Bicycling Cuba turned out to be invaluable during our three-week trip to the western part of Cuba. The authors really know what they are writing about. Some of the most interesting and rewarding routes suggested in the book were not on the best maps available. The authors' way of describing the routes kilometer by kilometer was of great help because very often roads were unmarked. At the intersections we had no problems in choosing the right road. The book also contains a lot of other useful information, for example, on accomodation.
We warmly recommend Bicycling Cuba for independent cyclists planning a trip to Cuba.

If you are visiting Cuba in the near future, BUY THIS BOOK. If you think you might tour Cuba,BUY THIS BOOK. If you don't plan to visit Cuba but enjoy reading travel narratives by those who have traveled to exotic places, BUY THIS BOOK. I have just returned from a two week bicycle trip with two friends and can report from experience that Bicycling Cuba is spot-on about everything. The Smiths have many years experience leading bike tours for a large bicycle touring company, so their guide book and route directions are presented as cyclists need and use them. Their routes cover the entire country, and the routes we follwed along the South Coast out of Santiago were accurate to a fault. Everything the Smiths wrote about the terrain, historical sites, social mores, laws, lodgings, and Cuban culture and society proved enormously helpful because everything is written clearly and, most importantly for cyclists, accurately. Anyone planning to tour Cuba by car, train, or bus will also find the book useful. I can't think of anything the Smiths left out, except maybe Fidel's personal telephone number! Europeans and other nationals should not pass up this book because it's in English. Even though written in English they will find the book invaluable. Now that I have been home for a couple of weeks I find myself picking the book up and reading about the places I have been and enjoying them all over again. Bicycling Cuba is about as close to Plato's Ideal Travel Guide as we are likely to see. Congratulations to the Smiths, and if you are thinking about a trip to Cuba, buy Bicycling Cuba. I'll bet you go.

Cycling in Cuba made Easy and Enjoyable

Having never done any cycle touring, speaking very little Spanish and being a middle aged women travelling alone, I thought a few tips and hints and route advice would make my trip a little easier. I found it all and more in "Bicycling Cuba" by Wally and Barbara Smith. Their advice on what to take, where to go, where to stay, and gems to see was unsurpassed.

I had spent three weeks in Cuba previously and had used two guide books. The Smiths' advice, while not replacing a guide book, was the best: succinct, accurate and introduced me to friendly and helpful people. Their three main cycle tours, west, central and eastern Cuba cover the most scenic areas as well as the historic gems of this wonderful country. The route descriptions were accurate, easy to follow and contained good advice about difficulty, water availability, traffic problems and special sites.

The Smiths obviously love Cuba and this comes out in their writing. They include inserts about various social issues, economics and politics -- each fascinating.

I thoroughly recommend "Bicycling Cuba" with no reservations. My only wish is that the Smiths would produce some more books for other countries.

Felt like I'd been looking for this for years. Fred's last work, a cap to an incredible legacy. Never before have I seen to much "meat", so concisely packed and easily understood, in one place. It's a "must" of daily reading. I start and end my days with this little book of incredibly densely packed wisdom in running a business, a family, a life.

Fred Smith urged, "Avoid the authors who are meringue chefs." Trust me, this book is a gourmet smorgasbord.

Scan the 52 chapter titles and the bios of the 52 contributors--and you're hooked. The management morsels are inspired. The leadership lessons are fresh and the spiritual insights are deep. This book is a keeper and would be a treasured gift for family, friends and donors.

Business leader Fred Smith Sr. used his mentoring gift and God-honoring wisdom to motivate and inspire some of the world's most influential people, often over breakfast. Each chapter in this brilliant little book delivers two pages of Smith savvy with a response by the likes of John Maxwell, Ken Blanchard, Philip Yancey, Zig Ziglar, Ruth Stafford Peale, Jill Briscoe, Jay Kesler and family members like Smith's son, Fred, president of The Gathering.

