This is a must read for people in their 20s and 30s, especially those who are married and have children. Most people think Social Security and the company 401K will take care of their retirement. A great many of those people believe if they start saving in their mid-30s they will accumulate enough wealth to retire comfortably. This book reinforces the need to begin saving for retirement as soon as you begin working full-time because of the power of compounding and all of the various circumstances like Bar Mitzah's, weddings and other financially draining events. It made me examine my own portfolio and strategy for future financial events. It is a very easy to read and understand book and can be read in a day

I looked at many pebble mosaic books before deciding on this one.
Has many hints and ideas for the beginner, with marvelous step-by-step instructions. Her mosaic patterns and use of material are some of the most creative I have seen.

Enhanced with an informative essay by Lucy R. Lippard, Peter Gourfain: Clay, Wood, Bronze, And Works On Paper by features Russell Panczenko's interview with Peter Gourfain and is a remarkable photographic showcase of the unique and extrinsic drawings and sculptures of that minimalist expert. Some of the images are in color, but most photographs are black-and-white in this extensive and recommended collection in celebration of Peter Gourfain's artistic achievements and contributions as exhibited at the Elvehjem Museum of Madison, Wisconsin.

Worth its weight in gold - for decision makers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-19
This e-book is aimed at CIOs, business and technical decision makers, senior architects and consultants. It is a 150-page PDF document that is well researched, well written description of the strengths and weaknesses of web services, the planning requirements and challenges, and the value proposition for implementing them.

First, it sets the context for web services in a reasonably non-technical manner, staying focused on business issues when possible, but delving into the underlying technology when required. What I like is the balanced view it presents and well formed conclusions and recommendations that reflect no bias towards vendors. I also like the vendor and integrator profiles, description of implementation approaches, and the honest assessments of all.

What makes this book a necessary investment, though, is the comprehensive list of challenges and associated advice for overcoming many of them, and the approach to evaluating web services with respect to both technical and business impacts.

If you're early in the development and implementation phase of web services, or are evaluating them from a strategic vantage point this book will provide an incredible return on your investment (it is pricey) by preventing false starts, implementation disasters and choosing an approach that may be totally wrong for your organization. It will also help you to identify the total costs (and benefits) associated with web services.

Please God, Don't Call Me to Preach

Rare insight into Southern Culture/Civil Rights Movement
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-08
I was given this book, knew nothing about it, and have been blown away by it.

Anyone who thinks they understand the South during the civil rights movement, or would like to, needs to read this book. Your preconceptions will be changed by a man who constantly took the iniative to stand for what is right.

The 'story-telling' style of the narrative makes the reader feel as if they are standing beside Dr. Wells through one dramatic adventure after another. How so much could happen in one life is remarkable.

Page turner.

The Politics of Space Security: Strategic Restraint and the Pursuit of National Interests

A voice of reason in an often emotional crowd
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-01
Clay Moltz has done us a great service by producing an accurate, thorough, and well-reasoned account of national and global space security, including how we got where we are and where we might be going. This is particularly refreshing because much of the writing that has been done on this topic in recent years has lacked some or all of the above qualities.
The majority of the book (about 230 of the 329 pages of text) takes us through the first half-century of the space age from the perspective of space security issues. This is more than just a litany of geopolitical events, technological developments, and international agreements. It is a well-crafted retelling that ties together a multitude of threads in a way that brings clarity to the discussion of the philosophies, political motivations, and range of potential behaviors in space security activities. Those who are steeped in the history and policy of this subject will tread familiar ground in this 50-year narrative, and will find it valuable as a well-documented reference. For those who are new to the subject, this book is perhaps the quickest way to get up to speed as it consolidates a wealth of literature into one understandable package. It will make an outstanding textbook for graduate courses in security policy, and also for advanced undergraduates.
The author clearly draws on dissertation research that was done 20 years earlier, but it is updated and merged smoothly with more recent work that benefits from two decades of further research and experience. The numerous footnotes are a great resource and many include web addresses of source documents. In addition to the references, there are a significant number of informational footnotes. My only quibble with the presentation is that these notes typically contain material that could have been incorporated into the main text without distracting from the narrative.
The book's conclusions are that continued military restraint in space is in the best interests of U.S. and global security, and that transnational partnerships are to be encouraged. This summary statement (in my own words) does not do justice to the logical and balanced argument that Clay Moltz presents. He also recognizes that the future could take any of several different vectors, which makes me hope that Clay will revise this book every few years. But don't wait for the next edition. If you have any interest in this subject, read the book - whether or not you agree with his conclusions.
