A Book for Those Who Love Bawdy and Bathroom Humor
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-17

This book is the best one I have ever read for using sexual and execretory references for effective satire. The optimal reader is probably a boy aged 8-13 who loves to explore the world from this perspective already. Older readers will enjoy the social commentary as well, but may not revel in the means of the commentary unless they like extensive references to bodily functions.

The use of the humor in this book is like slapstick is to comedy, its most outrageous and least restrained form.

No one can stay grumpy while reading this book. It may be the only literary solution for depression ever developed.

Obviously, if you can read French, it is even better in the original.

Many people will choose not to read this book because of the earthy nature of the language. That is probably a mistake, because those who make that choice are suffering from the unattractiveness stall, not seeing the swan in the ugly duckling. Earthy humor can be a great way to communicate, in the appropriate circumstances. You owe it to yourself to learn how a master, Rabelais, does it.

As a tip to the reader who has more sensitive tastes, I suggest you skip through to the end of sections that are bothering you. The very next section may well be one that leaves you in uncontrolled laughter, irresistibly lightening your mood.

Have a great laugh!

I have taught facilitation for 20 years and maintain an extended bibliography of available books. If someone said they can buy only one book as a resource in facilitating, I would recommend this one. It is a remarkable collection of exercises, tools, strategies, and tips.

This is my two year old son's favorite story time book! It's a very simple story about things kids love to do (like splashing in puddles!). BUT the drawings are full of lots of fun details that make us laugh. We have developed our own extended story from the great pictures and it keeps growing every time we read it. Very nicely written for a young audience. I would highly recommend for 18 months to about 3 years old. Enjoy!

Philomena Wonderpen (her best friend George calls her Philomena Daydreamer) is a little girl who loves to daydream. Perhaps if she could draw her dreams with a magic pen she could make them become real. Then maybe she could even make herself the teacher and then be able to boss the whole class! Superbly narrated by Melissa Chambers and featuring a total running time of 1 hour and 10 minutes, "Philomena Wonderpen Is A Very Naughty Teacher" by Ian Bone is a thoroughly delightful, charmingly imaginative, flawlessly recorded, and wonderfully engaging story that will prove to be a popular addition to family, school, and community library CD audiobook collections for young listeners ages 7 through 10.

The conscience of the piano.

Liszt was the composer and pianist that modify the piano technique. He used the whole arm and the body as an alone thing and not only the fingers as it was before. His imense work for piano include various diferent styles of composition. Religious, Sinistre, Romantic, mistic, Religious, technical, trancedental, .... He was really the master of the piano and this full score of his concerts contains all the difficulties and the essence of the work of this wonderfull composer. Definitively Indispensable in music literature.

Great to have these four Ravel masterpieces in an affordable and easy accessible edition

The title says it all. Because of copyright and the policies of Durand, Ravel's French publisher, who's been sitting on a gold mine all these years and taking full advantage of it, the scores of Ravel have been horrendously expensive - even study scores. Not anymore with this Dover edition. As the presentation note makes clear, the "other Chamber Works" included with the Piano Trio and Trois Poèmes de Mallarmé (for voice and chamber ensemble) are the Sonata for Violin and Cello and Introduction & Allegro for harp, string quartet, flute & clarinet. My only regret is that the Violin and Piano Sonata hasn't been included. I wonder why.

Originally released in 1955 and reprinted at least into 1962, this is an amazing time capsule looking back into the very early days of jazz. While in 2002, when I write this review, almost everyone in the volume is gone, including J.J. Johnson and Miles Davis, in the perspective of 1955, these two and many others were at the tail end of a long history of jazz to that point. Keepnews and Grauer had at their disposal hundreds of jazzmen who were still alive and could provide firsthand accounts of the days of jazz back to before the turn of the century. Charlie Parker was alive, almost all the swing and Dixieland greats were still around, and the "history" comes off more as a time capsule than a dusty history book. Jammed with photos and minutiae, such as early recording session logs, promotional posters and cards, etc., this is the sort of book that can never be written again. I waited months to find a used copy -- it's worth it. An excellent and encyclopedic volume with few notable gaps.