"Flying With the Eagles" (chapter 38), with a response from Charlie "Tremendous" Jones, includes this nugget from Smith. "So early in my business career, I chose six qualities that I wanted to build into my life and I asked individuals who personified each to give me an autographed picture. I framed these pictures, along with Hoffman's Head of Christ at 33 and a mirror. I hung them on the wall in a circle, with the head of Christ on the top, the mirror on the bottom and the others around. I could look at the pictures and at my reflection and determine whether I was growing in these qualities."

Fred Smith Sr. was welcomed into heaven on August 17, 2007. His wisdom remains.

From the very first day I saw "Chef at Home" I was immmediately addicted...this is a book highly recommended for the "can't cook, won't cook" folks like myself, as well as the seasoned pros. Don't leave this book on a coffee table!!!

Every recipe (most of which I have seen created on the show) is easy to follow (there are some ingredients I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole, like mushrooms), and the stories behind them are fascinating. I especially enjoyed the personal tidbits Michael included along the way, and the marvelous photos of him with Rachel and Gabe - wish I had that little boy's palate when I was his age!

Thanks Michael for sharing your life and vision on cooking with your fans.

I find John Donne's poetry distinctly representative of the 17th century. It oscilates from being passionately sexual to passionately spiritual, and every detail seems to have been considered. The poems are augmented by Donne's allusions, but they are still beautiful to read without pondering the deeper meanings.

I prefer the alphabetized format of this collection, since chronology and subject matter are fairly nebulous when it comes to Donne. The endnotes are brief enough for readers looking for something simple, but add enough interest that those with a more scholarly bent will have plenty to play with.

Enjoying poetry that sounds good when read out loud

Review Date: 2006-11-30
Finally, I've found a poet I really like reading. Donne's poems suit me more than Shakespeare's sonnets or Poe's verse, and apart from someone like Yvor Winters, I just don't get modern poetry (apologies to Sylvia Plath fans).

What rings well with me is, well, ringing well! Reading a poem out loud with a bit of drama should just sound good. That's why rap and hip hop can really be considered poetry (well, some rap and hiphop anyway).

A great example of this is Shakespeare's sonnet 129 (The expense of spirit in a waste of shame/Is lust in action; and till action, lust...). Most (not all) of Shakespeare's sonnets are harder to understand than this one, which is why they don't resonate with me as well as I'd like. Donne on the other hand is different; most of what he writes in English sounds good and is immediately understandable.

Not that I understand everything in these poems, there are many contemporary allusions that are lost on me, but there's enough in there that sounds very good to allow me to right away enjoy myself. Here are two great lines, which open the sonnet "Community", to illustrate what I mean by good sound.

Good we must love, and must hate ill,
For ill is ill, and good good still...

There are problems, themselves interesting, that bring discord to a poem. For instance in Donne's England "love" rhymed with "prove" but because today these words don't, a couplet with this rhyme is marred to our 21st century ears.

A personal note: I was in bed reading "Soul Made Flesh" about the discovery that the brain is the seat of consciousness, made by Oxford scholars in 17th century England. I had reached an account of how large audiences of curious onlookers gathered to see doctors perform autopsies. I put the book down and decided to dip into Donne before going to sleep. I flipped out when I read The Damp's opening lines:

When I am dead, and doctors know not why,
And my friends' curiosity
Will have me cut up to survey each part...

Talk about serendipity! Now if I had just read an explanation of these lines in the notes, they would not have meant much to me. But because reading "Soul Made Flesh" had transported me into Donne's England for a few moments, the dramatic effect of the opening was multiplied immensely.

In a nutshell, I find that I love Donne and I recommend this comprehensive easy-to-carry well-annotated edition. My only negative comment is that the editing is a bit unimaginative: the editor places the sonnets in alphabetical order of title simply because there is no accepted canonical ordering... Oh well.

I am greatly enjoying this book. The notes at the end explain some of Donne's more obscure imagery. A potentially controversial choice by the editor was to change the spelling of many words to more modern forms, which makes the poems easier to read at the expense of authenticity. Some people will like that and some people won't. Another odd choice was to list the poems in alphabetical order, instead of grouping them by subject matter or attemp to list them in approxiamte chronolgical order.
Buy this book and enjoy the breathtaking poems. You could do a lot worse with your time.

