In Her Own Words: The Life Of An American Opera SingerReview Date: 2003-10-14
BEVERLY'S LIFE was blessed with a successful opera career, a loving husband- journalist Peter Greenough and children. When Beverly's children were diagnosed with impediments- such as deafness, Beverly had to put her career on hold to raise her children. She is not only an excellent opera singer but a first class human being, selfless and hard-working. Beverly has advocated human rights and has participated in The March Of Dimes as well as other causes and charities, has won a Grammy award for her performance in the opera Manon, and has won two of the highest awards in the world- the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the French Legion Award. In addition to her opera career, her biographies (other than this one there is also her other biographies including "Bubbles"), Beverly has done a lot of "tv" time- she appeared in the Ed Sullivan Show singing Donizetti, substituted for Johnny Carson one time when he fell ill, and hosted her own tv talk show in the late 70's "Lifestyles With Beverly Sills" in which she was often paired with actor Danny Kaye, singer Julie Andrews and comedian Carrol Burnett. She was in "The Muppet Show" singing duets with Miss Piggy and one time even appeared in the San Diego phone book. What a life it's been.
BEVERLY'S CAREER: All the nuances and backstage stories of her opera performances are to be found here. Beverly talks of her dislike for the role of The Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute. The character has only two high-calibre arias and a finale ensemble but for the most part the Queen is backstage waiting her cue. Beverly amazed audiences at the Vienna State Opera singing the Queen's high F's in late 1960's. Her performance in Handel's Julius Caesar launched her career. It was her Cleopatra, with the taxing coloratura and lyricism that got her officially recognized. She had sung in English before in Douglas Moore's original opera of the late 50's "The Ballad Of Baby Doe". She would continue singing lyric coloratura roles such as Lakme, Zerbinetta (Ariadne of Naxos) Lucia Di Lammermoor, Manon, Thais, Marie from "La Fille Du Regiment", Violetta from La Traviata and Queen Marguerite from Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots as well as Queen Shemakha from "Coq D'Or." But this was only the beginning. From 1970 to 1973, Beverly performed a revival of Donizetti's Tudor Queen Trilogy- Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux for the New York City Opera, her beloved home company. These roles are demanding and risky for a light-voiced soprano, but although Beverly admits to having shortened her opera career because of these heavy roles, she reaped its benefits because they were sold-out, sensational performances that no other soprano has since surpassed. It was the role of the fiery Queen Elizabeth that landed her a cover in Time magazine and marked her best moment in her opera career. Other fiery, challenging roles Beverly tackled included Lucrezia Borgia and Norma, all to great acclaim. Beverly recorded several operas on LP's in the 70's several of which have been reissued on cd- including a lush box set of the Tudor Queen Trilogy of Donizetti, compilation albums of bel canto arias, Mozart and Strauss concert arias and her performances in brand name operas. We will never forget the glorious life of Beverly Sills.

If you're looking for Bix, you can stop here!Review Date: 2007-09-22
To put it simply, this is IT. The One. Order it.
Berton's book is a nice read but there's information in this book that changes the whole scope of how we should see Bix's depression/nomadism/problems. I'll not print it here, you'll have to read it.
Suffice it to say that of all the "reasonably available" books on Beiderbecke, this is the beginning AND the end.
Probably not the starting point for the neophyte but still, "THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY".
If Bix was there, Jean Pierre Lion was there too! Review Date: 2005-07-22
But Mr. Lion, a French business executive with a deep passion for early jazz, has taken a very refreshing approach to the Bix story. As a Frenchman, he's able to stand back and put Bix in the context of the American Roaring '20s. The book is biography, part social history, part travel book. It's great reading, and not ruined by self-indulgent musical analysis. Lion wrote the book on the assumption that his readers already know a fair bit about Bix's musical contribution.
Mr. Lion traveled to virtually every single spot in America where Bix had an important moment. Given that Bix died at age 28, it was possible. And his book is full of his wonderful little photographs of these historic sites (old hotels, city streets, private homes, ballrooms, etc.) as they appear today. That may prove to have the greatest appeal to Bixologists. You can toss Jean Pierre's book in your car and go on one heck of a across-country field trip.
Like almost all jazz histories, this book won't sell well, and Mr. Lion obviously didn't create it for money. But it's a little treasure for jazz buffs - so don't let this one slip away! I immediately read it from cover to cover, and because of its beautiful visual appeal, it will be pulled from my book shelf for many years to come. Felicitations, Monsieur Lion!

