Burns Books

The sequel to "Mystery on Rampart Hill", Manitou Art Caper by Emily Burns is the next involving installment in this on-going series for young readers about the Thompson kids, teen detectives who become involved in tracking down the thief behind a number of art gallery robberies. The Manitou Art Caper is enthusiastically recommended as a charming and enjoyably entertaining story.

Our school is looking forward to an author visit from Emily Burns. She provided us with a preview copy of Marked Evidence. I believe it will be very well received by our 5th and 6th grade students. I enjoyed reading it myself as many local attractions and familiar landmarks were sprinkled throughout the story. The book reads quickly and the characters are believable as friends you'd like to have yourself.

I used this book along with a Marketing Research class at Drake University. The text clearly explained the principles of marketing research and provided real-life examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with Marketing.

The title refers to Mary Booker and Richard Hillary. Richard Hillary is famous in his own right for being the author of "The Last Enemy" which describes some of his experiences as a Spitfire pilot in the early years of World War Two as he fought against the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. His book has become a classic of aviation literature and he is commemorated in the Richard Hillary Trust.

This book came about after the author Michael Burn (who married Mary in 1947) found a collection of Mary and Richard's love letters after she died in 1974. The book is very evocative of the era and is an intimate and romantic story of the love affari between a young pilot and a beautiful older woman. It reminds us of the courage and endurance of the young pilots, and the fears and hopes of those that lived through those times.

This book is inspirational. By reading this book you should be able to acquire a more intimate knowledge of the Blessed Sacrament. The book is separated into three main sections which each intoducing a practice that is recommended.

These practices consist of making our assistance at Mass a reflected interior act that allows us to consciously unit with Christ in the same sacrifice of life; making our communion part of our assistance at the Sacrifice so that the Eucharist union is complete and seal the gesture of the Offertory; and to understand that Christ's presence in the soul gives us divine support and an awakening in us his charity.

As an amateur art conoisseur, and art student currently in study, I find this book to be a marvel. The photos of the artwork are fantastic. Nowhere have I been able to find photos and information on many of the permanent collection pieces that are captured in this book. Small captions are descriptive and informative, but the photos are the focus. It's the best one could possibly get without being there.

This fine, limited-edition hard-bound book with dust jacket was published in 1987 by the Twelvetrees Press. It contains forty four-color plates on uncoated paper with accompanying text. The photograph on each plate consists of a medical subject from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. They are taken from the Burns Archive, which houses over 700, 000 vintage prints, including the world's largest collection of early medical photographs. This collection is especially noted for iconic historic images- medical photography and images of the dark side of life, including death, disease, and war.

"Masterpieces of Medical Photography" is edited and introduced by Joel-Peter Witkin. The captions and afterword are by Stanley B. Burns, M.D.

The book, itself is unpaginated, and sized at 12 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. The first edition was limited to 3000 hardbound copies. Each photograph is on a separate page with a short description on the back of the page.

Many of the photographs are taken of the dead and wounded from America's Civil War. One of the saddest is labeled "A Morning's Work," an 1865 Albumen print credited to Reed B. Bontecou, M.D. It consists of a pile of amputated legs and feet.

Each of the forty prints in this book is explained in a separate appendix by Stanley B. Burns, M.D. For instance "A Morning's Work" is described as follows:

"This photograph graphically documents Civil War devastation. More than 625,000 men died, one of every four that fought. In addition, more than 400,000 were wounded. Infections, chronic diarrhea and dysentery killed tens of thousands in the years following the war as a ravaged generation and a young nation continued to pay the cost of the war."

"Masterpieces of Medical Photography" is a rare collector's item that should be cherished by medical professionals, photographers, and historians who are interested in the Civil War and nineteenth century medicine.

I've used this book and the Grades 2-3 book in my classroom and both are filled with great lesson plans that really help kids think and problem solve.

This assists teachers with enhancing their math curriculum and making it more accessible to students. It motivates them and gives them an arena in which to expolore math concepts. Using non-fiction books also makes it cross-curricular.

This thorough and thoughtful book emphasizes critical thinking through careful exploration of Probability. Hands-on, minds-on group activities combine with effective classroom lessons to create a wonderful unit plan. I taught a 4 week unit to a class of third graders using this book as my guide and the class didn't want to stop learning probability!
