Andy Goldsworthy creates ephimeral artworks. Yet made of sand, leaves, ice or dust, his creations fade away with the time, and that's the main character on this book. How time makes dissapear the creations, the forms and the materials.

It's the best way to see his art, a great introduction and a very nice art book. Andy Goldsworthy makes poetry with nature, but nature, allied with time, get its victory.
On the meanwhile, through pictures, we enjoy the art...

As a sculptor myself I can truely admire what effort goes into each of Andy's environmental works. In some he works with nature and others against but always with respect of the materials used. Truely inspiring and a wonderful narative style of writing which makes you feel like you were there when the works were created!

Amazing photos - great complement to the DVD "Rivers and Tides"

I had viewed the DVD "Rivers and Tides" which is a tour of Andy Goldsworthy's artistic endeavors. It is very compelling and left a lasting impression. I wanted more and discovered, to my delight, that a large number of Andy's creations shown in the DVD were documented in the book "Time". There had to be photographs of Andy's work since most of them are not permanent in either time or space. In the DVD, we see the creation process as it occurs and then it may dissolve or move. In the book, it is "frozen" in time and space and can be appreciated as a work of art. I recommend seeing the DVD first so the book's contents can be appreciated even more.

Andy Goldsworthy's work inspires me to look at nature in a very deep way.
His use of the environment and natural materials provokes me to look at how I can
incorporate more natural materials into my own work. I am in awe everytime I open up the book and look at the images. I especially like red clay and the way it went through it's own process through time.
a gem, a timeless exploration of our natural world!

A book about twins that doesn't have research
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-31
It was refreshing to read a book about twins that wasn't all research and statistics. This book tells a short story about the lives of twins that are either famous or have accomplished something extraordinary or stick out in some other way. Notables are Muhammad Ali's twin daughter, the Hennessy's, Tamera and Tia (Sister Sister show), Mario Andretti and his twin Aldo and Jane Seymour's twin boys. Also the story of the Jim Twins (in every book about twins) and the famous Hensel conjoined twins.

Very interesting reading, and I agree it's a good coffee table book. I do think they should have more boy-girl and other fraternal twins sets represented though.

A book that looks pretty on your coffee table.

I liked this book enough. I was disappointed that it focused so much on identical twins and same-sex twins. (My twins are boy/girl...there is only one vignette in the book.) I haven't found myself reading it over and over. The pictures are lovely and the stories are fine. I give it a B or maybe B+.

Genuine and inspiratinal for twins and non-twins!

This book truly touched my heart. I am a twin and felt that it honestly portrayed the many complex and deep emotions and issues that twins experience. I can't wait to share this book with my twin and family! And there are so many amazing people in the book. I didn't realize Muhammad Ali and Jane Seymour had twins. And how different each relationship can be, yet also have such commonalities. I absolutely love this book and find myself opening it up often to read an essay and look at the beautiful photos.

A disappointment

Review Date: 2009-02-11
I am a long-time collector of photography books, including photographer's monographs and books focusing on specific regions or people, and would probably rate myself as an "advanced amateur" in terms of my own abilities. I really looked forward to getting this book after seeing the reviews -- it is a region I'd love to travel to. When I got the book, I was... disappointed. It took me a few turns through the book to figure out why.

The publisher's promo calls Mr. Isaac a "world-renowned photographer." I'd never heard of him but, well, OK, I took that on faith to mean that the book would offer up world-class photographs. That's not the case. Unfortunately, Isaac's work rarely rises above the level of the postcard shots taken by moderately talented tourists. It's hard to take a bad shot in a place like this -- a region with such spectacular scenery, colorful (literally) people, and a troubled history. India and Pakistan point nukes at each other over this Shangri-La. Isaac should have dug deeper and offered a "vision" that is unique and compelling and that gets across both the physical beauty and the history of this place. Many or most of the shots seem to be taken from the same perspective, with the same lighting, the same blah.... etc. Very few pics stand out -- ones that you say, "Man, I'd pay money for a print of that to hang on my wall." I kept thinking what could have been done by color photogs like Steve McCurry or Sam Abell or B&W masters like Salgado or Antonin Kratochvil.

I gave this book 3 stars instead of two because it's still interesting, particularly if you are curious about Kashmir or hope to travel there. But mostly, it's a book that seems designed for the waiting area in your dentist's office.