Wonderful Poetry by a Contemporary of Shakespeare.

This book of poetry is quite wonderful. Donne's imagery and words are truly beautiful. His poetry displays wit, beauty and perception. Donne wrote in the sixteenth century, but his ideas and thoughts were actually quite modern. His work is incomparable when it comes to displaying the feelings and emotions of love and of friendship. Donne's poetry is often referred to a metaphysical, but it is also witty and fun. He was an extremely intelligent man, and this is reflected in his work. At times the poems can be difficult to understand, but it is well worth taking the time to do so since they are so beautiful

Songs and Sonnets, Epigrams, Elegies, Satyres, Letters, The Anniversaries, Divine Poems. These are some of the categories of this collection of Donne's complete works. The volume also has a short life of Donne, and an overall introduction to his poetry.
Donne, is generally considered the greatest of the Metaphysical poets. His two great subjects are Love and Death, and his passionate intellect dares to connect elements of diverse worlds into a rich metaphorical texture of poetic conceits. The bold comparisons , the bringing of all modes of experience into relation with the Divine mark out his truly great work.

Two world authorities compiled this outstanding conifer book featuring 2347 excellent, sharp photos reproduced beautifully on high quality paper. Each picture was taken at the proper distance to show the tree's outstanding detail. Captions are a sentence or two with location often included. For detail use a good companion book such as the Manual of Cultivated Conifers by Krussmann. Imperative for landscapers and a joy for tree lovers -- a bargain at the cover price. A quality book clearly at the top of my list of favorites.

This set of 2 books has an enormous amount of photographs. In fact, what is meant by an Illustrated Encyclopedia is that it is composed solely of photographs. There is no text other than the captions. Photograph quality is generally good, although some are of juvenille specimens and don't show mature form. It is also clear that culture plays a large part in the mature form in many cases, and it would be nice to show various specimens rather than just one. Still, this is an essential resource to have in your library if you want to know about garden conifers. You'll just need additional resources as well.

Sidra Smart has finally received what she wanted---her private investigator license. Approved and fully licensed by the state of Texas, she is now free to investigate anything she wants at anytime and without supervision. The last part is especially important to her as she continues to move on from her former life as a pastor's wife. At 52, she is relishing her new life and now with her license she has extra incentive to get her office rebuilt. After all, "The Third Eye: Intuitive Investigations" can't be run out of Annie's house forever - no matter what Annie thinks.

It's early June in Southeast Texas and Durwood, one of her first clients back when she was being mentored by George Le'ger comes to see her. Durwood's friend, Boo Murphy needs help and Durwood wants Sidra's professional expertise. According to Durwood, Boo goes squirrel hunting in the swamp every day. Supposedly, one day she saw a pirate ship out there in the swamp somewhere. But, that isn't why the Sheriff is going after her. No, the investigation is for murder.

Boo's second cousin, twice removed, and neighbor is Sasha. Sasha had a husband named Zeke who recently made Boo so mad, she fired her gun over his head. She was plenty angry, wanted to scare him, and let loose with her gun. She didn't think any more about it as it wasn't that big a deal. That was until Boo took Sasha out where she said saw the pirate ship and instead they found a very dead Zeke with a shirt of Boo's wrapped around his neck. Obviously, somebody else killed him. Boo is convinced that what she saw out there was the schooner "Hot Spur" one of Jean Lafitte's pirate ships. If she wanted to kill Zeke, she would have, but she didn't and that is all there is to it as far as she is concerned.

But, others don't see it that way. Not only do some think Boo killed Zeke, some folks also think that she found the treasure that legend says was on board the pirate ship. Not only does Sidra need to find that elusive schooner, she also needs to find evidence to clear her client despite the various forces against her. Especially since somebody has taken offense to her interest and keeps trying to kill Sidra.

