This is a user friendly book to have close at hand. If you're like me I am always looking at ways to incorporate colors, designs and arts and crafts style into our 1922 Chalet Arts and Craft's home. I especially appreciate all the colorful pictures and the textiles shown. Paint, stenciling and wallcoverings being modest in cost and are realistic changes that are indeed affordable. Lots of ideas and examples to pull a room together. I refer to the book frequently and I am pleased I bought it.

As an educator I enjoy using this book in my classroom. I have used it with second, third and fifth graders as it also compliments our state standards. It is refreshing to see an ABC book that is great for older children. The illustration are beautiful and the vocabulary used has a wide range of difficulty for English language learners as well. I own one of the other books in this series and will be purchasing many more to get a complete set. I just love them!

We received this as a gift when our son was born. We loved it so much we have started collecting all of the "Discover America State By State. Alphabet Series" books. While our son is way too young to appreciate the artwork and history the rhyming is great and have found these to be great before bed and naptime books. We look forward to expanding our "Alphabet Series" library as our son grows.

I really like this book. It's been in my 5-year-old's collection for about 2 years now, and it still get pulled down and read every few weeks.

Devin Scillian has done a fantastic job of using events and facts from just about every imaginable facet of American life, both well-known and obscure. For example, the book mentions the YMCA, Harriet Tubman, "The Twilight Zone", Kellogg's Rice Krispies, Hoover Dam, and egrets. That's on top of many major cities, states, and historical events.

The book layout features a very interesting two-tiered system. The main flow of the book is carried by a series of 4-line verses, one per letter. This portion is suitable for reading to pre-readers. Along the sides of each page, relevant factoids are given, further illuminating the main verse. This makes the book hold appeal for older readers, probably even up to 4th or 5th graders.

Pam Carroll's well-drawn illustrations are very "busy", but not in a bad way; my boy enjoys hunting for all the listed items. Adults can get a chuckle noticing the curious juxtapositions, such as Huck Finn reading a Hemingway novel on the "H" page, or, on the "N" page, Norman Rockwell painting Neil Armstrong, while both are on the moon.

I found this book to be an utter delight. Highly Recommended.

This book crams too many bizarre things onto its pages. Also I didn't think the author used the best choices for some of the letters. I was very disappointed when I saw this book since it had gotten good reviews. I advise getting "America is.." (Borden/Schuett) instead.

The Final Word of Clutter and Space Management!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2009-06-15
I've read everything out there on clutter and space management and this is by far the best that's been written. This teaches "streamlining" as opposed to "organizing". They tell you to get rid of things first, then organize what's left. They give specific ideas on what to do with spaces. It's witty, clear, and concise. Each chapter is a different area or room in the home, so if you don't have that room or area, you can skip that chapter. It first came out in 1985--so you know the authors are hitting a nerve and delivering solid answers, or it wouldn't have been around so long.

Keep referring back to this book!

I love this book! It was the first book on organization I ever purchased, and I wouldn't be without it. It makes the awesome task of decluttering your entire home very manageable. The process is broken into easy steps, and once you get going, you can't believe you lived with clutter all your life prior to buying this book. I've read many other books, but this one is one of the best. I do have one caution. The first time I read the book, and went through the process, I followed every "rule." Basically, their motto is, "Get rid of everything you don't use, like, have room for, need or want." I got rid of binoculars (because I hadn't used them up to that point), a set of ivory dominoes (that I didn't know were ivory, until after I sold them,--because I didn't play dominoes), an antique 1 cent NYC parking meter (because it was my husbands before we got married, and we lived in a small apartment, and I had know emotional attachment to it, etc. So there are some things you keep, just because, even if you don't need them or think you don't have room.

This book was a huge help. They help you to look at EVERY area of your home. The book is laid out very simple and you can skip over the chapters that don't pertain to your own home. They did offer some advice that I don't agree with (I don't agree with getting rid of EVERYTHING) and the idea of hanging drawstring bags on the inside of every closet door?? (I think that sounds a little tacky.) But, other than that this book is a quick read, which is helpful so you can get started right away! I defintly recommend this book to anyone trying to get organized!

This book will show you how to deal, once and for all, with chronic clutter, lack of space, and the irritating lost-and-found pattern in your home. This book will show you how to put your home in order and keep it that way. The authors have added one vital step, not normally found in a book of this type. They show you how to find more places to put stuff by simplifying first, then organizing.

