This book has a thorough description of symptoms related to various diseases and then offers helpful suggestions on what one can do to treat a specific disease. Using this guide I was able to suspect I had Celiac's disease and so I ordered the blood work on my own. Sure enough the results came back positive for Celiac's.

I found this book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, very useful and complete. It's a great resource guide to nutritional healing. Her organization and presentation of the material is so easy to read. In part one she offers the basic building blocks of health, (nutrition, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, engymes, herbs, natural foods, etc.) In the second part of her book, she lists a fairly complete listing of the disorders with descriptions of each and the remedies and therapies, and in the last part of her book she summarizes various other alternative therapies (like aryuvedic medicine, the use of music and sound, blood purification, color therapy, the use of crystals, the use of magnets, exercise, yoga, and hormonal treatments, and she also includes a nice listing of pain management alternatives. I love the no-nonsense, quick reference organizational quality and especially how informative it is for a lay person and how she sometimes offers not just one or two modalities of remedies or therapies, but several. She also indicates her favorite, good quality products that one can purchase at most quality health food stores. While there are some products that will need to be ordered online or directly from the company, her suggestions are rich and varied and one is bound to find what one needs.

There's also a nice quick reference section towards the front of the book around/approximately page 70-110 that list various herbs and their uses. Although, I'd like to see this section much expanded to include more of the listed herbs' uses, but also to include many more herbs listed as well, along with any 'warnings' on all the herbs too.

She has a nice glossary at the back, plus generous listings of product mfg and distributors, medical and health organizations, and a strong index.

I'd like to see her ad more illnesses and disorders and go into greater depth on some of the ones that she lists that are currently somewhat abbreviated. I'd like to see an even stronger glossary, and for the index to be updated.

Nevertheless, this is a great book to have, whether one is just learning or is an informed reader about natural and alternative remedies. I highly recommend it. Buy it.

Anymore, it's hard knowing how to treat or prevent physical or medical problems, be it the common cold or chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. I stumbled by accident upon this book and have slowly been making my way through it (It's 869 pages!).

I view the book as a 'starter' for many conditions, rather than one that has definitive and detailed advice or recommendations. That's not a bad thing, but it means the reader will need to do a bit more research on some of the supplements/herbs/treatments that are recommended. As an example, the author frequently suggests Colloidal Silver (for everything from ear infections to rattlesnake bites). If you look this up online, however, there is a HUGE split between the traditional and non-traditional health/medical communities as to whether this is safe to use. Granted, this isn't uncommon, but it's particularly prounonced with this supplement.

Anyhow, the book is well-organized and covers a lot of topics. If you have a certain condition and have looked into common causes and treatments, this book probably won't tell you more than you already know. But if you're looking for a good overview of how to treat a whole variety of conditions, this is a great book.

Excellent Book-A must have!

I have an older edition of the Prescription for Nutritional Healing Book for years and it is such a life saver for me. Prescription drugs never work for me due to the dangerous side effects. This book has saved me many times and not only did it teach me about nutritional healing, it also has excellent recommendations for vitamins, supplements and herbs that helped me to nurture myself back to health. So, I decided to buy this latest edition and it has all the necessary updates that I needed. It truly is a good buy and a must have!

This is one of those great books that can reach across all interest groups and walks of life. The way the author relates his personal stories to shed light on horse training really drew me in. But, not only do these stories relate to dealing with animals, they are like Easop's fables... there is a nugget of wisdom to be taken away and stored for you to use dealing with people and struggles in everyday life. He has great insight into behavior of those around him, not only the horses, but the wisdom of the old man. We could all learn something from this book and I'll definitely buy his other books. I had to doctor a sick calf just a few days ago, and I used some of the patience and techniques he uses on the horses, and I felt like the calf whisperer! Instead of it being a grueling chore in freezing weather, I really started to feel a sense of accomplishment that I was helping an animal.

It is hard to find people in my local horse world who don't believe that a firm hand (or boot) is the way to train horses. It was very refreshing to read about Rashid's successful training without physical abuse. I've been using many of his ideas to work with my donkey and have been so proud of the results. Thank you Mark Rashid!