The Beauty of The Vale of Kashmir

The Vale of Kashmir by John Isaac is by far the finest book I've seen to date on the magical state of Kashmir. John's photos and text demonstrate how passionate he is about the revealing the beauty of Kashmir and it's people. He concentrates, not on the political issues of the day but on the true and lasting beauty of Kashmir, its scenery, people and culture. Each of his incredible photographs shows this splendor not only in the breathtaking quality of the photo itself but in how he reaches to the very soul of the Kashmiri people and the land in which they live. One senses the kindness and compassion of the people through John's photos as well as being awed by his magnificent landscapes. By western standards Kashmir is a poor country although reading through The Vale of Kashmir one understands its great richness in culture and beauty, be it from friendly smiles, exquisite handicrafts or the magnificent landscapes. What John Isaac wants most to accomplish is a true understanding of this land and for people from around the world to visit and enjoy Kashmir in all it's grandeur. Read and Enjoy!

Among John Isaac's many, many gifts, perhaps the greatest one is that he sees the world through his very loving heart. Not only is he a fabulous story teller who can paint an experience vividly with words, but his stunning photographs make you stop and feel what he wants you to see.

I didn't want to put this book down; I wanted to savor it from cover to cover. Though many books clamor for a spot on the coffee table, this one gets the place of honor; in easy reach to study and enjoy.

A beautiful book and an important one; Kashmir must be returned to the world's attention in just this way.

This book is one of the true fine photography books published. The paper and inks used are far higher quality than those mass produced in China. As you may know, publishers only do that for the best of the best artists - maybe one in a thousand.

The book spans landscape to intimate portrait photography. There is a short series of a father and son within the book that is so emotional that one can feel the love between them. Each of his photographs draws the viewer in until one feels no longer apart but entangled within the setting.

During a talk that I attended, he told how he spent weeks getting to know small groups and specific families until he became part of the backdrop and his picture taking was welcomed. One of his photographs won a $25,000 contract. Although he had already paid generously ($20) for the photograph and gotten written permission from the subject, he returned to India and found the family again. When he discovered the holy man who had been the subject was ill, he paid all his medical bills and gave money to his son for future care. Listening to him, I realized that he doesn't just photograph people but uses his photography to show his love for them.

If you would like to see two galleries of his photos and the long list of awards that include an international lifetime achievement award, check out his website at [...] .

I hope one day that I can take photographs that have the same power and depth as his does.

I recently met John in Austin TX. What a treat! He explained how and why he created the book. One story that he told me was how he spent weeks getting to know people and was then allowed to photograph them. John's photos have effected foreign policy and the fate of thousands of people.

Well composed photos and wonderful use of color makes this book something special in my library and a book that I will cherish for years.

We've Come This Far is an insider's inside look at a pillar of African American Christianity, Abyssinian Baptist Church. Bob Gore's skill as a photographer and his commitment to his faith are evident on each page of this lovingly crafted work. In some cultures in the world, taking a photograph of a person is looked at with trepidation because it is believed to be an attempt to capture the subject's soul. And that's exactly what Mr. Gore has done in this book and there is no need for fear. The pictures and accompanying essays capture real life/real time moments in the broad scope of the life and spirit of this historic church.

I've never been to New York, and I've never been to a black Baptist church. But the spirit of this institution- its leaders and worshippers- absolutely radiate off the pages of this book. It is unbelievably inspiring. It would make an excellent gift for any liberal Christian activist you know, for a pastor or clergy member working hard to integrate the church into the community, or for yourself. The text is also beautifully formatted, and the history and descriptions are very accessible. The primary focus is always on the black and white photos found on almost every page. Beautiful.

The rich and vibrant history of Abysinnian Church and the Harlem community is revealed in this work by Bob Gore. The photos are of such superior quality that you can feel the message conveyed in the picture without using the text. With the additon of text there is a wonderful account of the Harlem experience, chock full of information about the history and the individual personal expressions of those who were there when it happened. This photographic journal is vibrant and colorful in both word and image. There are real accounts of Abysinnian Baptist Church's history, including it's spiritual, political, social and economic relationships with the communities that it serves. I urge you to consider this book not just for reading but also as an important addition to your library.

I've been to Abyssinian only twice, but was almost overwhelmed each time with the power of commitment and community. Bob Gore's book captures with warmth and intimacy the spirit of this special place and its people. It is the only church I've been to where I felt that power of love which Christianity must have carried through the centuries.

Michelle Kwan has always been one of my idols through my skating career. This book really helped me to see that I really can make my dreams come true. This book is excellent for anyone of any age. I haven't met a person who hasn't loved it.

