I got my copy directly from Glenn Campbell when he self-published this book in 1995. I wouldn't part with it for the world. (Well, not the world . . .) If you're interested in the lore of Area 51, a/k/a Groom Lake, a/k/a Dreamland, a/k/a "the Ranch", try to scare up a copy of this book. It's almost a piece of history in the modern legend of Area 51. Glenn Campbell was the leader in the movement to shed light on the goings-on at Groom Lake. I call him the Guru of Groom Lake. This book was his introduction for would-be "interceptors". We haven't heard too much about the base since they shut down Freedom Ridge, but it's still there. Something will come up eventually. Good luck on your next adventure, Glenn.

Ribald and Uproarious

Aristophanes was a ribald playwright whose raucous plays were brilliantly brought to life by Alfred Corn, RHW Dillard, XJ Kennedy, and Campbell McGrath. In the first play of the series of four plays, Wasps, satirizes the jury-for-pay system, prevalent in Athens during the war with Sparta. Athens was populated with older men, veterans of the wars with Persia, and were particularly noted for the severity of their judgments. In the play, Philocleon is being kept prisoner in his own home by his son, Bdelycleon, in an attempt to prevent the father from going to the courthouse to pronounce sentence on a criminal before even hearing the evidence. Bdelycleon uses a clever argument to convince his father to stay home and serve as judge and jury over household matters. His first case was trying the pet dog for stealing food and not sharing it with the cat.

Lysistrata is a hilarious play about Athenian women who team up with the women of Sparta and Thebes to force the men to make peace. Written during the Peloponnesian War, Aristophanes, like his play, Peace, takes a strong anti-war stance (...) .

In Frogs, Aristophanes hits upon the theme of a lack of good playwrights in Athens. Written after the death of Euripides, Aeschylus, and Sophocles, the hero of the comedy, Dionysus (god of arts, among other things) wants to bring back Euripides from Hades. He pretends to be Hercules (who had gone to Hades to capture Cerberus, the guard dog of Hades) and runs into all kinds of trouble. He eventually referees a crazy debate between Euripides and Aescylus, to determine who the best playwright is.

Finally, in The Sexual Congress, we have an uproarious comedy about the women of Athens disguising themselves as men and stocking the General Assembly. Praxagora, as the leader of the women, proposes that the affairs of the city be turned over to the women. The women won the day and instituted a utopian society not to different from Plato's Republic, but this one went way overboard. Written after the war with Sparta, Athens was beset with corruption and low morale at the time.

The four plays in Aristophanes, 2 span the gamut from Old Comedy to New Comedy. The former was characterized by vulgar and slapstick humor with a Chorus used to interact with the audience. As comedy evolved the Chorus played less a role and there was a softening of the ribald humor so characteristic of Old Comedy.

To make the plays more readable and understandable without losing any of the humor of the plays the translators often made references to Twentieth Century phrases instead of the original Greek phrases. This might be annoying to the scholar but makes these plays eminently enjoyable to the general reader.

As the Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination spread following the frontier from its Kentucky and Tennessee roots, it found fertile ground in Arkansas. This volume is a rich tribute to the heritage and collective witness of this denomination from early in the history of the American nation up to 1984. The book is well written and loaded with people, places and dates. An excellent item for the Arkansas geneologist as well as the state and local historian. A nicely produced hardcover volume in dust jacket.

I liked this book. I am a bit of an artist and have taken several watercolor classes. What I liked about this book was the actual work on color. Sounds strange but learning to watercolor doesn't always mean learning to effectively use and mix color--at least that is what I have found. This book is a good way to practice color mixing and actually playing with color so that when you are ready to paint you can proceed with more confidence.

Very tense and insightful look into post world war II where ex-concentration camp survivor meets up with and it chased by evil Nazi camp doctor. Doesn't end happily which makes it even more interesting. I am surprised no one else has reviewed this gripping novel

Astounding Stories was the highest quality "pulp" magazine ever published, thanks to intelligent editor John W. Campbell, Jr., who first discovered and published in these pages the best authors of the 20th century, including Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, AE Van Vogt, and others. In these 3 lush volumes Easton Press presents most of the best stories reprinted, for the first time ever, as they originally appeared in the magazine, including the cover paintings for each story -- by such great artists as Frank Kelly Freas. These leather-bound editions are printed on acid-neutral paper, with 22kt gold on the spine, gilded page edges, and ribbons attached to mark the pages. Just a few of the classic stories included are The Roads Must Roll by Robert A. Heinlein; Killdozer by Theodore Sturgeon; Cold Front by Hal Clement; The Shadow Out of Time by H. P. Lovecraft; The Changeling by A. E. Van Vogt; several stories by Isaac Asimov including Nightfall; and many others by such terrific writers as Poul Anderson, Fredric Brown, Eric Frank Russell, James Blish, Lewis Padgett, Murray Leinster, Edmond Hamilton, and Jack Williamson.

Jeansonne, using herself as an example of the book's premise, invites the reader to retrace and relive with her the significant events and insights of her own life that have resulted in bringing about her own spiritual enrichment AND serenity. Her piercing simplicity and unabashed honesty make the trip with her both joyful and insightful. And, long after setting the book aside, it will continue to influence any reader who feels a need to embark upon a search for his or her own spiritual enrichment.

Readers should not look for a "prescription" that will lead them to self revelations by the end of the last chapter. Readers seeking that traditional path should ask about the availability of the ever so many "Moses coming down from the mountain" books. Finishing Wrapped in Gold leaves one confident that spiritualism and self discovery are attainable regardless of your background or occupation. How you get ther, though, is quite a personal thing. How refreshing!!!

This book is great whether you are new to the Austin area or have lived here all of your life. There is information from a list of area parks to schools to where you renew your drivers license. Basic information that we need everyday but often don't know where to find as well as historic information about buildings and parts of town are included. It is great.