Mark Rashid is amazing. Can't say enough about his books, ideas and training methods. I've been a horse owner for over 25 years, yet Mark has a way of teaching that still leaves me saying "ahh-HA! I never thought about that!!!". Mark's inspiring books have kept me trying with a Mustang I purchased that everyone else gave up on. If it weren't for Mark, I don't know where my horse would be today. I've purchased this book three times and given away two copies to friends that are also horse owners. Read Mark's books - get inspired - get enthused - and build a better relationship with your horse through understanding the "try". Thanks Mark, for putting things in perspective.

I have always loved Indian food, but I never thought I'd be able to cook any. This book has taught me that I can cook it, my husband will eat it, and most of the ingredients are already in my kitchen! This is a great way to eat more vegetables, because they taste so much more alive using the ingredients and techniques described in this book. 5 Spices, 50 Dishes is THE cookbook that I turn to for inspiration when I'm tired of my usual cooking; I can't recommend it enough.

I just used this book for the first time and I made 2 different dishes from it (Sweet Potatoes with Lemon and Ginger; and Chicken with Cashew Sauce). Although I've only had a chance to make 2 dishes from it, it has won my 5 star vote! The dishes were absolutely savory and delicious. My boyfriend and I couldn't stop talking about it all night and all the next morning!

What's great about this book is that all the ingredients are very recognizable and accessible, although I did have trouble finding mustard seeds (1 of the 5 spices). I'm a terrible beginner cook but I was still able to recognize all the ingredients and able to produce a fantastic dinner. The directions were easy to follow and everything was explained thoroughly. I think it makes a great intro to Indian cooking.

I am not a gourmet chef...heck, I'm not a chef by any definition. I enjoy cooking, but I like dining out more. I say all this to communicate how very feasible it is to cook the dishes in this book. I was looking for something to change up my usual regime of home cooking, and this was exactly what I was looking for!

Thus far my favorite dishes have been the "Simple Cabbage Stir-Fry," "Steamed Cauliflower in Spicy Tomato Sauce," and the "Fire-Roasted Eggplant Raita." I love having a cookbook that gives me different flavors without requiring the purchase of a complete pantry's worth of spices. It's wonderful to have new vegetable sides that practically upstage the main course of the meal!

But my favorite thing about this cookbook is that I think it truly lives up to its promise that it is simple. Nothing in here has been beyond my ability to make and the dish comes out tasting absolutely delicious. All of the dishes I've made will become part of my permanent repertoire!

One of the best cookbooks I've purchased all year! A wealth of information--from growing and caring for your own herbs, to harvesting, storage and usage. There's even a section dedicated to edible flowers and a list of herbs used in desserts. The recipes are fool proof and delicious! My only wish is there were more photos, but that's not enough for me to knock off a star!

I keep coming back to this cookbook again and again. It's probably not for your average cook- I've attending culinary school and have studied cooking for over 10 years- I want to mention this because some of the recipes are time-consuming and require more skill than average. There is a duck with cherry sage sauce recipe that is to die for in this cookbook- a true show stopper that guests talk about years later. It takes all day though because you end up making stock with the duck carcass. It's so well worth it!!! There is an EXCELLENT fall mushroom soup I've made over and over again. I highly recommend the quality recipes here.

The author of this book has a great talent with words. He truly writes stories that tell you the background of the recipes, bringing you the sights and smells and sounds. You can tell that he absolutely loves food in all its forms.

I have really enjoyed this cookbook and have tried several recipes. While some of them have been more "gourmet" than I usually cook, most of the recipes have actually sounded fancier than they are (which is a good thing - I meant they weren't as difficult to prepare as it might appear).

I love to read this book just as much as I enjoy cooking from it. I feel transported to the herb gardens of Seattle when I settle down to read it.

I bought this book for my girlfriend, who is something of a foodie, and she loves it. Every time she's had to look up some obscure spice for one of her new dishes she's always found it, and learned a little something about the spice. Just the other day she found some spice she was looking for and said it saved her lots of time. She's really enjoying reading through the book and finding out about everything she's using, and she really likes the photos of the spices as well. Really good photography.

I'm very happy with this book, and more importantly my girlfriend is too. I think it would be a great book for anyone who likes gourmet cooking. It seems an excellent resource.

It has both good information and beautiful pictures! It give a thorough explanation of the taste, how to purchase, conserve, use and even grow yourself for each herb and spice. For herbs and spices that are more common than others such as basils, thymes, and chili peppers, she introduces several kinds with explanation for each kind, which I really liked. I even found pages on my favorite Japanese herb, shiso.

