This book is very intruging and exciting. It is all about Eugenie Clark's 12 years as director of the cape Haze Marine Laboratory now known as Mote Marine Laboratory. She encounters sharks and captures them for research. She learns much and this book is filled with many facts. This is better than the first book she wrote. Even though this book is old, it is still as fun and interesting as ever. Adventure surronds you as you dive in to read it and to explore Eugeine's world!

This is a timeless book in so many ways. There is the story of exploration and finding things out about the natural world. Eugenie Clark was an explorer and her story is fascinating. Her descriptions of ocean life and the people she meets are outstanding. There is also the story of a young woman overcoming incredible odds. Why? Clark was a young woman competing in (what was then)a man's world. She is also half Japanese, working for the Navy immediately after WW II. The book takes her from New York to the South Pacific and the Red Sea. What a job, Hitchhiking around the world studying fish. Look for the stories about the South Seas spear fisherman and the Egyptian marine biology professor. You feel like you are there with her. After reading it I was a little bit sad that I wasn't.

Lady with a Spear is a book filled with facts and adventure, told by the shark lady herself, Eugeine Clark. It's all about her life from early on to 1953. She travles from island to island in the South Pacific and Red Sea, collecting fish and watching sharks for research. Her wild, experinces will amaze you and open your heart and mind to another world as her experinces are explained to you. The book can be a bit technical at some times though but keep on reading! You'll fall in love with the sea and its creatures! Her second book, The LADY AND THE SHARKS is just as good, maybe even better! Eugenie is one amzing person and I suggest deeply that you read this book and feel what she herself feeled. She's just a great woman with a great personality and a dedication to save the creatures of the sea!

Richard "Dutch" Hardorff is one of the most thorough and objective students of General Custer's "last stand". His love of the truth and respect for the Indian tribes and their homeland is inspiring. His writing is captivating and fresh, especially considering the extensive treatment of the subject. Mr. Hardorff provides a lively and thought-provoking perspective that one would never get from the 'history' books. Truly an exceptional book and consistent with his fine other writings.

Written by a long-time student of the Little Big Horn, a gifted writer who is sympathetic to the Indians, this is another of this author's great contributions to the understanding of that event. Sprightly writing is so necessary and you will find it here, just as in CUSTER, TERRY AND ME, a creative (semi) nonfiction coverage of the tragedy of June 25, 1876. The latter was hailed by premier Custer Publisher and historian Richard Upton as worthy of the notice of scholars, and I'm sure he'd say the same of this book, since the author is a scholar of note in his field.

A first-rate reference and fascinating reading material for anyone with a scholarly interest in the Old West, Land As Far As The Eye Can See is recommended for Western American History studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

It has been exceedingly difficult to find information about the Portuguese in the West as we have researched our geneology. My mother has looked for books like this for years. We had hand-written personal stories (some with pictures) that Mr. Warrin carefully validated. What exemplary scholarship! I doubt that we will find copies for the grandchildren in the used bins...

I must repeat...You Won't Be Able to Put It Down!! It will haunt you long after you've read it. It's the dirty game of politics exposed at it's very best. Politics in the 1960's...Truly a Must Read!!

Anyone who voted in the 1960 Presidential election will love Art Clark's take on the Nixon-Kennedy race and what might have happened had history taken a different course--if Kennedy had not been gunned down in Dallas. There was truth to the rumor that LBJ would not have been Kennedy's running mate when he ran for re-election in 1964. I understand there's already a sequel--I can hardly wait to read it!

In the 1970's a four volume project was designed to re-examine the life of filmmaker and ethnographer Maya Deren. Four authors worked within the structure of a feminist collective typical of the time with revolving editorship. According to Catrina Neiman, one of the authors, an anticipated outcome was to stimulate further academic study on Deren. Volume 1, Signatures concerns Deren's early and university life, involvement in socialist youth groups and early poetry and fiction. Chambers, part 2 ilustrates her development as a filmmaker through her first four films with documents on their production and reception. What is noteworthy of this project is the illumination of parts of Deren's life beyond the four year period between 1943 and 1946 which most people know about. The 40 year old Deren who was involved with ethnography and ethnomusicology as well as the young teen involved in political movements are areas new to us. The two remaining volumes are ready and have been so for years which publisher Anthology Film Archives has yet to release. ' Legend' embraces the transformative nature of Deren's work in different creative relationships and is the most comprehensive work to date on her life.

