Statistical Models in S (Wadsworth & Brooks/Cole Computer Science)

This is "the white book", an essential S-PLUS reference.
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-30
S programmers refer to this as "the white book", and it is a key reference for understanding the methods implemented in several of S-PLUS' high-end statistical functions, including 'lm()', predict()', 'design()', 'aov()', 'glm()', 'gam()', 'loess()', 'tree()', 'burl.tree()', 'nls()' and 'ms()'.

It's apparently out of print, but it shouldn't be.

Even with the recent arrival of S-PLUS releases that incorporate S version 4 and many of the ideas discussed in "the green book" (<>, also by John Chambers), this classic S reference is an indispensable tool for the serious statistician. It needs to be reissued--with a white cover, of course.

Here are the titles of the chapters, for reference:

1. An Appetizer

2. Statistical Models

3. Data for Models

4. Linear Models

5. Analysis of Variance: Designed Experiments

6. Generalized Linear Models

7. Generalized Additive Models

8. Local Regression Models

9. Tree-Based Models

10. Nonlinear Models

A. Classes and Methods: Object-oriented Programming in S

Simply the Best (for those who want to know what they're doing)

If you really want to know what you're doing when you use S, buy this book. Don't waste your money on a book like Venables and Ripley -- you will be sorely dissappointed, unless you just want a large collections of example calls to canned S routines. The authors of the present book, on the other hand, are Chambers and Hastie of AT&T (where S was invented), and they clearly understand the importance of detailed explanations of the theory underlying the S functions they describe. Just as important, in my opinion, they also describe the algorithms used by these functions. These two components are missing from other books (like the popular Venables and Ripley) but they are critical in order to know -- and be able to explain and justify to others -- how and why your statistical analyses were performed and what the results really mean. Any other was of doing statistics (e.g. throwing canned procedures at your data and seeing what pretty graphs and figures you can produce) is meaningless.

I found this book to be exactly what I wanted--a solid reference on process control for health care. It walked me through many key issues in statistical process control and will serve as a great reference.

This book is not for the advanced statistician by any means--but it is a good tool for use in health care by typical quality management staff.

More than expected advice regarding SPC!

I have had formal graduate education in SPC from world class leaders. But this book is a must read for anyone who performs statistical analysis for quality management, especially in the health care arena. I actually covet the Hart's advice and would declare that any reader would learn much from this reading. The tidbits of knowledge will assist the quality staff in interpretation far beyond any courses that I am aware of in the U.S. This book will make you a cut above others in your field.

I thought this was a great book! The author did a great job of spelling out examples without leaving out many steps. You shouldn't have any problem working with this book if you are a new-comer to statistics.

A GREAT BOOK!

Statistics can be a very boring subject. Most of us remember, at one time or another, taking a statistics course. One thing we all remember very well is not wanting to look at let alone read our statistics texts. Dr. Blaisdell transforms this extraordinarily dry subject into an interesting medley of mean median a la mode. Definitely recommended to any instructor trying to reduce the number of students who drop their class....

If you enjoy animals stories like "Charlotte's Web" or "Babe, the Gallant Pig" I think you'll like the Freddy books. They aren't particularly believable, but who cares? They are immensely entertaining, with a bit of light satire but no serious cynicism. And I have yet to read one that didn't have a happy ending, with the mysteries solved, the bad guys getting their come-uppance (or else reforming), and everybody living happily ever after.

I read every "Freddy" book I could get my hands on when I was a child. Now I am buying them for my grandchildren. The words "timeless and classic" do not do them justice. Every child should have the opportunity to read about Freddy and his friends!

This is a great book to have around when you run into problems with calc homework. It's nice to be able to just reach over and open this book to find a step by step solution to the problem your working on. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is using the textbook it relates to.

A Must Buy !!!!

If you want to pass your Calculus class, then buy the solution manual to the textbook. That seems like common sense but some students question whether or not they need it, or would rather pocket the extra $30. Big mistake, even if you are a math genius, which I'm not and never will be. This book not only shows you the answers to the odd problems but it goes through each step by step.

