This book covers quite a vast output and describes each work movement by movement. A very useful reference.

As far as we know, this is the best available book of commentary on standard repertoire of chamber music. It is also terrific - gives a little relevant biographical information on composers as well as notes on the works. Useful to look at before hearing a performance of a work, and great material (when combined with other sources) for writing program notes.

A well-written guide to SOME major chamber works
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-24
The primary audience of this guide is the classical music fan who has limited musical knowledge but a keen interest in learning chamber music in more depth and following the form and details within each movement. For each work, Berger presents a brief but quite interesting historical prelude, followed by 'play-by-play' highlights of each movement as to its structure, harmony patterns and distinguishing features. While each description is not long, there is enough condensed information to give a definate sense to the flow of the piece and what makes it unique. I really admire Berger's writing style that is engaging, creative and says a lot in a few words. Also, his prose are not overly "flowery," intimidating or condesending. Also included is the brief but excellent glossary at the end which contains really clear definitions of key musical terms encountered in chamber music.

Overall, this guide should be a staple in the library of the chamber enthusiast and it is inexpensive as well. It is my most used guide out of many. Musicians too can benefit from this book as an intro to some works but it will not likely satisfy them with enough details as to the score. While a healthy amount (or all) of each composer's chamber works are represented in this volume, the sonatas (for one or two instruments) are not. These are covered in a different book by Berger: "Guide to the Sonatas," which unfortunately is a very short book that tends to leave one wanting for more descriptions and details. But, what is here in this book is quite good. Berger gives wonderful, in-depth coverage of most major works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn and Schubert, but much less for "minor" composers like Dvorak, Faure, Ravel and others. Hard to fit too much into a small paperback I guess. What many of us would love to see who greatly enjoy Berger's skilled commentary is ONE DEFINITIVE BOOK on the entire (or at least most of) chamber-music repertoire - combining this book, his tiny, rather-superficial book on the Sonatas and expand it into a new major edition. Then, we would have a volume for the ages.

The Best Guide on Orchestral Music

This is probably the best guide about orchestral music I've ever come across. The author's style is familiar, accessible, and enjoyable. He also does not try to impress his opinions on the reader (though he does allow himself to vent his feelings about suites drawn from operas).I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to become familar with classical music.

Best introduction to classical music for novice listeners!

This book is probably the best introduction to classical music I have come across. The author never condescends to the reader and speaks in a language that nurtures interest and enthusiasm in a world waiting to be discovered. There is a brief history of each composer that puts the music in historical context and is followed by a description of the major works with clues to listen for in enjoying the music. I find the program notes included with recorded music tend to be written for listeners who already have a moderate to advanced knowledge of classical music. Mordden seems to remember when he was a "beginner listener" and has shown the path leading into an exciting world just waiting to be discovered.

Lives up to its name. Excellent.

I was consulting this book again, today. The edges of thepages are starting to get a little worn from thumbing.I find it consistently more interesting and more helpful than the typical CD program notes, and has the great advantage of guiding you toward other works by the same composer. _Very_ complete. If you're looking for "a book on classical music" for yourself or as a gift, this is a good candidate. Covers about 700 works by 80 composers--every classical composer _I've_ heard of-- and the notes strike a good balance between the "received wisdom" and Mordden's own opinions. Idiosyncratic transliterations of some composers' names (he spells Tschaikowsky "Chaikofsky."

David Nadal has put together a volume of high quality music for the classical guitar. Included are standard pieces, but also some rarely published gems- my favorite among them being his impressive transcription of a Vivaldi Violin Concerto for solo guitar. This piece alone is well worth the money!

This is a must-have for classical guitarists. There are advanced, standard-repertoire pieces suitable for performance as well as approachable pieces for study - all spanning from the Medieval to the Romantic era. Best of all, the editing and fingerings make the music approachable every level of ability. It does not get better than this.

An indispensable reference for hyperbaric oxygen facilities
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-14
This new book is a gold mine of vital technical information regarding standards and operating procedures for clinical hyperbaric units. Its international scope is impressive as it covers standards observed in the United States as well as Europe, South America, South Africa, Japan, Australia and the rest of the Pacific Rim. It is an authoritative reference produced by a Who's Who of internationally recognized engineers, facilities designers and operators who participate on key standards committees such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the National Fire Protection Association, the Food and Drug Administration, the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine, and the European Diving Technology Committee, just to name a few. Anyone contemplating building a hyperbaric facility should read this book first, which will put them in a position to save thousands of dollars and avoid ending up with the wrong, permanently installed equipment. It should be a ready reference for standard setting and preventative maintenance in every hyperbaric unit world-wide. The book gives detailed explanations and standards for piping, electrical, pressurization, breathing gas, fire suppression and ancillary support systems. Special chapters also cover an analysis of chamber accidents, their causes and prevention, the roles of oxygen and static electricity in chamber fires, risk assessment and failure analysis and much on quality control and preventative maintenance Training programs are also covered. In short, if one is practicing hyperbaric medicine or contemplating entering the field, this book has got to be on your bookshelf. There is no other book like it

The book features every possible aspect of hyperbaric facilty safety. This is unique, as it has never been accomplished before. To achieve this, the editor Tom Workman, who is a well known expert in the field of hyperbaric technolgy, has gathered an outstanding group of authors from all over the world. I therefore like this book in particular, as it gives a comprehensive review of the available standards and codes of practice for hyperbaric medicine from all parts of the world. It is an imperative to have this book available at every hyperbaric facilty worldwide!