Adrian Clark, music editor of Guitarist Magazine, has provided an invaluable resource for every guitarist. From Scotty Moore and Charlie Christian to Steve Vai and Jimi Hendrix, Clark analyzes and writes out typical licks and solos from the greats. It's superb!

Adrian Clark has created a wonderful book, providing a long and detailed lesson (with tablature, chords, personal history) in the style of each of more than two dozen "Legends of Guitar" (Hendrick, SRVaughn, Clapton, Chuck Berry, etc.)

This book is superior to other "how to play" books in that each lesson is a complete musical piece (intro,body,solo,ending), not a mere collection of riffs. This is the only guitar lesson book I have ever purchased where I will frequently just play the entire CD from beginning to end because the music is so enjoyable to listen to.

Clark takes pains to explain every detail of the introduction, the melody, the solo, and the ending. He includes scales, modes, and techniques used by each lesson (covering everything from basic Pentatonic to Myxolidian to Phrygian).

And the lessons are FUN!! For each "Legend", you get a terrific piece of music that is great to listen to, plus you get details of how to play every last note of it. The lessons cover early Rock (C. Berry), middle Rock (G.Harrison, Clapton), Blues (BB King, Albert King, Freddie King) and more recent guitar instrumental works. The most recent of the "Legends" take electronic guitar to the current edge of creativity. There is something here for the beginner, the intermediate, and the advanced player -- choose your Legend and you've pretty much determined the level of difficulty.

A great book by a great person. A truly inspiring story. It teaches a great lesson that you can do anything you set your mind to. Not to mention it is an highly entertaining adventure.

I am a great fan of Lewis & Clark and read a lot about thier expedition and other things associated with it and buitl around it. I had not heard of this variation on the adventure prior to finding this book but it makes for a great read and is quite an adventure.

This book is a must-have for Lewis and Clark fans.

The pictures are excellent and beautifully done.

The book is of similar quality to the following books which are at the top of my favorite Lewis and Clark Expedition picture books: Schmidt and Schmidt's "The Saga of Lewis & Clark" and Dayton Duncan's companion book to the Ken Burns' flim "Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery," and Stephen E. Ambrose and Sam Able's book.

Thorp's book will be a welcome addition to your personal library or a beautiful book to add to your coffee table. It also makes a wonderful gift. There can never be too many Lewis and Clark Expedition books.

Daniel Thorp's well-illustrated look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition is an excellent book for students just becoming interested in the legendary westward journey in Jeffersonian America. The writing style, although very good, seems to be more geared towards a high school audience, but it can still certainly hold the attention of more advanced readers. Thorp includes important background information on Thomas Jefferson's motivations for pushing the congressional-supported project and the influence of explorer/trader Alexander MacKenzie. The preparations for the voyage are described as well as the many places and tribes the Corps of Discovery encountered on their 28 month, 7,000 mile journey. Interesting points are made including the difference in relations between the Corps and the Mandan Indians of what is now North Dakota and the Corps and the Clatsop on the coast of the northern tip of Oregon. The Clatsop were not as interested in the voyagers as were the Mandan because the coastal people had already been trading with British and American sea traders for years (p. 106). The aftermath and legacy of the expedition is also examined (even in the early 1800s, it was hard to keep the American people's interest).

At 155 pages, a lot of which are made up of photographs, this book will probably not be comprehensive enough for more serious readers of the subject. Still, it represents a very thorough overview and an excellent choice for someone looking for a first book on Lewis and Clark. The book does have something to offer to readers who are already well-read on the event. It is filled with interesting photographs, most of which are in color. It includes photos of items taken on the journey, pages from journals kept by the explorers (so clear that you can read them), recent photos of the places they visited, maps, and paintings, and lithographs (many by George Catlin). Overall, it is a very well-written and handsome volume for the Lewis and Clark buff.

I really enjoyed the edited journals. They are a nice contrast to other books that just concentrate on a few events. The maps were a nice addition and the campsite locations telling me where they were was something I missed in all other books.

think they would be a wonderful addition to a high school
or college history class.
