Hubert was a man of astonishing intelligence and humour. This comes through well in this book of essays, which provide a good
taster for his work. This book has great relevance for the world of today, and provides many insights into the troubles in
Ireland, the Basque region, and the Balkans. What marks Hubert out for particular greatness as an essayist was his distinct
brand of subtle, but mischevious, humour. He was always prepared to poke fun at sensless authority wherever it appeared, whether
in the state, religion or the Academic world

Talking During Sex
Amos Lassen
Robert Butler has written a collection of stories about what fifty couples talk about while having sex. He further identifies each pair of loves not only by name but by age and occupation as well. He puts them in a place having to do with their lives, gives them an occasion and a date and then lets them talk. He uses couples from all periods of time--Adam and Eve, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, Shakespeare and the third Earl of Southampton, Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde, George and Laura Bush, J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson, the Prince and Princess of Wales and a host of others.
The dialog is hysterical even though most speak rather poetically and there is wonderful parody here when Butler is not too serious. I think my favorite line is when Gertrude Stein says of Alice B. Toklas, "her mustache is her mustache is her mustache".
The women here come across as vain and full of contempt; the men seem to think they are what they are not. I have read a review that considers the dialog between the sexual partners as insipid and not erotic and the whole concept of the book as childish and "asinine". I found it delightful, irreverent and fun.

Where did Jeeves come from? What family did he come from? Where did he learn to become the learned and serious minded Gentleman's
Gentleman that we all have come to know and love in the novel? And what happened to him after his retirement? The answers
are all here, in this lovely, informative book by C. Northcote Parkinson.

I picked this book up from a stack, knowing nothing about it. When I next looked up it was four hours later and I was halfway
through it.
This is not a feminist book, although it is definitly from the feminine perspective. Hathaway was a talented writer with a keen artist's eye, her story will appeal to anyone. The subject of the story is her purchasing and remodeling her first house in Maine. By the end you see not just the house -- you see the town, the countryside, the people and the writer.
Despite her hardships, she is never self-pitying. She writes in a clear, clean prose of her life; unflinching, honest, and beautiful. Seen as a cripple by many, she shows that the value of a person lies within, with her sharp wit and inner strength shining through. Inspirational, but not preachy; sweet, but not sugary.
Young or old, male or female, you should read this book.

Sara Salih has written a wonderfully concise and at times illuminating introduction to one of the key thinkers of post-structuralist
feminism, queer theory, and gender studies. Salih dissects Butlers work energetically - moving from `gender performativity'
to `femininity', `language', `the psyche' and so on. Sara is clearly an expert when it comes to Butler and this mastery articulates
itself in very concise and accessible language which ultimately benefits the reader. Salih's only failing is her seemingly
uncritical stance towards Butler, which at times comes across as dogmatic (especially when she's defending Butler's ridiculous,
at times unreasonably esoteric writing). This however shouldn't deter anyone from reading this otherwise excellent introduction.

This well produced book is considered one of the best self-defense books for women ever published. It features over 170 pages
of detailed (yet practical) text and numerous photos diagrams.

Richard Wyler gives us an action packed story and great characters. His description of the Arizona landscape was well done and I could almost feel the oppressive heat. The struggle the white characters have with trusting each other, the expectation of these people turning on one other at any moment, the burning desire of the Apaches to kill the whites, all combine in this fast moving tale to provide an gripping read.
It says on the front of the book `A classic tale of the West', reckon I can only agree with that statement!
Well worth your money.
