Outstanding reference book for home inspection.

If you want a great book that completely covers all areas of inspecting your house or condominium, then this book is a must. I based my purchase decision on the 5 star ratings this book received many of the Amazon Top 50 Book Reviewers. I knew that those reviews are always valid and real and now I know why this book is so highly rated.

When my house was built I worked alongside the builder to learn as much as I could about construction. If I had this book during that time it would have been a great help since there are areas discussed in the book that my builder never mentioned but obviously a top home inspector would know about. I didn't realize that building codes are only the minimum standards my builder had to oblige by during the home construction. This book opened my eyes to what my builder could have done to go beyond the minimum standards.

This is a great reference for my ongoing maintenance and any repairs needed for my home since this book covers all the topics in detail. There are hundreds of helpful photographs with detailed descriptions of what problems or postive aspects are shown in the photos and how to inspect them in your own home. There is a complete index so I can reference any section I need to without having to search through the 400+ pages to find exactly what I want to know about.

If you need an outstanding reference book for house inspections then this is the one to get!

Learn the flaws to look for in a home

The primary purpose of this book is to help you become an effective inspector of homes, but the audience is much broader than that. If you own a home or are thinking about buying one, then you should read it. It will help you develop that critical, discerning eye concerning what to look for in spotting flaws in a house.
I spent almost eight years as a construction worker, six where I was the foreman, and have performed many repairs to my own homes. And yet, there was much in the book that I was unaware of. It was a learning experience for me, and it will be for you. Unless you find the perfect house or are already an expert, buying this book and reading it will be time and money that will be returned many times over.

Excellent Book! We use this to train our home inspectors.

I have several dog training books but I was looking for a book to deal with the most frustrating problems. In my case, barking. For others, biting. The author's useful advice? "Seek out a board certified veterinary behaviorist, a Ph.D behaviorist, or a certified animal behavior consultant to help you resolve the issue." Gee, thanks.

Darlene Arden does it again!

This is a very informative and entertaining book chock full of outstanding and helpful information for dog owners.

I am a trainer and behavior consultant and most of us in the business know that parents and family members often do not listen to us when we offer advice, even though there is no fee (perhaps especially when there is no fee)! SO I bought this for my mother and I am quite sure she will *listen up* to Darlene!

Thank you again, for a great book, Darlene Arden. Each time you deliver sound advice.

"I recently attended the The Greenwich Kennel Club Dog Show and I happen to meet Ms. Darlene Arden. She certainly is an approachable and most delightful person. I purchased her book "Rover Get Off Her Leg". Thinking it would be a "light read".

For such a small compact book, it contains a powerhouse of the basic information, a strong foundation along with insightful suggestions for dog ownership and their dogs. Her stories and examples run from the hysterical laughter to sadness, yet always `right on topic and practical.

An excellent read, even for this old dog like myself"

Rover, Get Off Her Leg is a must read for everyone ecept the very seasoned dog trainer. Written in a fun, conversational way, Arden imparts some of the best information around. Written so that once you've read the first chapter you can read the whole book...or just skip to the section that addresses your problem. Using only a positive method (no dominance or fear techniques), Arden can help you solve just about any problem. Even if you don't have a problem you may learn some new things, anyway. I'm involved in rescue and I recommend this book to EVERYONE who adopts a dog. I've got a lot of dog training books, but this is the one I find myself going to over and over.

You have to work

This book clearly spells out how the distribution industry is changing, which is network marketing. Network marketing is simply a distribution channel from the manufacturer to the consumer. WalMart and Amazon are excellent examples of this. Have you ever recommended a good restaurant to a friend? You're a network marketer and the restaurant just gained a new client without advertising.
Where people go wrong and then share their 'bad' experience is that they don't WORK. One can't just register with a company, occasionally discuss it, wimp around and not do the work. In my 6 years of successful experience, I have found that those who 'fail' didn't do the work and quit. If you fail to show up for your job, you'll lose your job.
My only reason for rating this 4 stars is that some of it is written in language/concepts that are hard to grasp by those who have never been in network marketing.
Have an open mind and you'll see the Network Marketing profession as a profession!

Having been a veteran in network marketing for now over 30 years, I had the opportunity to build businesses through Wave 1 and Wave 2 and Wave 3. They were the difficult days. Wave 3 was better but now as we enter Wave 4, look out. The Tidal Wave is coming.

Network Marketing has finally come of age. And while it is not fully accepted by the general public yet (when it does, it will be too late) the business is easier now than ever.

Wave 4 explains where the industry has been but even better, where it is going. The combination of the internet with network marketing will provide a Tidal Wave of opportunity for those perceptive enough to get involved.

I see some people have a negative attitude towards MLM/Network marketing and a few have been burned. That is understandable. MLM/Network marketing is like any other business. While we have many good, hard working honest people, there are also some corrupt, take the money and run kinds as well. That is why it is more important than ever to carefully check the company you are looking to get into.