This third novel in the series picks up quickly after the last one left off with the engaging Sidra Smart. A little more graphic in terms of language and description with each book, Sidra Smart is evolving and shedding more and more of her pastor wife past. While aware of her past mistakes, she is also fully aware of her effect on her new boyfriend and uses all her assets when she wants to. Along with enjoying all the possibilities of her new life, she is a pretty good investigator.

Creating a modern day mystery tale with elements from the colorful history of Texas, recurring characters, plenty of local flavor, Author Sylvia Dickey Smith has penned another very good book in the series. As this is a series with evolving characters, those inclined to read the book should begin with the first novel, "Dance On His Grave" before moving on to the previous book, `Deadly Sins-Deadly Secrets."

A swashbuckling murder investigation plunges an outspoken Texas private eye into hot water.
In Smith's third book (Deadly Sins, Deadly Secrets, 2007, etc.) featuring plucky wannabe detective
Sidra Smart, her heroine learns that she's passed her Texas state board exam and is now a full-fledged
investigator at The Third Eye agency, a business she inherited from her dead brother. It's been a long road
since Sidra abandoned her stagnant, 30-year marriage to a misogynistic preacher to embark on a treacherous,
if liberated, life of a sleuth. Her first case involves Boo Murphy, a poor, backwoods woman accused of
murdering her second cousin Sasha's husband, Zeke, after returning from examining the remains of a
historic schooner nestled in the murky waters of her backyard swamp. Sidra is unsure whether to take on Boo's case, but after she discovers that
George, a private investigator who mentored her, is involved in both the theft of a museum-quality crystal collection and plans to steal the pirate
ship's sunken treasure, she immerses herself in the case. While boating on the water searching for the elusive schooner, the smart female detective
sees the vision of "pirate-queen" Mary Anne Radcliff materializing on the bow of a boat. Later, another pirate ghost, Jean Lafitte, appears to
guide the daring detective to success. Apsychic, a few smuggling plots, long-buried family secrets and a host of snoops all conspire to keep Sidra
from getting Boo free from her jail cell. The dogged detective has her hands full sorting out whether the mystery ship is real, along with keeping
her wedding engagement to boyfriend Ben intact. An early subplot involving a kidnapped and raped woman is left dangling and isn't weaved
into the main narrative with any clarity, but Smith offers a tidy conclusion, rife with good-natured ghostly humor to round out the innocuous
frivolity. Fans of Smith's spicy Cajun mysteries surely haven't seen the last of Sidra Smart.
A kooky, homespun whodunit rich in Southern wit and charm.

DEAD WRECKONING
By Sylvia Dickey Smith

Texas has swamps and bayous? Who knew? Kind of goes against my image of dusty, dry Texas, with the tumbling, tumbling weeds. But I suppose along the coast you would find swamps and bayous. Author Sylvia Dickey Smith has made the area come vividly alive for me, complete with mosquitos, crocodiles or is it alligators, and Spanish moss.

DEAD WRECKONING is an unusual mystery combining the paranormal, a dog, and an older female sleuth, but Sid Smart is no Miss Marple. She is plagued by doubts and insecurities. She left her abusive husband, and the confining world of being a minister's wife, to build a new life as a private detective. Insecure in her new romantic relationship with Ben and unsure of her abilities as a newly licensed PI, she struggles to save her client from being convicted of murder. Boo, an old woman, claims to have found Jean Lafitte's schooner, Hotspur, out in the bayou, but when she and her cousin, Sasha, return the next day the schooner is gone. Instead they find Sasha's husband's body. Since Boo shot at Zeke the day before, Sasha blames Boo and she is arrested. Sid is on the case, uncovering old pirates, modern smugglers, and ruthless treasure hunters. Visiting the scene of the crime she sees a ghost ship, with a beautiful and buxom lady pirate. Later a gentleman out of the 19th century visits her with a cryptic message. Are they ghosts? Real or just illusions? Sid isn't sure and neither are we.

