Exciting and moving western adventure.

Bill Brooks' Law for Hire series is a delight filled with well drawn characters and settings. Pinkerton operative Teddy Blue is called for by Buffalo Bill Cody. Cody's planning another big hunting expidition, in hopes he can use the profits to fund another Wild West show.

Suspicious, superstitious, still spooked by the recent murder of Wild Bill and "Georgie" Custer being slaughtered (these things happen in threes, see) and tired Cody feels he needs protection. Plus, someone did try to shoot him.

Teddy Blue, fresh from springing a friend out of jail, takes on the assignment. It's dangerous as a mentally unstable man has decided on a whim to take out Cody, while the son of the warrior Yellow Hand escapes from his reservation school and seeks to elimnate his father's killer which he believes will help reclaim his true heritage.

Exciting, lyrical and poignant.

Review Date: 2006-06-28
The characters are Steve, a young boy who's ancestors were among the 1st white settlers in the Big Creek Montana area. Steve's father, Walter Atkins, owns a sizable family ranch where 100 years prior an Indian camp was located. Steve's neighbors, George Waters & his family, also ancestors of the original settlers and heir to a past tragedy that is still a festering wound that affects the interactions between the Indian's & white ranchers. Steve is drawn to the Indian camp ruins where he is mysteriously transported back to the past on Booger, his horse who is also the Sky Pony of Indian legends. Steve is led throughout the past by the Dream Walker. He is given a prime directive that forbids him to disclose any of the events of the future as it would change the past & alter history. He interacts with the tribe experiencing life as it was and discovers what tragically happened so long ago. Because of the tragedy he sees how both peoples, Indian & white, are infected with the hatreds and prejudices 100 years later. The Waters family is a casualty of these extreme emotions that have been as much a part of their heritage as their genes. The venom flows through their veins as much as their life sustaining blood. Steve is unsure how he will achieve a change within both cultures but is certain that he must.
The reader is able to ride with Steve and the Sky Pony through out their adventures as they capture wild horses, hunt buffalo, ride on round ups, chase cattle rustlers and most importantly learn how two cultures are different but in many ways so very alike.
This book is intended to feed the readers, age 10 to adult, sense of adventure and envelopes them in the tensions and conflicts of the characters. But most importantly to encourage self worth, pride in their heritage, give insight into other cultures and express that ALL people have value. It discourages bigotry, bullying and low self esteem.

He went by the nickname "Legs" A tall tough-minded teenager, He had done a man's work without pay untill he jumped a boxcar and fled from his home in Saskatchewan. In the following years he road the rails across the length and breadth of the continent and lived by his wits and brawn. This is a story of wanderlust in the great American "On the Road" tradition. Oscar Brooks draws on his memories of a time when young men with ambition, but little money, lived separate, allmost self-contained world. This world was inhabited by hobos, bindel stiffs, and jungle buzzards, By hoggers, Yard Bulls and gandy dancers. It was a harsh life, where steady jobs were hard to come by, especially for a kid with no family or home. Legs survived by doing any job. He husled pool, Panhandled, worked as a diswasher, labourer and farmhand. he was hels in an Ameican jail when caught crossing the border illeagally, and busted out. He made love to the wife of a traveling salesman, made war with belligerent drunks in a pool hall, and once, in a restaurant, watched as the waiter coolly shot a at with a .22 calibre pistol before serving customers. This is an exuberant account of a forgotten way of life.

John Virtue has done a splendid job in researching, writing and assembling this highly readable and beautifully conceived volume--part biography, part art book, part history. In Leonard and Reva Brooks: Artists in Exile in San Miguel de Allende, he has recorded the lives of two fascinating individuals who chose to settle in this small Mexican art community in 1947 and has shed light on the Mexican and Canadian art scene of the time. In addition, he has created a moving portrait of the expatriate community and life in this unique Mexican town. (San Miguel de Allende should award him the keys to the city.)

I was recommend this book by a photographer friend as he said it helped him, get himself organised and put some purpose back into his photographic work, after reading it myself I can only agree. These are short essays so very easy to read but very importantly they interrelated so you keep focused on what has been said previously in the the book. I certainly gave me new purpose. I hope it will do the same for others ...

The true story

This book is the true facts about how our society is today.
It describes in depth of how people are treated in this day and age and how our world is coming to an end. I would have to say that this book is the best I've read so far and I encourage others to read it; and keep track of our (changeable) times.