Tom Workman has done his homework. While he personally has been involved with hyperbaric safety for a very long time, he still gathered together a group who collectively has a wealth of experience in hyperbaric safety. As the former staff liaison for the Technical Committee on Hyperbaric & Hypobaric Facilities, I had the privilege of working with (former) Lt. General Workman. Not only did he chair the committee, he made certain that experts in various aspects of hyperbaric safety were appointed to help develop and refine fire safety standards for hyperbaric facilities. He has taken the subject of safety in general a big step forward by tapping these and other experts, and provided them with a podium to help teach others about hyperbaric safety. The result is a very comprehensive book on the subject. Operating hyperbaric facilities is a hazard in and of itself. The NFPA standard on the subject has help over the past 25 years to reduce the risk from fires immensely. Mr. Workman's new book will be of equal help for users, researchers and manufacturers in reducing the other hazards associated with hyperbaric operations. I thus recommend this book without any hesitation. Signed, Burton R. Klein, PE Burton Klein Associates Newton, MA (former staff liaison to the NFPA TCC on Health Care Facilities - NFPA 99)

21st century western view of Islam, without p.c. blinders
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-16
Chambers takes the reader who wishes to know more about Islam as it is practiced today into the history and theology which has filled the hearts of the Islamists with a burning hatred of the western world, and in particular American culture. He takes issue with the politically correct view that Islam is primarily a religion dedicated to peace, and fully discusses the pre-requisites to that peace as they are set out in the Koran and other Islamic doctrine. This book explains in academic detail why separation of church and state is such a hard sell in the Moslem world without patronizing that world or promoting any other religious viewpoints. It will not comfort pollyannas, but should also not frighten the reader into bigotry or intolerance. I would not hesitate to recommend the book to anyone seeking a basic, unbiased understanding of Islam as it exists in the 21st century.

The author gives us vital religious, historical and political background surrounding the important issues facing our world today. An excellent read with comprehensive statistics and footnotes. Thought-provoking and helpful to those of us who seek to understand Islam and the radicalized leaders who use violence to pursue their goals. Reading this led me to read the Koran for the first time.

Dispelling Confusion With Fact Driven Analysis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-19
In the aftermath of 9/11 like many Americans I questioned Why would they do this to us?? I don't think I even really knew who 'they' were, I certainly couldn't answer the whole question. As time went on the cacophony of passionate commentators on all sides seeking to take possession of and answer this question confused me more than they enlightened. Painfully obvious in most cases were the religious, cultural, and political biases that each brought to the table.

I am glad to have found Jihad On Us All. Consistent with his background in business consulting, the author, Steve Chambers, cuts through the noise of the public 'debate' to carefully examine the question using thoroughly researched, carefully documented facts. What I really liked about Jihad is that Chambers has obviously taken care to consider disparate views and address alternate opinions and concerns, but, after gathering facts and presenting them, he does not blanch at identifying their implications. As he shows, it's not all 'just a matter of opinion' and turning a blind eye, for even the most charitable of reasons, is not a pragmatic solution, it's an invitation to trouble.

As background Chambers provides a concise but broad and balanced primer on Islam that I found extremely helpful and sufficient on its own for me to recommend the book. But the thrust of Jihad is an examination of the threat posed by Militant Islamists. Jihad carefully identifies them distinguishing them from Moderate Muslims and shows the religious, social, political, psychological, and economic factors that have bred and empowered this fanatic strain with such tragic consequences. Chambers shows that Militant Islam poses a serious and growing threat not just to the West, but to Moderate Islam, and in fact to any that do not join their cause.

Jihad also provides a deeper review of two of the most troubled and troubling flashpoints of Militant Islam: the conflicts between Israel and Palestine, and between Pakistan and India over Kashmir. The histories and alarming trajectories of these long running conflicts, and the critical and dangerous role of Militant Islam in exacerbating and prolonging them offers a disturbing, and important lesson to Americans about the challenges that lay before us in countering Militant Islam.

Finally, Chambers offers policy prescriptions ?how can we of the West, Moderate Muslims, and people of good will face this threat? Reflecting the overall character of the book these are pragmatic, constructive, and, one hopes, quite achievable.

While Chambers encourages his readers to go further in their examination of this important issue, Jihad On Us All succeeded in giving me a much fuller appreciation for the complexity of my original question, a thoughtful response, and quite a bit more.

I was translating a rather involved and esoteric webpage from French to English and picked this up to supplant a much weaker dictionary; I was not disappointed. It proved to be of great value.

It's big, the entries are easy to work with, it covers slang, it has good pronunciation guides. Would serve one well in commercial, private or educational use.

Larousse sets the standard for pocket dictionaries. This "nouveau dictionnaire de poche: français-anglais" is the best small french-english/english-french dictionary one can find. The January, 2000 edition has 120,000 translations, which is 40,000 more than the 1999 editon and well worth the five dollar increase in price. This dictionary is excellent for quick translations and is very up-to-date with usage.

I bought my copy on the street in Caracas and the cover is different, but I'm pretty sure it's the same book. It is geared toward the educated individual, with some knowledge of grammar, who is at the intermediate Spanish level. It is under 300 pages, but it's very comprehensive. The answers are at the back along with several verb conjugation charts.