PAPERBACK VERSIONReview Date: 2007-10-01
It appears as if the pictures are copies of copies of copies taken out of the the original hardback and copied right on some copier rather than done correctly all over again, and there is at least one VERY GOOD picture M I S S I N G!!!!--one of my favorites--where Bob is reading a magazine or paper up close and he has his hat on. NOT DONE RIGHT IS ALSO A TOP FAVORITE: the one where Bob Dylan is playing chess at a French cafe--REALLY REALLY GOOD ONE, I love that one very much--but it still seems COPY OF COPY OF COPY quality--IT IS DARK AND GRITTY. The quality of the pictures in the original hardback book are FAR superior. and I SEE it. I did a copy of the one at the cafe on a copier before I returned the book to the library and believe me it is BETTER quality than the one in this paperback version!!! AAAAHHHHH!!! Maybe people won't notice, but I do notice it. Unfortunately I had to return the hardback book to the library.
P L E A S E TELL THE PUBLISHER TO R E D O THIS BOOK PROPERLY AND RESPECT Bob Dylan's fans because we want quality pictures. This book deserves to be done again properly. Paperback is okay to save the forests, but the quality of the pictures has something to do with the process and technology that they use. They just dished out a paperback version and copied the pictures from some other copies (as I see it) just to make money with no concern about the QUALITY OF THE PICTURES.
May I also suggest Dylan: Visions, Portraits & Back Pages as a book with FAR FAR FAR FAR SUPERIOR quality pictures and it even costs less!
Please do this PICTURE BOOK all over again, PUBLISHERS!!! These pictures deserve FIRST QUALITY production.

They will break your heart absolutely. If you love Dylan and the mythology he created around himself, this book will give you a glimpse behind the curtain. The images of Joan Baez and Dylan are so gorgeous you'll want to duck out of your busy life and cry for five crucial minutes. The image of a back-lit Bob and a shadowy Joan in profile is a just, simple ode to these monoliths. These photos give us what we've intimated about Bob all along.

collection. Each of the 112 pages comprising this paperback
has at least one photograph, and many pages have two or three!
In my mind the pictures alone are worth a binding of their own. They
include many of his co-workers, and famous peers. After looking
at all of them for the first time, you really get a "feel" for
the environment in which he has been working (living) for the
last 30 - 40 years.
The entire collection of quotes (quotes and pictures are all you get, folks)
are catagorized by a plethora of topics, which enables quick referencing,
so you really should learn ALOT about his PERSONALITY.
I say "personality" because the quotes are in
conversational mode, candid, ranginging from silly quips and
understatements to very sincere and thoughtful comments; the way
I imagine he shares with intimates. This is not a stilted,
unemotional, professional collection of aphorisms, and I feel better informed
as a result.

Joe Ely - Pulsebeat Of A Life Well LivedReview Date: 2007-11-05
I feel blessed that I was able to sit in the front row at Joe Ely's multimedia presentation of Bonfire Of Roadmaps at the Texas Book Festival held in Austin on November 3rd and 4th, 2007. The audience was packed and enthusiastic. A line formed at the book signing following Joe's readings and songs and video. I was very pleased to have Joe sign my book for me. Later, Joe Ely and Joel Guzman and Joe's band filled the space around the Texas Capitol steps with their magical music and lyrics. Joe was deep into his songs and making every effort to fill each listener with the unique blend of country, roots, wisdom, adventure, personal challenge, disappointments and triumphs of which his music is composed. Much of the time he sang with eyes closed as he drew from deep down the well of his own life experience. I will always remember this concert and I have the book to bring back the feelings of the road, feelings that Joe Ely was kind enough to share with us all.