I have read Michelle Kwan's 'The Winning Attitude'T'wice!
While I no longer belong to the age group that the writing's are aimed at, not for a long........time.I nevertheless was
impressed by the writings. I fail to understand why anyone who has read this book would consider it suitable only for children. One only has to keep up with the News to know of the problems that prevail in communities among all age groups to see how the principals laid out in this book, which I found to be both educational and inspirational, could prove valuable to anyone who takes the time study and follow the guidelines therein.I would suggest this book could be used in schools if not as part of the text certainly in civic classes!
With the author as an ''outstanding role model'' who lives by the
very same rules I could only imagine this book which is full of
''commonsense'' as having a positive influence on schoolgoers,
teachers and parents alike.

It is a bit annoying that amazon places it for age 9 - 12 and that reviewers say it's good for their children. (not good for themselves?) Though the book is full of 'childish' languages, the winning attitude here is full of youth and refreshing, unlike those written by professional psychiatrists - I'm not saying they are not good. I recommend this book to all who love Michelle.

My name is Debra Marlin. I am the author of "Yellowdog",and "Yellowpup".
Over the years so many have told me of the warm hearted reviews appearing
here on Amazon. Thank you so much. I'm glad that the images and text have
touched the hearts of so many. I just entered the realm of the internet or I would have written this sooner. Keep an eye on Amazon soon. I am about to
publish an extraordinary fine-art horse book and a follow-up to Yellowdog and
Yellowpup. The horse book is every bit as poignant, and mystical as the dog
books and just as beautiful. I spent four years in Carmel Valley, and Paso Robles, CA. shooting it. There is also a beautiful book soon to be released which is of the paintings from Yellowdog. It will be a signed and numbered limited edition. So many thanks to Amazon, for over the years so generously
promoting my books. I'm sure there will be many more. Sincerly Debby Marlin

After losing my Golden, Cody, after twelve years I have been walking around in a daze. This book helped me sort out my deep feelings of grief and absolute despair. These dogs are spirits in our lives, true soulmates. They are there for us through thick and thin and go far beyond being man's best friend. I could easily associate with Marlin's deep love and deep sense of loss. I wish I could sit with her over a cup of tea and just talk Goldens. A deeply passionate book.

This is a pictorial history of the author's love affair with her Golden Retrievers. The "story" is about 30 pages and the pictures about 50 or so. The story will grab you in your gut and hit you right in the heart of how you feel about your current (or former) Golden Retriever. The story about the cover photo is especially moving. For a non "how-to" book, this one is THE BEST!

'Above Chicago' by aerial photographer Robert Cameron is an example of my very favorite type of souvenir to buy when I was visiting a new city, generally on business. There is simply nothing quite as evocative as this truly amazing selection of photographs of an eminantly photogenic city. I have seen similar efforts done, for example, by David King Gleason on Boston. And, while Boston is easily as interesting a subject as Chicago, Mr. Gleason doesn't seem to carry it off quite as well. I do miss the bit of local color added to volumes on London (Alistair Cook) and San Francisco (Herb Caen), but the star of the show is the quality and expert selection of photographs.

Chicago is such a beautiful city and from the air you understand what great civic planning can do for a city. Cameron hits all the most important areas and does not miss anything; from Oak Park to Lake Forest, for Aurora to the Miracle Mile, it's all here. This is one of his best books and he does Chicago proud. This is THE definitive book on barns. We own one copy in Virginia and now bought another one for a our other home in Nova Scotia.

It is a masterpiece for learning about old barn designs and also construction techniques. Barns have become our family passion. An old barn from Maine, the parts, is to be reconstructed and made into our home outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. My son has tarped and is salvaging two old structures here in Nova Scotia...which will be moved to a different location on a new beach/pond piece of ours in Nova Scotia. Our 250 year old farm house on the ocean has a spectacular old barn!

Eric Sloane has clearly directed our way. Many others who appreciate these spectacular old heritage structures need his book! Whether you want to just page through and look at old barns- or recreate and salvage the buildings- this is IT!

Eric Sloane truly loves his subject and his detailed descriptions and accompanying drawings of old barns make this a fascinating book. Part history, part art, this book catalogs the different styles of barns common in our nation. After reading this book you'll have a much greater appreciation of American barns and sight seeing in rural America will become a much richer experience.

Eric Sloane is known to many of us who love traditional country things as the superb and prolific American artist and author who gave us books with good words and even better drawings. Sloane was an accidental historian of that era of American life when agriculture was king. I cherish my copies of his A Museum of Early American Tools and A Reverence For Wood.

The Age of Barns was first published in 1967. I saw this 2001 version lying on a table in a friend's house and begged to borrow it. The sub-title is An Illustrated Review of Classic Barn Styles and Construction. It is more than that as it also shows silos, root cellars, springhouses, sugarhouses, corn cribs and smoke houses. Also shown are tools of barn builders, construction methods, types of ventilation systems and even hinge design.