I really liked Sid Smart and all her baggage as she struggles to break free of the old confining church life where her husband demanded that she be the perfect minister's wife. As a former minister's wife myself, I could relate to her hang-ups and. And her relationship with her dog, almost supernatural. Then there are all the colorful, and I do mean colorful, characters. The writing is good, descriptions vivid. It is well edited, grammar and spelling, but I found myself having to re-read passages to comprehend them a few times.

The solution to why Sasha's husband was killed was rather obvious, and surprisingly Sid nor the cops never seemed to consider it as a possibility. But the unraveling of the mystery moved along nicely, going in some interesting directions, and coming to a rousing conclusion. DEAD WRECKONING is a delightful mystery, well worth your time and attention, if you like mysteries with a touch of Southern charm. I certainly hope Sid Smart gets her detective agency rebuilt and there will be many more cases in the future.

This is definitely one book you really won't be able to put down. Make sure your calendar is cleared for a couple of days before you even turn to page 1.

This is the ultimate thriller ride..

I read this book ten years ago and still can't forget the character magda altman! that is the kind of effect this book had on me. Its one of the best thrillers I have ever read and was the first one for me by Wilbur Smith.

Its the ultimate page turner and I read it again few days back, same copy I've had for a decade :)

Don't miss out on this one. Its unfortunate though that the other novels by Wilbur I read weren't as thrilling, maybe coz they are more about adventure whcih is not my piece of cake.

This book is proof that Wilbur Smith is a gifted writer. Like several of his other books, he came up with a whole new set of characters and wrote about issues and geopolitics outside of his native Africa. I just read this book in the year 2000. This book was written a long time ago but still feels like it could happen today. As much as things change, they stay the same. I hope Wilbur gives us another gem soon. I couldn't put this one down.

Fanatastic could not put it down.

Read the book when it first came out. It was one of those thrillers that grabs you on page one and never lets go. I've recommended it to friends for over 10 years but recently have not been able to find it in book stores. It turned me into a big Wilber Smith fan but this was his best. The intrigue and excitment of his plot has stayed with me for over 15 years and it's one of the few books I could read again.

Wonderful book for family going through loss of their cat

This is by far my favorite book for celebrating the life of a wonderful member of the family and dealing with the sadness of their death. I like how it encourages the family to make room for another cat that needs a home. Desser looks like my cat Sadie (pen name in honor of her)who is 84 in kitty years now. The illustrations are wonderful. I think the most important thing is to show your pet you love them everyday, be patient with their health problems as they get older, and that your cat, especially if he or she came from a shelter, would want you to give another cat a chance at a home with a loving family. I think it is a wonderful way to honor them.

This is my most favorite children's book, hands down! It's sweet, humorous, touching and sad --all in one--and the pictures are so beautiful and expressive. We originally borrowed it from the library and as I read it by myself (because I couldn't stop looking at the beautiful pictures) and cried my eyes out remembering all 3 of my dear kitties that have passed on, I knew I had to have my own copy. My four year old daughter loves it as much as I do... and I know she sees our current cat through different eyes now!

If you love this book, then let me suggest the book, "Florence the Goose: A True Story For Children of All Ages." They both share "true stories," animals who change the lives of the narrators immeasurably, a sublimly painful detailing of loss and exquisite artwork!

Our 14-year-old kitty died recently and for my two children, ages 4 and 7, the loss was devastating. I checked this out from the library (along with Cat Heaven, by Cynthia Rylant, another fantastic book) and I cannot believe how much this book helped soothe the pain of her loss. My four year old asked to read it several times a day, and we got to the point where we laughed more as we read it than cried. It's a touching, sweet story, worth every penny.

As my readers may know, I work in the spa retreat industry as the resident Pilates Teacher at the Como Shambhala Retreat at Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos. Right now the big spa buzz word is "Detox". People want detoxifying diets, detoxifying spa treatments, detoxifying products, and detoxifying activities such as Pilates and Yoga. Needless to say, I was more than interested to read a Detox book writtenn by well known PBS personality, bestselling author, and naturopathic doctor Brenda Watson, along with the prominent vascular and gastrointestinal surgeon Dr. Leonard Smith.