Wave 4 offers some insight on what to look for in a company. It tells success stories and profiles companies that are doing extremely well. If you are one of those people who thinks that MLM/Network Marketing is illegal, or a pyramid scheme, you definitely need to read Wave 4 and get with the times.

Network Marketing is the wave of the future. Get on board or watch it pass you by!

Millions of people in America and around the world have a dream of starting their own business but seem to lack the knowledge or the capital or both. Network marketing offers the opportunity to thrive in the home based business economy of the 21st century.

In WAVE 4 you will learn:

>What Network Marketing Is

>Why it is Hotter than Ever

>How You Can Ride the Wave to Financial Freedom

Like Michael Dell discovered in the computer business, the key to success is direct, direct, direct. Thanks to the internet, it is now easier than ever to succeed in network marketing. Easier, faster, and better.

Unless you are online and networking, you may find yourself in an unemployment line and not working. Network Marketing is truly the wave of the future and WAVE 4 explains it better than any other book I have ever read.

WAVE 4 is split into 12 parts, 40 chapters and 300 pages. My favorite chapter is called "The Tidal Wave" Richard Poe is an outstanding writer and without a doubt, the best voice network marketing has ever had or has. I highly recommend WAVE 4 to anyone who wants to achieve exciting financial goals in the 21st century!

The essence of this book is to educate the homeowners to thoroughly prepare for their projects BEFORE embark on their projects. The author presented in a logical way how to make the required preparations. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because I wish more resources on technical ascpects of building/renovation are provided.

Excellent first (or second) source for working with contractors
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2009-06-03
Over the last fifteen years, I've (barely) survived one disastrous whole house renovation and lived through two lesser projects. As you might imagine, when I decided I was going to buy and renovate another house, I knew I needed to do a better job at managing the process. After going through at least a dozen books of varying quality on working with contractors, I was very happy to find "What Your Contractor Can't Tell You" (WYCCTY). Here's why:

Most books on contractor management fall into one of two categories, highly technical or highly adversarial, and for me, neither is really on the mark. I don't want to *be* a contractor, I want to hire and manage one. I am also not interested in spending six months circling a contractor like we are about to knife fight. WYCCTY avoids both extremes, making the contractor-client relationship about business and your job as a client about protecting your interests appropriately. This is as it should be and the book describes dozens of ways of doing so, all which fall into the category of good project management practice.

That means you will be reading a lot of stuff on contracts, project budget tracking, schedules and making design decisions. There are good chapters on how to read and evaluate schedules and budgets and excellent chapters on contracts and change orders; the latter are especially helpful if you are new to construction or renovation.

If you have managed projects (construction or otherwise) you will discover that you know most of what you need to know and the book will be a reference for you. If you have not managed projects before, you will quickly see that you have two choices: get educated on the tools and skills needed or hire a good project manager to do the job for you. This makes the book really useful for someone new to renovation or project management.

The author focuses on the contractor and construction part of renovation and while it does have chapters on working with architects, they aren't as detailed or helpful as the rest of the book. If you haven't been through that process before, you'll need other resources to really learn about it.

This won't be the only book I will use during my upcoming project but it will certainly be one of three or four that I have quite near at hand. I highly recommend it for the project savvy as a reference and for the beginner as a way to decide whether or not your renovation project management is something you want to dive into.

This book was easy reading and was recommended by Amazon after I bought another book on owner building. If you are hiring a contractor, this may be the book for you, but if you are contracting the home yourself, ie: built by owner with you being the general contractor, this book is not the one to buy.

I came across this book when I was in my first drug treatment center at 17. I lost the book through the course of events that happened in my life, but a few months ago it crossed my mind. I was trying to decide what gift I could give my children, whom I put up for adoption several years ago. I wanted somthing that reflected the depth of the wisdom I had gained through my jouney. I cannot write my children, but I thought of this book and how much it stated what I really wanted to say to them. I bought another copy for me, so that I can be reminded of the beautiful truth contained in the message, and one for my children. I am so grateful that I came across such a wonderful book!

Outstanding niche cook book. When I began making my own yogurt a couple years ago, I looked for a cook book that provided recipes for using my yogurt beyond just adding fruit and cereal. This book hit the mark. It is well organized with categories for appetizers, soups, salads, fish, meat, and poultry. There are even recipes for breads and desserts. The instructions are clearly written and I have tried several in each category.

A while ago, the Joy of Cheesecake was a best seller. Now we have varied our tastes and complexities of cooking. This is a comprehensive book that carefully describes the uses and creation of yogurt. There are many wonderful recipes & ideas

Yogurt has many wonderful uses. The taste of yogurt is very adaptable-both as sweet & savory. Add it to smoothies, soups, put a dollop on your potatoes, marinate meats like chicken & lamb. Some might say- Yum-O!

