Public and private historiesReview Date: 2007-12-17
Gerald, the elder brother, is a pompous conservative. In his senior school year he and his companions are putting together a time capsule which is not meant to be unearthed for 100 years. Gerald is writing his diary for the capsule. It is meant to be a record of the times, including the Falklands War, but gradually becomes a more personal record of private battles.
The light-hearted Hugh, the younger brother, is also in his senior school year and is also interested in history. The momentous events of Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait seems to dwarf his apparently petty life. Where is the meaning in all this he wonders? Then Hugh comments to Gerald that his beloved time capsule is going to be dug up as part of a new building project. Gerald seems strangely agitated by the news.
This is a story about public history and private history and the things that really motivate us and mold us into the people we are. Does nothing ever really change as Gerald comments? Do we really understand the events and people around us, or can they have surprisingly hidden depths?

FROM SPINDLETOP TO MODERN DAY BEAUMONTReview Date: 2007-12-30

A pretty good, if lightweight readReview Date: 2006-01-01
The Maid-at-arms is the story of two young people during the American Revolution - George Ormond and Dorothy Varick. Thrown together by family responsibilities, their love can never be. And yet, with the war intruding upon their comfortable New York world, everything is thrown into chaos, and anything is possible...
Overall, I found this to be a pretty good, if lightweight read. The story is interesting, and I loved the author's use of the upper-class New York seigniory class with its slavery and pretensions as a backdrop to the story. So, if you like good historical fiction, then I highly recommend this book to you. It's quite an interesting read.

entertaining speculative fictionReview Date: 2002-08-18
Vel journeys to the Frill, alien enemies with an alleged food supply, to make peace and trade. Instead, Vel meets Blakes, a clone of the English poet William Blake living inside a computer. Blakes once used Hitler methods to try to conquer Earth and subsequently was exiled to this planet. Still, he is Vel's only hope to provide sound advice without his unseemly ambition strong enough to take the throne away from the lad.
Though clearly a middle book plot (nothing of significance is resolved), HOPE'S WAR is an entertaining speculative fiction tale that examines the relativity of good and evil. The key characters (Vel, Blakes, and Denon) are multidimensional and the latter two retain qualities from the first novel (see HOPE'S END). Though the support cast contains no meaningful depth, fans will delight in Stephen Chamber's latest novel and hope the next book comes out rather soon.