I'm so glad I ordered this book from the library at the same time as I ordered a mead kit. I'm new to home brewing and decided on mead for a first try, but the "complete instructions" that came with my kit might as well have been written in another language, heh. Thanks to this book and a few helpful YouTube videos, I was able to decipher the steps and make my first batch (can't wait until it's ready to try!).

I also decided to buy a copy of the book for myself, as there are some other recipes and ideas I want to try.

If you're an experienced mead maker already, you may find this basic, but it's a great resource for beginners.

I picked this one up at my local homebrew shop wanting to make non-crappy batches of mead. I've been a homebrewer of beer for the last two years so knowing the basics gave me a good leg up on the "beyond the basics" sections.

I was expecting a nice introduction to the technical science of what happens when you make mead including yeast cycles and strains, spicing mead, and learning the nomenclature. I quickly found that I got much more than I expected. This can easily be called the "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" for meadmakers.

For anyone even remotely interested in meadmaking this is a great place to start. For those that have been doing it a while, this is a great book to take the next step.

Review Date: 2009-06-23
Very detailed information about just about any vegetable imaginable. Goes a little overboard in information for my purposes, however. For example looking up watermelon tells you about growing every variety of watermelon when all i wanted was watermelon basics - I'm not growing any exotic varieties. And for one vegetable gave some historical info including a poem. I'm trying to focus on basics so is a little deep for me. Also would be nice to include a "tips" section for each vegetable. For example I had heard about using black plastic to speed watermelon growth - however not mentioned in book yet pretty common knowledge out there in google land. Book is VERY heavy with hard cover so not the easiest thing to pick up and read. For my needs 4 stars, however if you do want all that much detail you might give it 5.

This is a very informative, well-written book. The first half of the book details how to prepare and maintain a garden, and the second half is an encyclopedia of different plants, telling the history, use, planting tips, and harvesting tips for each.

Living in California, I found myself having to read between the lines in this book; it was written for all the states other than the Southwest. For instance, there is plenty of information about how to create enough drainage and heat for plants--covering rows, raised beds, planter boxes, hills, south-facing, all in detail--and then it says in one sentence that if you live in a dry hot area, use sunken planters and filter the sun. Another example: it says not to water cantaloupe once the fruit are the size of a fist. I found that very alarming until I remembered that this book is written for states where there is actually occasional rain in the summer. Surely the author doesn't intend us to never water a cantaloupe in 100-degree weather with zero inches of rain!

This is an oldie but goodie, listing and describing many, many herbs which are ironically left out of modern herbals (the irony is that this is because of the expansion of herbal education, the curriculum of which
tend to focus on a few dozen common useful herbs) . Much to be learned in the listings here in this materia medica style book, which was one of my very first decades ago, until if fell apart from use and had to be replaced. As a co-reference, this book should be on the shelf of every
herbalist, herb student, and home herb lover, as well as those suspicious of or clueless about herbs, as it will enlighten, educate and tantalize.

I Finally found it!!!

I use to own this book and somehow I lost it. I am a person who likes to use herbal remedies, for illnesses, if they exist. If you are that kind of person too, then this BOOK is for you. It is wonderful. It gives you herbal recipes for almost anything you can think of. From hair loss problems, to high blood pressure, and even obesity. I hope this helps. Oh yeah, if you happen to find a copy of this book, I suggest you get it because there is not another like it.

Whether you want to ease sore muscles, dye a piece of cloth, freshen your breath, or figure out what just sprouted among the pepper plants, this is the first and last book you should reach for. Much of the book is dedicated to identifying herbs and other plants, with line drawings, full descriptions, instructions on which parts of the plant to use for which needs, and medicinal values. However, there is also a convenient dye chart, instructions on cosmetic preparations and even a bit of plant legend and lore. Did you know that the ancient Greeks wore marjoram as wedding flowers? You would if you owned this book! I am here to buy a replacement for my well used 1978 copy, which finally failed to survive its latest move.

In this book, Dr Lust provides a quick reference on every possible herb you could need. The book is very useful as an encyclopedia of herbs and their medicinal uses.

I don't regret buying this book , but I will be looking for something more modern.
The book itself is pleasing to the eye, I like the simple drawings. (old fashioned)