Mandatory Reference Resource for all Internship Coordinators
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-06
Sweitzer and King have written one of the most comprehensive guides to help students make the most out of their internship experiences. They cram more than enough techniques, resources and advice to help a student problem solve through one of the strangest places on earth: an office. The book is intended to be a text for students but it will more likely be used by internship coordinators who need to develop training modules or programs to prepare students for internships. The authors effectively blend relevant components of student development, career development, experiential education and human resources within a model that predicts the typical internship experience.

From my experience, it's not uncommon for my interns to recall how the book predicted the experiences they are currently going through and returning to it when they encounter problems. Compared to students who aren't familiar with the internship stages, they are better capable of managing their anxiety and taking control of their internships.

The only downside to this book is that for some reason it's intended for students who are performing field study for clinicals, however much of the book is applicable for internships in any discipline. This book is highly recommended for interns or the career services practitioner.

I used this book to help guide me through my internship for Social Work. I found it to be a great help in how I was able to see myself working professionally throughout my internship. This text let me know that experiences I went through were normal and that I was not going crazing or doing things wrong. Things that happened were normal and expected. My supervisor was very supportive during my internship with his agency even though I was having difficulties at times and I now know this is because he already knew that I would experience them. I knew from reading the text that client interaction would at times be difficult and my feelings with them could cross over personally and I had to be aware of my professionalism. I have really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is involved in an internship. I find it vital to help one understand how they are doing in their internship and how normal things are that are happening to them during there internship.

Temptation and Light

The twenty-five poems that comprise this chapbook glitter with a strange and compelling mixture of Catholic imagery and contemporary concerns. It's as if these poems were forged in some kind of hallucinatory limbo state, as they bear witness to human atrocities large and small yet still strive -- despite pain, suffering, and numbness -- for life and hope. The collection conveys a clear sense of what contemporary women are up against, from internalized pressures to be thin and perfect (often conveyed through memories of the speaker's mother) to external dangers ranging from banal domesticity to life-threatening violence. Glimmerings of faith are revealed, along with elements of an evolving life philosophy. In "The Evil Eye," for instance, the speaker, having chosen a protected spot for yoga class, observes:

"I have come here not to confess my sins / but rather because I no longer care what other / people think." I love this little book! It's got dark humor, a deep understanding of the complications and power of sex and of the various addictions and complications that accompany post traumatic stress disorders. Its finely attuned sense of loss (of family, friends, innocence) and of longing, of learning to forgive the unforgivable, is beautifully wrought. If you like Six Feet Under, you'll enjoy these poems.

Texas meets Detroit

This is a really good, deep collection, and she's truly amazing in person. The poems speak loud and clear and are beautiful and sad, too. The author is an awesome creative writing teacher at Macomb College and has the greatest Texas voice and style. Much of this comes through in her writing. Not only is her poetry great, but so are her short stories, which she's read from several times in class and on campus and throughout Metro Detroit. This poetry chapbook is a must read and she is a must see-and-hear person to believe! She's the real thing! I see her read every chance I get. Highly recommended.

This book should be on the bookshelf of every CEO and business leader. I also hear they are as good in person as they are in writing and intend to find out.

After my wife read this book, I decided to read it as well because she said the book was filled with valuable information. I can honestly say she was right. I recommend that all women who are interested in being highly successful in business and life read this terrific book. The information is valuable to BOTH men and women and I strongly recommend this purchase. The price is well worth it. As a corporate sales manager, I have purchased the books as a training aid for my entire sales force.

A friend of mine (a woman) suggested that I take a look this book. I was skeptical at first because of the title, but I found that many of the strategies detailed in the book were just as applicable for men as for women. I was especially interested in the chapters on developing key leadership skills, building effective networks and communication. The many quotes and insights/experiences from CEOs and other senior executives were helpful to put the topics of the book into perspective - great for comparing notes. I plan to share the book with both my male and female colleagues.
