Butler Books

This is an excellent book. This is the story of a very overweight girl going into junior high and dealing with her mother dating, being a misfit with no friends whatsoever, and being taunted relentlessly by Miss Popularity, Marilyn. Lois seems to not want any friends and takes her anger out on food. This proves to be a problem when she grows larger and larger. She finds solace in a teacher who takes Lois under her wing, puts her on a diet and helps build her back up when she is emotionally abused by a teacher who yells at her for no reason and allows the class to laugh at her. This is definitely a book to read if you're into teasing others for being different. It will show you what you're doing to that person.

The Dynamics of Language Use: Functional And Contrastive Perspectives edited by Maria de Los Angeles Gomez-Gonzalez, Susanna M. Doval Suarez (Pragmatics and Beyond New Series: John Benjamins Publishing) This book brings together a collection of articles characterized by two main themes: the contrastive study of parallel phenomena in two or more languages, and an essentially functional approach in which language is regarded, first and foremost, as a rich and complex communication system, inextricably embedded in sociocultural and psychological contexts of use. The majority of the studies reported is empirical in nature, many making use of corpora or other textual materials in the language(s) under investigation. The book begins with an introductory section in which the editors provide surveys of the state of the art in both functional and contrastive linguistics. The other five sections of the volume are devoted to (i) a cognitive perspective on form and function, (ii) information structure, (iii) collocations and formulaic language, (iv) language learning, and (v) discourse and culture.

Wallace Chafe's paper tackles head-on the important but difficult question of the relationship between grammar and thought, his treatment of this issue being funda?mentally functional in nature. His starting point, namely that thoughts are filtered through the particular semantic resources permitted by the language, and that seman?tic structures are then converted to grammatical structures which are then symbolised by sounds, is uncontroversial. What is essentially functional about Chafe's position is the contention that for an understanding of why grammar is as it is, linguists need to pay more rather than less attention to grammar per se and more to semantics and its relationship with thought, as well as to language change. Chafe postulates four linked stages in the conversion of thoughts to semantic structures. Firstly, the speaker must select which thoughts s/he wishes to verbalise. Secondly, these thoughts must be categorised. Most thoughts consist of particular ideas relating to particular people, things, events, times and places, and these ideas must be recast as instances of more general and familiar categories. Thirdly, the speaker must select a complex orientation consisting of values for time, place, epistemological factors and attitude. Finally, categorisations and orientations must be combined. In explaining why the re?sulting semantic structure must be converted into a grammatical structure on its way to representation in sound, Chafe points out that as languages change, the relationship between the use of expressions and the thoughts they convey may become less direct, through the historical processes of lexicalisation, relating to ideas, and grammaticali?sation, concerned with orientations. Chafe's arguments are illustrated throughout by reference to an extended piece of authentic conversational interaction.

This book came out at the exact time I needed it. I am starting a small web-based business and was uncertain on all the legalities involved. Ms. Butler's book was extremely helpful in sorting through the legal pitfalls of doing business in cyberspace.

Well written. Clearly teaches the basics of economic principles and then builds upon that foundation.

I used this publication for a school paper on the history of black economic development, and it was really my most invaluable resource. Not only does Butler discuss black entrepreneurship throughout American history, but he also compares the experiences of African-Americans to other ethnic groups and explains why African-Americans have been so relatively unsuccessful because of a theory that he calls the "economic detour theory." Chock full of information, it is not only a historical account but a sociological study into the state of black economic development. It is highly recommended!

Lollie Butler is a genius! Her poetry speaks to your heart and imagination! This book should be read to every child in the country! Can't wait to read more of Butler's works!

This book is good for relaxing and enjoying.It is filled with great adventures too. So sit down and treat your brain to a book.

I had the seventh edition of this book. The book was great but what I thought was impressive was the included CDROM. It made learning concepts easy. It shows how to do things like telling the differences in heart murmors (something that would be impossible with only a book) and invesitages the body in 3D animation. I have used many other anantomy programs and find this one to be far superior. I am amazed every time I use it! Like I said, the book is great as well.

Recommended for all in the medical field and those suffering from pain with inquisitive minds. Fun illustrations. Written for multiple levels of understanding.

The best book on pain out there, easy to follow and very reassuring. A must read for anyone who is dealing with pain - especially chronic pain.

The charts show water depths and placement of rocks, hidden shoals, tidal shallows and other such hazards to your hull that might not be visually obvious. Many different charts cover Bimini, Berry, Andros, New Providence and the Grand Bahama islands, show common travel routes with waypoints, lon/lat and helpful hints. Interspersed are pages of text which cover money, groceries, medical services, police, marine supplies, restaurants, radio frequencies, where to buy propane, everything a traveller could want to know about a particular island or area. Well worth the [money]; it should pay for itself on your first cruise. Mine certainly did!
