very helpful textbook

Review Date: 2002-01-28
I've been studying for a "psychology of aging" exam, & used Dr.Belsky's book to help with my studying: it proved to be of great help, especially because the whole book is written in a narrative, conversational way, which helps the reader. All the major developments in aging are contained in the book: historical, basic information on gerontology & geropsychology, lots of "life-span approach" information, & all that is needed to understand how the (relatively new) field of gerontology came to expand & become a field that is now growing at a quick pace.

There's also a lot of up-to-date information, all the new findings & ideas in the field, which help to see how gerontology has started to change the aging process: lots of these changes are described in the book, things like new ways of measuring cognitive skills, the emotional changes in the older population, & the dying process & how to help make it more humane. Needless to say, this textbook contains many "aging in process" vignettes, which graphically describe real problems & real situations of real people...there are also many figures & graphs, which help the student understand the research & put it in context. All in all, a very helpful textbook.

Outstanding Coverage
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-21
Even though this book is considered an elementary introduction, it is thorough, complete and up-to-date. Written with great clarity, it manages to cover the state of the art at a detailed level. It is clearly a textbook, but it provides enough reference materials for additonal study if desired. The publisher's review is understated. Recommended for anyone interested in the subject.

This book offers an extensive yet concise, easy to follow guide to all aspects of OT in mental health. Bonder translates the DSM-IV into OT terms with an emphasis on effective treatment. The etiology of the conditions and the application of performance areas and performance components are directly applicable to OT practice. The book also provides extensive references for further reading and study. An excellent resource!

Pursuing A Promise: A History Of African Americans At Georgia Southern University by F. Erik Brooks (Assistant Professor of Political Science, Georgia Southern University) is an impressively researched and presented study of the struggles and hardships faced by African Americans when integrating the schooling systems of the South in general, and Georgia Southern University in particular. Delving deeply into a thorough study of the first district A&M school, Pursuing A Promise guides its readers through the history of the school's eventual conversion into a regional university. An impressive work of original scholarship, Pursing A Promise is a seminal addition to academic library Black Studies and American Education History reference collections.

A true historical, non-sensational view of the tragedy.
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-22
The Tiananmen square tragedy can be analyzed, according to Brook, as the result of a single order from the CCP for the PLA to attack civilians. The PLA members and leaders could individually question the order, but once it was given, the order commanded the PLA as a unit to uphold its mandate to protect the CCP from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Therefore, the soldiers, given only deadly weapons with which to protect the party, necessarily did so with deadly force. Unlike other analyses of tragedies that have been produced recently, such as Iris Chang's 'Rape of Nanking' with all its errors, this is an actual work of history that traces the order to attack back to its origin, and therefore answers the painful question of how the party claiming to be the dictatorship of the proletariat could through its military might against its own people. Avoiding sensationalism, Brook analyzes what happened and why without overstepping the bounds of reasonable conjecture. Overall, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in understanding the tragedy of May Fifth.

A classic Mayan folktale for children
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-28
In The Race Of Toad And Deer, American Latina author Pat Mora has deftly written a poetic adaptation of the Mayan version of the tortoise and hare fable specifically designed for children ages 2 to 5. The arrogant deer Venado boasts of his strength and speed. The wily toad Sapo challenges deer to a race. All the jungle animals (jaguar, tapir, armadillo, and toucan) watch the race take place. Toad may not be as large as Venado, but he has many friends to help him. Sapo wins the race and proves the value of brains over brawn while doing so. Domi's wonderful artwork is the perfect enhancement for Mora's entertaining and highly recommended version of a classic Mayan folktale for children.

The action started in the first lines of the book and kept going to the end. Enen when it seemed there was a lull, something was simmering on the next page. Not until the end did I realize who, what and why. The story was very entertaining and the mystery was a well hidden secret that kept me on the "edge of my seat". Now, I want the next book!!