"This is the most important book I will write in my career. In June 2006 the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that nearly one-quarter of global disease is caused by environmental exposures... [saying] 'Well-targeted interventions can prevent much of this environmental risk,' saving what could amount to millions of lives every year."

We all know that our environment is full of synthetic and toxic chemicals that we must encounter and try to process every day. Watson begins The Detox Strategy by recommending a lab toxicity screen so that he reader can identify exactly what toxins and how much of them s/he is dealing with. These tests are relatively inexpensive (costs range from $79 to $359) and can be done by mail through analysis of feces, hair, liver function, blood, and/or urine. Hair can actually tell the best story, so is often the preferred sample. She also offers a self quiz for those unable to do the laboratory testing.

While she admits that it is impossible to live in the 21st century and avoid or eliminate toxins altogether, Watson offers attainable goals to limit and manage exposure to environmental toxins while strengthening our bodies' ability to manage such substances.

Her program is a 6 part RENEW-al, composed of steps to Reduce exposure to environmental toxins, Eliminate the toxins currently in the body, Nourish the body's cells to support natural detoxification, Energize the body via exercise and relaxation, and maintenance of Wellness. None of this is crazy and at it's most basic there are small steps that are easy and inexpenive to take and maintain.

For example, we can reduce exposure to toxins through air and water filters, natural non-toxic cleansers and body care products, organic foods, and probiotic and enzyme supplements. We can eliminate toxins already in our bodies through herbal cleansing regimens that involve taking morning and evening herbal cleansing supplements while also drinking lots of water, and if possible adding baths, saunas, and colonics. We can nourish our bodies through eating good whole foods (organic where possible), adding certain supplements known to help strengthen our cells, such as antiixidants, EFAs, amino acids, fiber, etc. Exercise, deep breathing, meditation, and other body-mind practices help us energize. And the combination of these steps leads to wellness.

Watson clearly explains and outlines every step of the process, giving options from the least invasive changes to the most radical. She explains why the changes are important and has done the research to back up her claims. I was prepared to not like this book, thinking it too difficult to implement and riding on the detox bandwagon, but Watson has done a great job of providing complex information in a clear, easy to understand, and most importantly easy to implement manner. Well done!

Easy to read, simple to follow.

This is a great book to introduce people to the concept of toxicity in the body. I am tired of the comment "Well, there's chemicals everywhere, whatya gonna do!" Well, what you need to do is to educate yourself to the realities of the toxic soup that we live in. Alarming yes, but denial will not make it go away. Knowledge is power and the sooner you get on board and learn what you need to do to cleanse yourself, particularly your digestive tract, the better off you will be. Who wants to enter that medical nightmare ?
Brenda Watson is a voice that is finally being heard and I am very happy that she has done the PBS specials and offered plenty of educational materials. I can't say that I support all of her product offerings, as a Nutritionist I have my own preferences. Nevertheless, her books are all good, especially for the layman who is willing to learn the truth about the environment we live in. Highly recommend !

Want a great little book that your book club will enjoy? Try Duped by Love. This book has a story that everyone can relate to. We all laughed when we read it and laughed again when we discussed it at our book club.
The author is totally believable. Most of us have become pretty good at predicting the ending of most books. This book had a surprise that none of us saw coming. I love it when a book/author can surprise me.

Duped By Love concentrates on dating situations that real people go through. I laughed aloud time after time. If dating has been somewhat of a problem for the book will crack you up. The book was based in Atlanta, Georgia where the ratio of women to men is like 8 to 1 and chronicles the life of a divorced single mother, Shelby Stewart. The book takes us through the dating scene and her hysterical conclusions. This book is a must read for those a looking for laughter.

Truly entertaining and crack-your-side funny...
Everyone in my club loved this book. As a 30-something single-mom trying to navigate the Atlanta dating scene, Duped by Love was the funniest and most accurate account of what the world of dating can be like, especially with the unique challenges that on-line dating brings. Trust me, I know!!!
