is fun to read. The onomatopoeia on the last few pages make the end really special. Catch this at the bargain price while you can.

This book was used by my daughter who is six years old and dyslexic. It was wonderful as the stories are short and sweet. The words are mostly the dolch words, therefore easier to read for children with learning disabilities. It was a positive experience for mom and child!!!

I found a chile therapist who recommended this book to me. It was a good book, but my children were not interested in it. They would rather talk to me and as me questions, so that what we did. I read it, and it was helpful in terms of coming up with helpful language to talk to the kids about something difficult.

What a great book

I am a nanny working for divorced family. I found the 8-year old reading the book, I was interested so I read the whole book and I was so impressed I got it for my kids too. Not that I am planing on divorce but the kids have so many friends coming from divorced families and this could help them understand situation they are going through. I think the book explains very sensitively whole process of divorce and life after divorce, new partners of parents and step-siblings included. I find the book very needed and helpful. There's plenty of literature for parents going through this hard part of their life and now this is finally something for the little ones. They deserved it.

This book is good for parents and kids living in a divorce situation. The parents part give suggestions for dealing with what the kids are going through. This is a handy reference book, in an easy read way.

My son was 3 1/2 when I first started to read this book to him, because he started to want to know why his Mommy and Daddy didn't live together, even though it's all he's really ever known since he turned a year old.

This book has a lot of scenarios and you can read the sections that apply to your current situation. I think this book would be better for a child who is 6+.

In one section, the daughter dinasour is trying to figure out her emotions and becomes frustrated. The illustration has puffs of red clouds about her head. My son refers to it as "The red puffy stuff" and is always concerned about the girl and her feelings. It bothers him that she has the "red puffy stuff" about her head.

As we were going through his toys that he wanted to donate, when he came across this book, he looked at it and said, "That puffy stuff is bad" and put it in the "to donate" box.

Even though this book was written by a man and a woman, I felt that some of the scenarios leaned on the mother, as being the "bad guy", or trying to buy-off the kids too much.

I am a nurse, currently not working, but this book put me right back in the ER. This book makes you laugh out loud, makes you cry and and actually shows you what really happens in the ER, be it in a large hospital or in a small rural one.

I bought this book origanally because my husband works as a charge nurse in the ER with Dr Mark Brown (the Author) I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I was not dissapointed! The moment I started reading I never put it down. There were so many stories. I couldnt help myself, I read it from beggining to end without stopping! I myself, am in nursing school, after reading this book I have decided the ER is where I need to be. I found myself laughing out loud, tearing up and praying for a good ending... sometimes all in the same story. I recommend this book to anyone interestead in the true stories of the ER, and anyone wanting to know more about the differnt world in which Doctors, Nurses and Techs subject themselves to daily. Keep a box of Kleenex nearby for both happy and unhappy tears. I can't wait for Vol 2!!!

Mark Brown has collected ER stories from folks around the country. During my first ER clinical I pulled the legs apart on a woman with a broken hip so that a catheter might be inserted, I listened to the ER head med complain that it was Saturday morning and you did not start the day with an MI, I listened to the PA joke about a patient with "fibro-myassia", and I watched the chief doc stonewall a patient because the patient seemed to think that his (the patient's) pain was all that mattered. No one ever died from pain, he said. Okay, think about it.

Mark Brown would not have used one of my stories in his book. What he writes about is more outstanding. ER is the sadly tragic interspersed with the joyful or lovely. A vagabond who insists that she once attended Julliard returns with her violin and plays four hours of glorious music without repeting a note. On another night in another town, ER gets to deal with an unconscious male who had been playing sex games with his bound wife. When the husband knocked himself out, all the bound wife could do is hollar until the firemen broke in.

I can hear Captain Picard from Star Trek issuing the command to "Make it so." Gosh, I wish that the ER was the place to make it so. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's the ER staff that survives.

TOP SECRET
Hi my name is London. I am reading Top Secret by John Reyndds. The reason I picked this book is because it's funny when he turns green. It's also sad because his teacher Miss. Green told him to do a project on lipstick. He got mad, so he went to his room and thought to do something else for a science project. It was human photosynthesis!

