Excellent Latin Course for Kids and Adults
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-07
We have used this Latin series as part of our homeschool. The teacher book is full of information, and reproduceables. My children were 3, 7 and 9 (3rd and 5th grade) when we started the series. The 3 year old even likes it. He has picked up a few words. The older children enjoyed the history as well as the fun activities. It has helped thier understanding of other languages as well as spelling. The lessons start with a comic book style conversation. Fun to read and look at. The CD (sold sepereately) reads the conversations. Each character has a different reader. The children parts have children readers. I highly recommend this course for anyone of any age.

In a world of skeptics and pessimistists, we often find there is little if any light at the end of the tunnel. But once in a while an author gives us a glimpse of hope and the impossible made possible. Russell Janney has written a book which would soften any heart of stone. I guarantee that by the end of the book, you'll either be smiling or crying, or even perhaps both. A great book for those who have fallen off the path and no longer believe that good still exists

The Miracle of the Bells

The dust jacket starts out "This is a joyous novel..." and it is, indeed! It is the story of good people finding each other, coming together and doing good things. The impact of their good works spreads outwards to affect more and more people who also have the opportunity to do good things. About 1/5th into the book, two main characters meet: Bill Dunnigan and Father Paul. From that point forward it's a roller-coaster ride with much humor and adventure.

It's a good, solid, joyous read - a delightful, old-fashioned story. I was sorry when it came to an end.

This is a beautiful child's book. So well illustrated with vintage illustrations in vivid color. Great Mission story centralized around Old Mexico, California, and Old Spain. The author's works are quite collectible.
Leo Politi (1908-1996) was a U.S. artist and author who wrote and illustrated some 20 children's books.
His works often celebrated cultural diversity, and many were published in both English and Spanish.
Leo Politi's life was the stuff that picture books are made of.
Born into an Italian family in Fresno in 1908, he was transported to Italy at the age of seven --
in an "Indian Chief suit," via transcontinental railroad and ocean liner -- and grew up, constantly drawing,
in his mother's native village near Milan.
After art school, and some designing and illustrating, he returned to the States --
via the Panama Canal, with its Latino color -- and settled on Los Angeles's quaintly Mexican Olvera Street,
where he sketched tourists and sold drawings alongside potters, weavers, and other artisans-in-residence.
Whatever the authenticity of Olvera Street, Politi's affection for the Mexican-Americans and their folkways
was genuine; an affinity. Most especially, as a devout Catholic at home with Italian saints, he responded to
Mexican ritual. Children -- natural, spontaneous children -- he loved without reserve or distinction.
Drawing Mexican children, for magazines and books, gave him an American career and a professional identity.
In 1980, a branch of the Fresno Public Library was named for him, and in 1991,
the Leo Politi Elementary School in Los Angeles was dedicated.

This book is great for fans of Saved by the Bell. It brings back an old character and solves an unresolved relationship concerning this character. This book really shows the meaning of Christmas; about giving and not getting; and about the people you love. One part in particular wit Zack and Kelly towards the end brought tears to my eyes. It's another great book that continues the story the tv show left behind. Beth Cruise has done it again!

QUANTITATIVE MODELING WITH VIGOR!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-10
What distinguishes this book from other neuronal modeling books? Firstly, it contains a solid quantitative flavor necessary for real advances in neural networks. Secondly, it places an emphasis on neuronal models not encountered in computational neuroscience. Thirdly, it is written with authority by some well known names in the field. Each chapter is self-contained and written in a didactic fashion with a future perspectives section and a problem set. The contents range from stochastic fluctuations of ionic channels to morphologically realistic neural networks. Some features include: Lanczos matrices to construct fully equivalent cables, application of Maxwell equations to derive the cable equation, and a chapter devoted to nonlinear cable theory co-authored by one of the founders of theoretical biophysics. This book is thoroughly recommended to anyone who is serious about neuronal modeling.

What a great book! I loved it, and my sons can't wait to get their hands on it as well! The characters' personalities are easy to relate to. A very entertaining read for both young and older. We are looking forward to hearing more about Modie and his adventures!

A full range of emotion is present in this extremely mature collection. A brilliant, pensive mind is behind this work.
Well worth the effort to find a copy. Other titles by this author include, "Report to a Name on a Stone" and "Night Letter."