British Invasion - Who are those people?Review Date: 2007-01-26
British Beat: Then, Now And Rare 1960-1969 by Terry Rawling tracks the overwhelming majority of these bands through their lives during the critical first nine years. He describes the band's origins, their activities during the period under study and their demise and/or current status.
While the coverage could be considered superficial, it is far from that for those interested in the music of the British Invasion period who can and should use it as a guidebook for more in depth study.
One final truly touching thing about the book is found on the inside back cover. Author Rawling shows several score photos of members of some of bands as they appeared in recent times. The images are a fitting close to the period and to this very information and entertaining volume.

Bravo for Bruno! A serious biography of a Renaissann man and conductor of genius!Review Date: 2006-05-20
Walter's music room was all of Europe and the great concert halls and recording studios heard his majestic music making in operas, symphonies and chamber music. He composed until 1910
forsaking creative compositon to become a peerless conductor of
works by Mahler; Beethoven;Brahms; Bruckner; Wagner; Verdi and
the other gods in music's pantheon.
Walter had seen and experienced tragedy. His younger daughter
Greta was murdered by her husband; he lost his homeland as the
Nazis conquered Austria and expelled him and other Jewish geniuses from the Reich; he had extramarital affairs but was a
decent, honorable and serious man. Walter loved literature becoming friendly with Thomas Mann the great novelists; he enjoyed reading, writing on music and was a strong but understanding conductor. He and Toscanini were friends.
This is a book for those who are familiar with classical music .
The book is very detailed and one almost feels like he/she
has seen a review of every concert conducted by Walter!
While this can become tedious to the general reader the overall
effect is one of respect for Walter.
In a time when classical music is a minority taste
the co-authors have done their homework producing a well written
and researched biograpy of Dr. Walter.

A gentle reader opinesReview Date: 2001-07-12
But aside from that, it was simply great fun to read personal vignettes about so many eminent musicians, composers, conductors, and others. I found the book entertaining reading too, I mean to say--a dandy thing, in the summer (or any other time as well)!
While I may be an amateur as far as the contents of the biography go, I am also a professor and teacher of writing, and it was gratifying to find a biography written so smoothly that reading it was a pleasure, which is by no means the rule in scholarly biographies. There are notes and indeces aplenty for the scholars, but these should not dissuade the general reader--they do not get in the way in the least.
Add to this the fact that the volume is a handsomely designed one, with splendid pictures and an attractive typeface, and you have a book truly worth owning--or giving, for that matter.

Anyway, when __Bubbles__ first came out, I was ten years old. I devoured it and believed, totally, every word. When __Beverly__ was first published, I didn't even look at it, because what more would she have to say?
I re read __Bubbles__ recently, and was able to read between the lines: there was the idea implicit in __Bubbles__ that her life was one of unbridled joy: ok her children had challenges, but she was up to them! La, la, la... I believed that as a child, but as an adult, it seemed obvious that there's no way two such different families blended easily, no way it didn't hurt to be repeatedly rejected by Dr. Rosenstock, etc. etc.
So I finally read __Beverly__. __Bubbles__ was enjoyable, but __Beverly__ is magnificent! It's the difference between a pop tart and a homemade berry pie. It's more intense, more flavorful, and if a pit sneaks in there it just reminds you that that's what authenticity feels like. __Bubbles__ was when she was younger and still eager to please; __Beverly__ was what you see is what you get.
On to the details of her life: raised in a musical, multilingual family, with a seamstress mother (in a time when opera companies liked you to bring your own costume) and happening on one of the world's best voice teachers, growing up so that the only way she ever earned money was by entertaining--she darn well __better__ have become one of the world's great performers! She never had to sweat her way through French 1, or clean houses to pay for her lessons. On the other hand, she so changed the musical scene that you can lose sight of the fact that in her time opera stars were NOT Americans.
The tragedies of being rejected by her extended family for her marriage, and of bearing two children with handicaps, of naively becoming the head of a bankrupt arts organization are, in __Beverly__, not glossed over. They are used to illustrate Sills's resilient and complex personality.
I sincerely hope that __Beverly__ will come back into print, or that it will be used as the basis for the ultimate Sills biography now that her amazing life has ended.