Learn of the authors easy eight-step system for simplifying any room in your house.
Step 1. Prepare your family
Step 2. Collect containers
Step 3. Work in a clockwise pattern
Step 4. Evaluate and assign
Step 5. Ask yourself the right questions
Step 6. Group and store like items together
Step 7. Use memento boxes for sentimental items
Step 8. Enjoy the empty space

On your mark, get set, go .... It is best to purchase this book as a household reference book. Copies are currently available on Amazon at under $4.

Reverting back to my comments on Mr. Daily's( Tax Savvy For Small Businesses) and Mr. Kamoroff's(A Small time Operator)reviews, this book coupled with the two previously mentioned books, should provide an outstanding foundation to start off with, as far as what you should and must do to operate a small business when it concerns your tax liability.

This books concentration is based more on past precedents passed down by both the Appeals Courts and the Tax Courts, and what procedures can and cannot be implemented. Gives specific instruction in accordance with the IRC code, to follow and to determine what can be done to legally lower your tax liability.

This book is more legally technical than both books I mentioned above. While Daily's book gives you general examples of accounting procedures and legalities, Kamoroff book gets into the nuts and bolts of accounting procedures, along with a step by step guide to implement those procedures. These 3 books should be on every entrepenuer's shelf, for future reference and procedures.

A Grand Southern Read !!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-08
Few southern authors truly manage to capture the rhythm and flavor of southern life. Kezi Matthews has done it! Her voice rings so true, page after fabulous page.

Young Memphis Riley, motherless and unwanted by her next of kin, carries the burdens of a harsh and cruel world upon her fragile shoulders. Bearing the pain of abandonment, Memphis arrives on her grandmother's doorstep and struggles to find her place in a home that has no love to spare. The story unfolds in a tumultuous storm of anger and sweltering bitterness.

[excerpt] "My guitar!" she yelled. "Mine!" Her stiff, misshapen words flew at me on a thick spray of saliva. Then she turned and stomped down the steps. She was twenty-nine years old, but small and angular as a child. I watched her march across the yard and out of sight down the road, the tail of her ratty old coonskin cap flipping around as though it was still alive.

Her spittle clung like snail spoor to the outside of the screen. A fly circled the wet strings, then took off as I began to beat against the doorframe with my fist. This time she'd gone too far--way too far. [end of excerpt]

Kezi Matthews weaves a spellbinding tale of innocence and sobering reality in this debut novel. Her memorable characters will tug at your heartstrings and pierce the solitude of every silent moment, long after the final page is read.

_John Riley's Daughter_ is an excellent choice for a teen's personal collection. My copy is proudly shelved next to Ruth White's _Belle Prater's Boy_ and Kimberly Willis Holt's _My Louisiana Sky_, all three deserving of multiple reads.

What a wonderful choice for a classroom read-aloud--a great selection for both teens and young adults! Order a copy of this engaging novel into your home, and don't forget to order one for your local librarian. She'll thank you for it!!

I came across this book when my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness. It really helped me to be comforted with the whole "dying" process. He had a VERY difficult time accepting his fate. He was angry, scared, sad....just not at all ready to go. My brother started reading this book to him at his bedside in Hospice. He couldn't communicate by then, but I hope and pray he was touched by this book so much that he began to be "ok" with his impending "transition". I know it helped me A LOT! How could I be sad when I knew he was going to be with the Lord? I wish this culture was one that actually celebrated death, rather than mourning it. It would make the process much easier for everyone. I think EVERYONE should read this book. Everyone is touched by death and everyone is going to die. Christian or not, I think Bill Brights experience is a great example to others on how to accept death.

This is one of those books where the minute you pick it up and read the first page, you had to finish it. Bill Bright is truly one of God's faithful servants; choosing to live a life that is selfless and full of integrity as a "slave" of God. The book gives you a glimpse into the last few years of his life as he battled pulmonary fibrosis. He finished his work on earth with the utmost joy and no one can capture what he went through better than the man himself. The book also sheds light into his wife, his children, and his ministry.