My connections to this book are when he had a secret about a science project. For instance, my mom says not to shoot my gun, but I still do it. I recommend this book to my family because it's funny and interesting.

Reading to your children at a young age teaches children valuable reading skills (especially if you ask the right questions to make them think) and to love reading. This is a great book. Buy this along with my other two favorites:Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Success andThe Big Squeal: A Wild, True, and Twisted Tail. Young children will love the stories and the invaluable teaching guides make them must-have books for every parent and teacher bookshelf.

I gave this book and 2 others to my 6 1/2 year old niece for Christmas. She started reading the book Christmas day and asked for book marks to mark her favorite poems so she can take the book to school and share them with her classmates! The pictures and the poems drew her in and engaged her immediately. You cannot ask more from a children's book.

Although my almost three year old daughter doesn't request this book, when I bring it out she invariably ends up sitting in my lap, pointing at the illustrations, telling me which poem to read next and has begun to finish the rhymes for me as I read . For me, it has been an enjoyable book to read aloud and it is nice to see her so involved in poetry.

These are not classic, everyday rhymes. Many of my books have the same old stuff over and over again e.g. Jack and Jill. This book has stuff like "The Dreadful Doings of Jelly Belly" and all sorts of amazing stuff. I read this one on my own, and if dad has time he reads me some of the more complicated ones. I like it. Review Date: 2007-05-16
When you are a new parent and realize the overwhelming task of raising kids and having the family that you want - you realize after much trial and error that there are no "instruction manuals" on how to be a good parent.

"The Biggest Job We'll Ever Have" is the closest thing to the "instruction manual" that every parent should read while their kids are young. Don't wait until family circumstances begin to spiral downward before reading this book. The message is loud and clear: if you want to have great kids you have to learn to be great parents. Parents have to lead and inspire their kids. The whole family will win if you apply the principles of this book early enough to prevent problems rather than use it as a guide to help correct the problems you will inevitably face when you have TEENAGERS!

A Different Perspective on Parenting
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-06
Although this book was written primarily for parents whose children are students at the Hyde Schools in Bath, ME and Woodstock CT, the principles outlined are extremely valuable for all parents dealing with behavioral and character issues with their adolescent children. Malcolm and Laura Gauld emphasize the need for truth over harmony in the home, along with honest accountability from both parents and children. The Gaulds also introduce concepts for helping young people to develop mature character and to realize their own unique potential. The priority for parents is to become an inspiration for their children. As the authors say, parenting "...is hard, is doable, and it's never too late."

Read the book. Sent my son to their school.

I sent my son to their school (HYDE) for 4 years of HS. I read the book and know the authors personally. They are exceptional educators who work wonders with young people. I also bought 5 copies for my adult children who are raising my 10 grandchildren.
I have been around long enough to know something about raising kids and these people have got it right. If you are reading this because you are a little worried about your relationship which your child, buy this book and read it. But of course you have to then do what it says before things will get better.

Book Review, not School Review

Review Date: 2006-08-24
My disclaimer is that I'm a former Hyde Student, one who was not happy while being there but also one who has the benefit of 20 years' hindsight.

I purchased the book a few days ago as I was interested to learn more of the philosophy behind the teaching I experienced first hand. I was curious to understand why I did not like my Hyde experience and what has happened in the intervening years to make me come to understand that I needed character education in my life at that time (and now, too).

While I don't have children of my own, I read the book with fervor and interest as I saw MY childhood and MY parents mirrored in its pages. Flashbacks to various interactions was common - and I had a series of intense emotional responses at times while I read things that hit so close to home I would've sworn that they were writing about my life. The book very clearly lays out the priorities which would've made my childhood more productive (in my humble opinion) and I look forward to being able to put these priorities into practice with my children.

As the title of this review states, I think it's very important to remember that this is a book on parenting. It's a spurious argument to say that if Hyde doesn't practice what they preach 24/7, that the book is inaccurate or that the authors are disingenuous. Living up to these priorities is hard work - and no one is going to be perfect at it, not even Hyde. In fact, the authors clearly detail their DAILY struggle with living up to these priorities in their own personal lives, not to mention helping others do it, too.

