Great system - well explaned

Coach Gregory has provided a great system for youth coaches. It is very easy for the children to understand, and difficult for to defend. We are currently installing this system with 7-9 year olds with a coaching staff working together for the first time.

The terms are not too technical, but some might require a little refresher. I would still recommend this book to first time coaches with little to no coaching/football experience.

There are a couple of grammatical, typographical and "cut and paste" type errors. They do not distract from the useability of the text.

I highly recommend not only the book, but the DVD video series.

This book is by far one of the most innovative and insightful books that I have read in some time. They also challenge the more common images that gangs represent as well. I found myself questioning the basic reasons for there are gangs in America, and found myself finding a whole new perspectie as these people view their dscieion to be in a gang as an economic choice of survival, not that of one they get into because they have a choice.

I recommend this book STRONGLY for all students of Criminal Justice.

I found this to be one of the most informative books about understanding the gang concept in America. Howerver, it also helped me to debunk the same myths about gang and agang structure as well. This book made me look at gangs as an alternative economic choice for those involved in the gangs and the difficult choices that many of them face that those on the outside of the gang life will never have to make.

I would rate this book on a list of must reads for anyone interested in a study of criminal justice.

Good articulation of gang research into a well-written text.

Shelden and colleagues do an excellent job in analyzing the literature, from Thrasher to present, on gangs and the culture surrounding them. They critically examine statistical data and use several sociological theories in an attempt to better understand this growing societal phenomena. The original research from the Detroit area interviews is compelling. Certainly a book that would aid anyone's understanding of gangs, gang culture, or even graffiti (they use photographs to help explain this). Scholars looking for a book as a supplemental text in Delinquency or like courses would find this book a great asset!

Mike Connery's Youth to Power is the best documentation you will find on how the youth of America is being organized to have a major impact on the 2008 election. His tireless reporting and in person experiences perfectly capture this new movement in American politics--the rise of the Millennial Generation. If you want to avoid being surprised by the youth vote and its power in 2008, read the truths Connery uncovers in the course of this excellent book.

Youth to Power is a very well-written, brief history of youth-focused political organizing, with a focus on the 2004 election cycle. It profiles some of the key players in the space and makes a cogent argument for why progressive leaders should focus on youth. As the director of a nonpartisan organization in the space, I found Youth to Power to be indespensible. I recommend it to many people, especially those who think they are in the know but really have little sense of the role youth and youth organizing play in electoral politics.

Engaging, Insightful History of Emerging Movement

Mike Connery is well-placed to write the history of the emerging progressive youth movement. He has, after all, been near the heart of it almost since its birth in the years preceding the '04 election.

Youth to Power is an engaging history of the lessons, mis-steps, and huge successes of the dozens of organizations and thousands of grassroots leaders across the country who comprise the new progressive movement.

This book is a recommended read for anyone working in youth politics -- and anyone who wants to figure out how a progressive majority is possible in America.

I ordered this as an addition to our resource "library" for my children as we do Bible study daily... I have four children ranging in age from 2 - 8 and if I find it difficult to explain something to them pertaining to the Bible in language they can understand, I can often find an easier way to get the message across by finding answers to their questions in this book. I would recommend it!

I bring home a lot of Christian books that I think my kids will read, but they rarely do. This one is different...my 8 and 10 yr olds are truly interested. They like to ask me the questions and see what kind of answer I come up with. With the scripture included, it's a devotional study in disquise!

We both would recommend this book and others in the series to those searching and new to the faith. It is reassuring to know the answers to some of those suprising questions my children ask!

Review Date: 2001-11-20
The Sept. 11 attack on the United States apparently has caused other national tragedies to pale in comparison. Some of these tragedies, including the Columbine massacre, involved school violence.

In this book, Wade Rowatt focuses on the underlying reasons for school violence. Plus, he focuses on many other areas that are causing crises for today's youth.

This is a very detailed book that will require careful reading. It is full of insights that are both frightening and enlightening. If you are a parent, someone who works with youth, or even cares about youth, this book belongs in your library.

A Must Read for Anyone Who is Concerned About Young People!

Review Date: 2001-06-19
As the editor who worked with Wade on this book, I will admit that I have a certain level of bias associated with this book, but, in spite of that, I can honestly say that Wade has written a book that will inspire, encourage, and enlighten any parent, minister, teacher, etc. who has ever had to struggle with raising a young person in this world of ours that is filled with all sorts of vices to tempt our young people. Almost every issue that our children are dealing with today is discussed in this book in a way that is accessible and helpful. Once again, Wade Rowatt has written a book that will serve to help all of us who are struggling to deal with adolescents in crisis.