It's amazing that not more people know about Bill Bright. He started the Campus Crusade for Christ ministry and has made several films including the JESUS film which has been seem by over 5.5 billion people. He also came up with the 4 spiritual laws gospel among other outreach materials. Through Bill's ministry, millions of people have come to accept Christ. I didn't know about Bill Bright either until this year as I was going through my own struggles in life. Reading his book and seeing how he finished his life with joy and the blessing he left to those around him brought so much hope and encouragement to my life. It also showed me a better picture of who God really is and how He blesses the life of those who love Him. You must give this book a read.

Part of my management consulting involves helping people develop an understanding of how and why conflict happens. This book is now required reading for all my clients as it lays out in an easy to read and entertaining way the fundamental understandings of how some people choose to see themselves in the world. Feedback I have received is that it is informative, funny, relevant and definately worth spending the time reading and rereading. And I agree. One leadership team has made it mandatory reading for the entire company. I think it is a must read and reread book.

This book does an excellent job of presenting sophisticated
ideas in an accessible and practical way. There is a constant
interchange throughout between theory and practice. Early in
the book we are introduced to the employees of a fictitious
and often dysfunctional company, appropriately and humourously
named Turm-Oil. These characters then serve as the cornerstone
for exploring various conflicts and processes for their
resolution. I found this approach particularly effective, since
the more these conflicts are revisited from different angles,
and from the points of view and interests of the protagonists,
the more understandable and resolvable they become. Although
the main examples of conflict resolution are drawn from this
organizational group, the necessary skills and approaches are
seen to be readily transferable to conflict within family groups
or any other social context. This is a book which manages to
be useful and instructive in a practical and entertaining way.
I recommend it wholeheartedly.

The joy of conflict resolution? Conflict is something most of us either avoid or confront in unproductive ways. No wonder the result is anything but joyful. Thankfully there's a better way and this light-hearted and easy to read book shows us how. Gary Harper is a brilliant facilitator and mediator whose training sessions are as much fun as they are insightful. He brings these same qualities to his first publishing effort.

The Joy of Conflict Resolution helps us to understand what lies beneath our own attitudes about conflict. It lets us step outside of the emotional grip of conflict and reassess our actions objectively. As a result, we are able employ solutions that meet our own needs and respect all involved. This is a must-read for anyone wanting to learn to navigate conflict and come to resolutions that are, well, positively joyful.

I bought this book because I had just upgraded my computer to one with Windows Vista and wanted to learn the ins and outs quickly. It's been such a great tool in learning all of the new things I can now do!

Also, I teach introductory class online for first time college freshman, most of whom are older, non-traditional students, that covers study skills and basic computer skills (such as surfing the internet and attaching files to emails). Because they're just starting their college careers, many of them are looking at buying new computers and I've recommended that they all purchase this book to help them pick out and use their new computers.

Excellent Book!!

I found out about this book after a friend referred me to it. I'm not the most technical, but was able to understand everything he discussed. He took the time to explain everything in a way that made complete sense. My computer is getting pretty old, and I'm just about ready to get a new one. I'm sure I'll have this book right at my side when I get it and to help me move everything to the new computer!

I would definitely say that this book is worth it if you're looking for a little help on your computer

I've been using Windows XP for years now and just got a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium on it. There's definitely a big difference between those two versions of Windows! I've become very good at using XP, but wanted to make sure that I got Windows setup right and wasn't missing anything. I looked at a couple Vista books and I'm happy that this was the book I chose. It's very straight-forward and to the point and leaves out a lot of the over-technical garbage that most home users wouldn't even care about. The author does, however, hit on everything I needed to get my computer running right. He discusses the specifics of the security software to run (like comparing different vendors) and he talks about some of the options for configuring backups (including some of the newer online backup services... this was excellent!).

I will also say that I already needed one of the chapters when my computer wouldn't boot up. I had a similar problem a couple years ago on my XP computer and HP had me reload the whole computer. I'm glad I thought to check this book first because I came to find out that there are some MUCH easier options in Windows Vista and was able to get back up and running in about ten minutes! So, that in itself made this a great purchase in my opinion - I probably saved a couple days worth of time in that alone!

Great book and definitely worth it!

I liked this book so much, I ordered another copy through Amazon to be sent to a dear friend, I met at the Redgreen lodge. I am waiting for the chance to see the documentary on most of our PBS stations again. Or Discovery, whatever they show it on. In either case, a good read for just about anytime. thanks, paul

Wonderful book by Salwey...took me back to a simpler, down to earth time. Kenny weaves a profound story of man and nature.