Regardless of whether this book is used to market the Hyde programs, whether Hyde is appropriate for you, and whether you've had a good Hyde School experience, the message of the book remains true. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in having a relationship with another human being, not just with their children/parents.

Been there, done that - THANK GOODNESS!

I am currently in Sarasota, FL, visiting my daughter, a former 4-year student and graduate of the Hyde-Bath campus. I was online searching for some resources, as I am considering a private position tutoring a student with dyslexia; although I don't have a lot of direct experience in this area, I am guessing that these students are frustrated, often underappreciated and underestimated...I was adding a copy of the Gauld's book, The Biggest Job, to my shopping cart (even though I was a participant in "the process" for seven consecutive years)when I decided to take a look at the reviews...When I think back on the things I've done as a parent, the choice to become involved with Hyde (please know that I corrected myself and DIDN't write 'send my daughter to' - there's such a difference!)was THE BEST THING I have ever done, absolutely NO REGRETS!! My experience helped me to see my kid for the awesome person she is, rather than focus on a list of shortcomings, which I would subsequently 'FESS UP to being a model for... I must say that I read, WITH AMUSEMENT I might add, a current student's review, and the complaints are typical of one who is not used to the word NO and accepting/establishing limits. I can't wait to share this kid's review with E. - I know she will chuckle...Anyway, my purpose was to revisit the thinking behind the Hyde model as I entertain the possibility of working with a student who has not had much school success, I have learned that there is so much more than meets the eye! My daughter blossomed in this challenging environment, and my own Hyde experience made me re-think just about everything, including my work with students...sooner or later it all comes down to being honest to yourself and others - I am forever inspired and forever grateful. And yes, even after tuition, I am buying the book! For a FRESH way of reflecting on your role as a parent, especially when it seems all that you "do" is for naught, this is so worth it...

Marc Brown, author of the bestselling Arthur Adventure book series offers a new series featuring Arthur's little sister, D.W.

D.W. is enthusiastic about preschool and that makes her the perfect guide for children who are about to embark on this new adventure.

D.W. explains, in detail, each part of the preschool day. She begins with good-byes and explains that all the parents will return for them at the end of the preschool day and continues on, explaining bathroom breaks, the concept of sharing, courtesy, song time, and learning.

The illustrations are colorful and whimsical, but I felt they were too 'busy.' It was tough to focus with so much going on in each picture.

Armchair Interviews says: If you have a child who is ready for preschool, this is a great tool to introduce them to the experience. And while they learn, they can enjoy the story.

I found a perfect condition book and it is now one of his favorite books for me to read to him. I could recite this book from memory. It is a classic and should be on every bookshelf!

I am so upset that this book is now out of print; next to "The Five Chinese Brothers" this was my favorite book as a child. I'm almost 20 now and I can't believe that kids these days will never get to experience the wonder that is "Pickle Things." My mom is a school teacher and both of these great books were stolen out of her classroom, both being originals. If anyone has a good copy of "Pickle Things" lying around let me know. I think that both of these books are must reads for everyone, kids and adults.

I have 2 boys - an almost 2 yr. old and a 4 1/2 yr. old. I picked this book out of the library 2 weeks ago and have read it approximately 100+ times over that period - they absolutely love it! My 4 yr. old "read" it to his little brother about 8 times a few nights ago - he literally memorized everything about it, including my own reflection throughout - a real joy and a great stress-reliever for me!

Marc Brown describes ridiculous uses for pickles and backs the descriptions up with very silly illustrations. And, the fact that "pickle" is kind of a silly word makes it fun.

HIGHLY REcommend - I'm online to buy a supply for gifts!

A few weeks ago, I came across a worn copy of Pickle Things that was left at my house by one of my granddaughters who is now seventeen years old. After that, it spent many years in my second grade classroom. I remembered how much children love it, so I took it to my little two-year-old granddaughter and it has quickly become her favorite book! Now, when I walk in the door of her house, she runs to get Pickle Things for us to read. In fact, she "reads" it to me!!! I wanted to get a new copy for her and I'm sorry to see that it is now out of print.