Yogurt is also extremely healthy-an excellent source of calcium, the health-conscious weight watcher's friend. Help to combat osteoporosis, obesity, GI complaints, skin problems, etc.

You can use yogurt as a great substitute for creams & sour creams. Use in dips & sauces.

Got this book to accompany a yogurt maker-Certainly this book is worth five stars!!!

Spiritual adoption

Review Date: 2009-02-10
I cannot imagine the heart-breaking anguish three-year-old Robbie experienced as he realized that his mother had left him in care in an American orphanage. With no determined or date of return, his mother drifted in and out of his life as he struggled to grasp hold of any sense of normality, security, or love.

Though some form of stability was provided by regular visits from his maternal grandmother and a caring housemother, the deep emotional wounds left by parental abandonment led to feelings of deep rebellion, anger, and dejection. Once his mentally ill mother gave up her parental rights Robbie held out hope that his wealthy paternal relatives would adopt him. Their rejection cut him to the quick and plunged him into a state of desperation during his teen years.

Castaway Kid chronicles the autobiographical reflections of author R.B. Mitchell, who spent nearly his entire childhood in care within an orphanage. Writing in simple, strikingly transparent prose, Mitchell lays bare the wounds created by repeated abandonment and rejection by his family. His would be a truly heart-rending story were it not for an adoption that came once his childhood years were passed.

Mitchell was adopted into the family of God, accepting the Father's promise to be home for him; to provide him with a never-faltering source of love, stability, and identity. Guided by His spirit through the process of deep forgiveness for those who forsook him, Mitchell was able to move forward into a new life including a wife and children as he learned to trust and love. Coming from an orphanage with dismal outcomes for its long term residents, Mitchell's life stands out as wildly successful. A college graduate and participant in international missions, Mitchell is now a well established financial consultant and motivational speaker.

The icing on the cake in any autobiography are photographs of the author. Castaway Kidprovides pictures of the author's family, from his childhood, of the orphanage he called home, his college years, and his own family. I rejoice for the work that God has done in the author's life. Thankfully everyone can experience the personal love of the creator of the universe, whether orphaned, empty or confused, His free grace available to all comers.

Life in an orphanage is no longer a cultural reality here in North America, but remains a fact of life for millions of children worldwide. Though Mitchell never draws parallels between his life as a castaway kid and that of today's domestic and international orphans, one can't help but make the connection. God's heart is one of adoption, of love and of reconciliation. The story of Mitchell's life brings the emotional desolation these beloved children experience into sharp focus and embodies the spirit of adoption that God longs to engender in his followers. While Mitchell may be one of the last "lifers" from the American adoption system, we should remember the children waiting for families in foster homes and orphanages worldwide.

Castaway Kid: One Man's Search for Hope and Home (Focus on the Family Books)

This book is amazing. I work in a school with much racial, religious, financial and ethnic diversity. This book was the center of our summer reading program. Rob's life was such a great example for our children who face discrimination that they too can be successful regardless of what others say to them. In addition, my husband and I found things in the book we could relate to as well. My favorite part was Rob's argument with God.

It doesn't matter who you are or how you were raised, you will relate to some part of Rob's life. This is a book you will love and one you will want to share with everyone you know!!

We were fortunate to have Mr. Mitchell visit our school after all of our students had read Castaway Kid as their summer reading assignment. His connection with our community was immediate and deep. All of us can relate to feeling abandoned at some point in our life. And in walks this gentle man who has every reason in the world to be hard and bitter. If God can give Rob Mitchell the courage to forgive, that same courage is certainly available to me!

This is a great bible for youth or even adults who want to read the bible. It has many wonderful special features like "did you know?" boxes that provide background from biblical scholars written in corresponding chapters. This is a bible that can be picked-up, read and understood by anyone. It is a "must have" if you are Catholic and have children.

I love the layout of this Bible and the little additions the editor has made. There are little boxes throughout that include various things to think about and how to put the stories from the Bible into our own personal lives. I really love this Bible and that's probably one of the reasons my church uses it for ALL of our youth!

One area that is rarely considered when you think of going green is celebrations. From baby showers to birthday parties, it's easier to consider green alternatives, especially if you have a copy of the book Celebrate Green!

Overall, the book is an easy read. It's broken down into sections with clear headers, bullet points and call-outs along the margins. Best of all, the book offers low-cost or no-cost ideas as well as recipes. What I really liked (and a key aspect of many of the tips and information that I provide on my blog), these are easy, simple ways to go green. This is key to sticking with anything.

I loved the statistics throughout the book, which really hit home. For example, the book talks about how much paper is thrown away from greeting cards and wrapping paper, and it offers alternatives that are no-brainers.

