Biography of the Abolitionist Minister
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-03
Biography of Dr. Edward N. Kirk, from his papers, including "Calls" to various churches, scrap-books, diaries, pamphlets, nespapers containing sermons and addresses, and personal statements from people who knew him. Dr. Kirk was pastor of the Mount Vernon Church in Boston who rejected slavery from his pulpit and frequently went out on the stump to support causes in which he believed. Considerable abolitionist material in the book. A sample: "Assert the manhood of the negro; make it appear as horrible to defraud him as to defraud a white man of his rights; to inflict on him penalities for being what his Creator intended him to be; to make him the mere tool of another's selfishness; to discourage his reaching the highest attainments and position he is capable of reaching and attaining. Insist on the principle, no matter who is to enforce it, the general or the state government, that nationality and color shall not be the test of the right to elect our rulers, to testify in our courts, to sue before them, and, if a native, to be chosen to sit in the presidential chair. In a word, every human being shall, on this part of God's earth, stand on a perfect level with every other man before the law

This exceptional book is made so because of the man it is about. Dr. Zuhdi is a pioneer in medicine and is a man whose compassion for mankind has been demonstrated time and again. This story truly depicts a journey to success and fulfillment of man that is filled with tidbits of humor, interesting medical facts and soul searching philosphy. I highly recommend it.

An oldie but goodie from a legendary mountain ecologist
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-19
Maurice Brooks is a legendary mountain ecologist. The West Virginia University Professor comes from a family of nature lovers...his father and three of his brothers are professional naturalists or biologists. Moreover, over the years Brooks has explored the Appalachian Mountains from Quebec to Georgia and is the author of the highly regarded book, "The Appalacians."

To this end, "Life of the Mountains," is a well-written narrative that includes brilliant photos and drawings of nature's majestic mountain beauty and the living things that live there. This 1967 publication also has a very good graph that dramatically shows the differences in elevation between western and eastern mountains in North America. In addition, the author provides an appendix with a list of the finest national parks and monuments located in mountain country; a list of vanishing wildlife of the mountains; the basics of backpacking (with a list of hiking clubs across the country); and a guide to common fossils.

My favorite section is the narrative of Hawk Mountain in eastern Pennsylvania. Every autumn, bird watchers gather atop Hawk Mountain to witness the migration flights of hawks and other birds that pass the peak on their way south for winter. Professor Brooks provides records kept over many years that provide a timetable for migrations at Hawk Mountain. The Sep-Oct-Nov timetable is for a dozen differenct types of Hawks; the Osprey; the Turkey Vulture; the Bald and Golden Eagle; as well as for the Peregrine Falcon. The section on Yosemite Valley in California's Yosemite National Park is also special as is the section on the glacial crevasse on Mount Challenger in the Cascade Range. And before I forget...the section called, "The spell of the mountains," is pure poetry for people who appreciate the splendor of mountains.

Still and all, Professor Brooks collected the finest minds in the nation to help him with this publication. Experts from Cornell University, the National Audubon Society, the National Park Service, the University of Georgia, Duke University, Yale University, the University of California, New York University and the California Academy of Sciences contributed to the excellence of this text. Overall, this is a great book for children, young adults and all lovers of mountain nature. You'll never tire of this book. Highly recommended.

a rare jewel of brief information of so many of the Puritans....excellent for reference, and brief biographical sketches. It helps getting to know the men behind the wonderful books, sermons, and tracts. Hard to find, but worth the search. An important addition to any library.

My children (age 5 & 7) are enjoying this book, though it would be a fun book for older kids as well. (I, too, am learning some things as we read it together for Home school). Each page can take us 15 minutes to get through due to all of the colorful pictures and TONS of fun facts about life long ago. Every few pages there is a simple art project the kids can do related to the page. They have enjoyed those too. I expected the book to be larger than it was when it arrived, but now that we have been reading it I see it is well worth the money.

Makes Jung understandable
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1996-12-23
Ever tried reading Jung and gotten frustrated? Well, this book is for you. It takes out the complicated, esoteric language that is pervasive in Jung's style and makes it understandable for the beginner. Though the book is not very detailed, it is thorough enough as an introduction to Jungian psychology and is great as a jumping off point. This book excellent for those just interested in learning a little about Jungian psychology and as a supplement for those who need some guidance in understanding Jung's own works.
