I have just finished "The Bells of St. Mary's and Other Ventures in Verse" by Tio Carlos. The book is a collection of verse as delightful and entertaining as any you will find. In addition, it's insightful. My personal favorite is "Vanity" on page 3. Buy the book. Read it. It will make you smile and give you some important matters to ponder. Frank P. This is a collection of Le May's early short stories when he was getting started as a writer. Le May was a cowboy before he became a writer, so the events and nomenclature are the real deal. It comes across as genuine. Le May was modest about his writing skills, but theyre pretty good.

If you like westerns with authenticity, this book is for you.

Bridget O'Brien was so human that I expected her to come over for tea! In this novel, a woman named Bridget O'Brien is a widow with two children that is compelled to marry a complete stranger and to live on Scotland Road with her middle-aged husband, Sam Bell, and his two sons, Anthony and Liam. This entire book is all about a woman's strength to survive in a harsh world and to find happiness. I thoroughly enjoyed this story because of its entertaining dialogue, rich characters, and wonderful setting.

This short and easy-to-read book (especially appropriate for 2nd thru 5th grade) provides a meaty and interesting story of Ben Franklin's experiments with electricity. Without getting too technical, the story explains things that Franklin discovered about which materials conduct electricity and which don't, the connections he made between static electricity and lightning and details of his famous experiment with a kite in a thunderstorm. Very interesting and nicely illustrated with full-color pictures throughout.

An exceptional book

It's been months since I've been this excited about a book that's scholarly in nature. Benjamin's Blind Spot is two books in one: a collection of essays by various authors who consider Benjamin's treatment of aura; and reproductions of the Manual of Lost Ideas, an odd compendium of art, text, and objects that was left on the doorstep of the Institute of Cultural Inquiry in the 50s.

The critical essays are brief and diverse, and their bibliographies offer useful suggestions for further reading. The impressive use of typography, editing and design made me think about aura as I read the book. And Arturo Ott's descriptions of the contents of the Manual are eerie and provocative. I highly recommend this book to any fan of Walter Benjamin.

I love a great detective story, and this is one. But what separates this story from most novels is the emphasis Frei places on the CRIME VICTIMS.

Four or five blonde women are found murdered in post-war Berlin. A spree-killer is on the loose. The novel centers on the German policeman (and his family) and an American policeman, stationed in the occupied city, who team up to find the killer. But, not neglected are the women who were murdered. All were "fleshed out". All the women had played a role, some large and some small, in anti-Nazi activities during the war. All were on the verge of life-changing events that were cut still by the murderer's chain.

Along with the crime story is an often-humorous story of the German policeman's 15 year old son, playing the angles to try to buy a well-cut suit that will win him the heart - and body - of a hot-to-trot girl. (The tailor's daughter). As the author's note says that author Frei was born in 1930, I wonder if this part was "his" story.

This is a very good book.

This book is extremely useful as a general guide for (1) the best places to stay and (2) the best restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. The title is misleading in that even if romance isn't the goal, the guide is useful in finding a classy place to visit. Explanations that accompany each entry are detailed and points out what's great, what's not great, prices, and everything that you'd want to jot down if you were investigating the place yourself.

Excellent in all respects. I highly recommend it.

Provoking Exploration of Biography and Philosophical Theory
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-09
Linda Bell's book divides, not so neatly, into two broad sections: a biographical exploration of her life (a coming-of-age and awareness) and the philosophical issues that have given meaning to the life she describes in honest and open reflection.

A feminist, who learned first-hand what sexism was in the halls of the academy, Bell's writing indicates that to think, to explore one's life in a disciplined fashion, can take one far from the environment in which one was raised, educated, and employed. In fact, a thoughtful consideration of the issues Bell raises are not only appropriate for those who consider themselves "philosophers", but are topics all humans should deal with in our ever more complex society.

Well done.