Sloane shows the evolution of this most important structure with examples large and small and from many places. Medieval, English, German, American barns. Small and large log barns. The Appalachian overhung-loft barn built on two cribs, decorated Pennsylvania barns, a Georgia barn, a Maine barn, a Tennessee saltbox barn. Pent roofs, gambrel roofs, extended bays, threshing bays. Connecting barns, built so the farmer could do a winter day's chores without going outside.

I have known two barns intimately. The barn on our Wisconsin farm was a classic two-story bank barn built of stone on the lower level with hand-hewn posts and beams above, a cupola topping it off. The farmer whose death allowed my parents to buy the farm had been an alfalfa producer so the barn had huge mows that were filled both from the outside using a hay hook and from the inside where teams and wagons were taken straight in and through. The dairy herd was housed in the lower section next to the sixteen-foot silo. I pulled a lot of, um, teats in that barn.

The humble hillbilly barn at Heartwood in Missouri has two sections separated by a drive-through. In barns this design is called double-crib; in houses it is called a dog-trot. The construction is of hewn oak logs with half-dovetail corners. The logs are held off the ground only with loose stones, so early deterioration was inevitable. When the barn was still in pretty good shape we took a family photo one Fourth of July. My cousin and I hung the huge American flag that was hand-sewn by a grandmother for Lincoln's inauguration and we all posed in front of it on the ground.

Born in 1905, Eric Sloane died in 1985, walking to a luncheon in his honor celebrating his memoir, Eighty: An American Souvenir. His fine books will live on long after him, a legacy of focus and craftsmanship.

This is a clearly written, funny, moving and fascinating account of what it was like for the author to work in Antarctica over a number of years. While he has told it like a one-year trip, in fact it is a distillation of 14 years experience.

The book is distinguished in several respects. First, the photography is wonderful - just it is worth the price of admission. Second, there is the story of working there as a scientist, in particular the work underwater. It is really fascinating and full of quirky tidbits, like mummified seals thousands of years old or the faulty insulation of some fish. Third, there are the personal tales of what it is like for the residents, and they are harrowing not in any adventuresome sense, but in the psychological demands placed on them. Women beware of living there with so many hungry males!

Warmly recomended. It is also beautifully written from a stylistic standpoint. Truly a mini-masterpiece of the genre.

The author, Jim Mastro, got to spend one year at the bottom of the world and he wrote first person text and included beautiful photographs in his presentation. Some of the photographs capture the incredible beauty of Antartica and of the beauty of the wildlife.

Better than expected

I expected a tome from someone who worked in Antarctica, heavy on the narrative, light on coffee-table book quality photographs. I was pleasantly surprised to find a fine quality book with excellent photographs. Well-written and nicely laid out, this makes a good introduction to modern-day Antarctic history.

I've read the account of the doctor who had breast cancer and her rescue "Ice Bound" as well as a scientist's account of working in the Antarctic area, "Crystal Desert". Neither of them were as good as this book.

I've travelled to the Antarctic peninsula (as well as the fantastic South Georgia Island, a sub-antarctic island), and it's a wonderfully beautiful place. Some of the photographs capture the southernmost continent's incredible beauty and equally fantastic wildlife.

Recommended.

If you are in the least bit interested in Antarctica, as I have been for about 20 years, READ THIS BOOK. Mastro is a brilliant travel writer whose simple, witty, easily enjoyable style keeps you feeling as though you were there experiencing the whole thing yourself. An amazing narrative insight into several different areas of the frozen continent, in weather conditions beyond belief, as well a trip below the ice on a diving expedition, and a trip to Bird Island on the Antarctic Peninsua. I learned so much form this book! It would be well worth the price even if it were only in text form. The amazing pictures throughout it really add to the sense of what it is really like there.

This is an inspirational book, from the cover shot of Tiptoe Through the Tulips through the painted cars, the assemblage cars, and the more mutated vehicles. Art Cars are a strangely friendly version of Folk Art. Don't they put a smile onto your face when you see one driving past?

The earlier Harrod Blank book, Wild Wheels, ties in with the Wild Wheels movie on art cars, and this one is a continuation of that book with newer art cars and some helpful construction tips for your own art car.

All that have seen my copy have loved it. Hardly anyone could view this book and not smile. Too bad it's now gone out of print, but there are other wonderful books and a brand new movie by Harrod Blank.

One of the most joyous picture books ever published. Put a copy on your coffee table at home or your desk at work, then sit back and wait for your visitors to start chortling. It's impossible to look at just one page!

This is such a fun book.

This book is just a blast -- it is so fun and inspirational. It made me happy that I own a crappy old car, because now I can run out and paint it without worrying about the resale value.
