This book provides an excellent and concise history of the mutual fund industry beginning with the first mutual funds created following the civil war up to the late 1980s. It discusses abuses by mutual funds during the market boom of the 1920s and the resultant legislation/regulation that was adopted in the ICA of 1940 and the 1970 amendments. Relevant litigation and summaries of court decisions are provided though 1987. The second half of the book provides a detailed econometric analysis of competition in the mutual fund industry. Policy implications resulting from the research are provided. This book is an excellent addition to any academic library and is a good read for anyone interested in conducting mutual fund research.

Every investor, not just lawyers, should read this book! Mr. Sterba drills down through all of the confusion and presents a clear, concise and entertaining book on the practicalities and realities of investing. His asset allocation approach to investment, utilizing no-load mutual funds, should be the holy grail for anyone seeking to manage almost any amount of capital in todays economic climate. I suspect that far less money would have been lost by the average investor in the turbulent markets of the past three years, had they read this book and utilized the disciplines Sterba recommends.

This excellent book is one of the more reasonable explanations of Christianity I've ever read. I can't recommend it too highly. Also see Robert V. Thompson's "A Voluptuous God."

The God I Don't Believe In made me think. From it I learned about Jesus, and I learned about myself. For theology, it's easy reading. I recommend it for anyone who wants to clarify his beliefs.

Since I am just learning about the investment world I have read ten books so far about how to invest, where to invest, how much one should invest, and so on. "How To Invest The Smart Way" by Stephen Littauer is the best investment book that I have read. Since it covers Stocks, Bonds, and Mutual Funds it covers hows to invest in each and what to watch out for in a very concise manner. I borrowed this book from our local library and I hope to purchase it in order to have it as a resource book for future use. Of the ten books that I have read so far this is the only one that I have selected to put into my own library. So if you want to learn the basics about investing that is in a clear, concise, and understandable language then select this book.

in an affable style, financial wizard-philanthropist Dreyfus' seemingly casual biography takes on a larger perspective, partly because of who he is,(of course), but mostly from his unselfish desire to share an important discovery. THE LION OF WALL STREET and the more recent version of A REMARKABLE MEDICINE HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED are essensially the same book, the paperback REMARKABLE an update of the hardcover LION

This is the one book I wish I had read BEFORE Black Monday. It would have saved me a lot of money. Most "how to" investment books are too simple, or needlessly complicated. This is the best, no nonsense, book that really helps me understand my investments.

Read why 80% of all mutual funds fail to even match the market, let alone "Beat the Market". After reading this book you will buy nothing but index funds.

That's all I now own. Mutual funds are passe.

I Breathe Easier After Taking this Course

Review Date: 2005-10-26
This is a course, not a book. I ended up dramatically improving my confidence and skills in mutual fund investing. The course was fun, interactive, and has an instructor giving additional information. It's much better than plowing through a financial book.

The author gave me information on all four major rating services: Lipper, S&P, Morningstar and ValueLine. He showed me that they're not all the same and why. In one example, two of the services rated the same fund "Average" while the other two rated the fund "Above Average."

One of the best things was the Personal Risk Profile by Dr. Droms that tells you how to allocate among the fund categories based upon your own risk tolerance.

Great course which helped me immensely.

Entertaining and Educational

Understanding Mutual Funds is the only interactive course on mutual funds that's both fun and educational.

Your instructor for this course is from Lipper, a Reuters company - you've probably heard of them. They don't sell mutual funds - they rate them, over 100,000 of them, so they are probably the world's top experts on mutual funds.

You'll learn the different kinds of funds; equity, bond, hedge, index, sector, real estate, money market and so forth, how funds charge for what they do, how to spot red flags that should be an indicator to sell and how the four major ratings services, Lipper, Morningstar, Standard and Poor's and Value Line, don't all agree even on the same fund!

We've even included an interactive questionnaire that gives you your own risk tolerance profile that you can match up to an asset allocation profile developed by Dr. Bill Droms an asset manager and professor of Finance at Georgetown University.

Now you can be a successful mutual fund owner AND sleep better by knowing which funds belong in your own portfolio based on your own personal tolerance for risk.

If you want to learn how the major players on Wall Street choose their investments, you'll really enjoy this book. Kazanjian is a wonderful writer. He makes these investment concepts very easy to understand. I have been a stock broker for over 25 years, yet I learned a great deal from this book. It's interesting how you read about a lot of the investment pros Kazanjian profiles in the media all the time. But it wasn't until I read this book that I got to know them and felt like I truly understood their investment philosophies.