There are many unique ideas that I learned about for the first time, such as hybrid grills, which use primarily solar power and electricity as a back-up energy source.

Other green celebrations to consider include Halloween, which is where the mother-daughter author team got their start and inspiration for the book. They offer numerous alternatives to giving out candy to trick-or-treaters. As a mom who's concerned with their children's health, who doesn't want to give something other than candy?

As a committed New Years Resolution setter, I loved the idea of green New Years Resolutions. What a great way to improve yourself and make a positive impact on the environment.

While a few celebrations come to mind when you think of parties and gatherings, this book covers the gamut, including graduations, anniversaries, family reunions and office parties. Best of all, at the end of the book is a HUGE list of green resources, which are mentioned throughout the book. In addition, there's also a glossary that provides clear explanations about terms such as biodegradable and earth-friendly (there is a difference, by the way).

I absolutely love this book! I am so grateful to have a resource book to turn to when the holidays come around. I have been searching for a guide to help me and my husband educate our daughters about alternative ways to celebrate traditions and holidays! I think it's wonderful to share these new ideas with them and believe that we are all helping our families, and our environment by making some necessary changes. We feel that by incorporating these fun ideas into our lives, we can be an example to our friends and family that there are many ways to have fun while making conscious choices!

This is one of the best "green" books I've ever read - not only does it help people have eco-friendly holidays and special events, but it gives new ideas for parties. I was desperate for an activity for my 1st grader's class Halloween party and "Celebrate Green" suggested doing the limbo at parties. I thought why not and they loved it! In fact, we did it at their Christmas party and will do it again at Valentine's Day. Thanks Lynn & Corey!!!!

Celebrate Green! is an encyclopedic tool that helps readers authentically integrate healthy holidays and other celebrations with personal health and planetary stewardship. Too often, we forget about the planet when we celebrate birthdays, weddings and holidays but if this jewel of a planet is to survive, each of us must remember that every act we perform directly connects us with a conscious effort to either help heal our environment or an unconscious act of perpetuating the destructive lifestyles that a consumptive culture has unleashed on the world. Celebrate Green! makes doing the right thing easy.

In November, 2008, thousands of Seattle children, teens and adults as well as major local sponsors began what has now become a movement when the first Green Halloween was celebrated. From Seattle, Green Halloween® went national in 2008 and from Halloween grew to encompass every holiday, through two websites, www.GreenHalloween.org and www.CelebrateGreen.net which promote year round eco-conscious holidays, as well as their great book.

In Celebrate Green!, Corey & Lynn provide readers with a window on the how's and whys of eco-conscious holidays and celebrations of every kind so that we can become earth stewards each time we gather for an occasion. Celebrate Green! offers us hundreds of great eco ideas for almost every holiday and celebration including Easter, Earth Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, baby showers, graduation, weddings and more that include many free activities, positive community actions, delicious healthy holiday-themed recipes, and great websites for sourcing eco-friendly holiday related green products.

In short, Celebrate Green! is a priceless resource that belongs in the library of every new paradigm reader and would make the perfect gift for the eco-conscious friends and family on any holiday shopping list.

My daughters (aged 5 and 7) have loved this book - it has led to long discussions about geography, culture and the ways in which people live. We have written stories about the children in the pictures, and pored over the globe. This book has depth and is an invaluable way of deepening children's engagement and interest in other cultures. We did smile over some minor inaccuracies in the NZ page (not many children in NZ live with their gradnparents!) - but do not hesitate to buy this book for your children and grandchildren. And be prepared for hours of discussion and engagement!

This is a great book. I enjoy it thoroughly, and so does my 4.5 year old daughter. During the Olympics, she has asked for it every night. She loves finding out about the other children and looking at the pictures. It is one of the best multicultural books I have seen. It does not focus on other cultures as historical curiosities or emphasize their differences. Instead, it provides a snapshot of what each child's life is like (parents, home, school, friends, etc.). It shows what is different while emphasizing common everyday life vs. festivals and traditions. It sparks her curiosity (why does that girl paint her face and body, etc.). The book can't begin to answer those questions, but that's what the internet is for.

My 6 year old loves reading this book. It shows how children around the world dress, live, and play. It is interesting to see what other children like to do for fun, or what they like to eat. It is also teaching her about the different countries around the world.

This awesome book shows children around the world and what their everyday life is like (homes, schools, families, pets, friends, churches, food). Having a daughter adopted internationally, this book helps us learn more about her birth country and about all the children of the world. We've started giving this as birthday gifts to her friends.

I hope that all children can someday enjoy this book with their friends and caring adults. It makes real the lives of children all around the world - their hopes, their dreams, their families and their daily routines. It's a delight to see our similarities and a great lesson to learn about our differences. Thank you to the authors and publishers.
